Half yearly Report for February 2011-August, 2011
Project Name: KANYA
Location: Bhati Kurd Village
Report Period: February 2011- August 2011
Situation of Bhati Khurd Village:
The community in Bhati Khurd is very closed in structure. The girl children of
these communities are never allowed to go out from home. Patriarchal system
within the family and community pushed the women to stay at home under close
doors. While the girl child is born to a family it is expected that she will be
getting married very soon and will be sent to in-laws house. The girl children
within the family are not allowed to go to school also. Apart from that, families
used to organize marriage to girl children in the age between 7yrs to 13 yrs. The
Women are never allowed to go out even for recreation, movie show etc. They
never participate in the process of family decision making. The only involvement
of women within the family is in house work and reproduction of children. The
concepts to educate children and to provide economic empowerment are totally
alien to the community.

Child to Child Participation: Pottery Training for Girls:
This program aims to strengthen team building among children. It gives children an
opportunity to take lead role. The whole idea behind it is to involve the children into
leadership skill building, team cooperation and group formation so that the children
will be able to participate and mobilize themselves.
The uniqueness of this Kanya project is the pottery classes with child to child
participation program. Bhati Girls are undergoing a training of pottery classes
regularly. The children are already enrolled into the pottery classes. Earlier they
used to make the small glasses, cups, elephant etc. Now they are experienced in
making the products with design. They are now able to draw pictures and colors in
the outside of the cups. The new items they had learnt are namely flower tubs, pots
and flower vases.
There are two girls ( Priya/ Radha) they are holding the leading role in pottery.
They are taking training and assist the teacher while teacher is providing training to
the groups. These two girls are also helping the children while they are practicing it.

Story of Change:
Alka is staying at Bhati Khurd Village in Delhi. Bhati is a village
where Gujjar community resides. Gujjar community is very
conservative; patriarchy prevailed at every step within the family
of Gujjar community. Here girl child is facing ill-treatment; the girl
child is always being discriminated from school admission. The reason behind it that
community still feels the girl child is a burden for family and they are supposed to
stay at home. School going means they have to walk in the roads which are not
accepted by the male members of the family.
Alka’s family is too poor. Her father is selling milk; they have one buffalo and one
cow. She has two brothers and two sisters. Alka is studying in class- X standard
through Open School. She would like to learn vocational training also. Her joining
into the tailoring courses was pre-planned. She hailing from the conservative family
had decided to join in both education programs as well as in the tailoring also. She
was able to convince her parents that going outside does not make girls to be awful.
She is planning to earn through tailoring so that her family can enjoy economic
sustenance. She had already learnt baby underwear, baby pant and shirt, and Salwar
kameej also.
She would like to make innovative design and also like to learn fashion technology
in near future.
