POEM was an international effort devoted to studying the circulation of the Eastern
Mediterranean Sea. It was sponsored by UNESCO, IOC and CIESM, with the
participation of researchers from Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Turkey, USA
and Yugoslavia.
The multidisciplinary, multi-national co-operative POEM scientific research program
included physical, chemical and biological field observations, analysis and modelling
simulations, of the general and mesoscale circulation. The intensive field experiment
was focussing on processes studies of the formation, dispersion and spreading of the
LIW in the Levantine Basin and of the DW in the Ionian Sea.
The POEM field experiment was carried out from 1985 to 1990 (Phase 1), from 1991 to
1995 (Phase 2). The second phase that began in 1991 included also the biological and
chemical components.
