Chemistry 100 will introduce the student to the following fundamental principles of chemistry: chemistry
and measurement, atomic symbols and chemical formulas, stoichiometry, reactions in aqueous solutions,
and thermochemistry. (Roughly, the first 6 chapters of the textbook will be discussed.)
Required Materials: Chemistry The Molecular Science by Moore, Stanitski, Jurs, 2nd Edition;
OWL internet access package (available in bookstore);
Scantron Answer Sheets: Before the first exam, each student must provide 3 SCANTRON (form 882 or
882-ES) answer sheets and log in their delivery on the SCANTRON LIST. Damaged, discolored, folded,
or mutilated SCANTRON sheets will be rejected.
Notebook for notes and handouts, paper, pencils (required for exams) and pens.
(Solutions Manual and Study Guide are available but NOT required.)
NOT Required: Cell phones and beepers must be turned COMPLETELY OFF and stored out of sight. If a
student has no place to store a cell phone, a locked desk drawer in the classroom will be made available for
storage of the phone until the end of the class period.
Cell Phone Policy during Exams: The use and display of cell phones during exams are prohibited. All
cell phones must be turned OFF and stored out of sight during an exam. If a student has no place to store a
cell phone, a locked desk drawer in the testing room will be made available for storage of the phone until
the end of the exam (last person leaves). Any student who displays or uses a cell phone during an exam
will be required to sign a form documenting that they have violated the cell phone use policy. If any cell
phone technique is subsequently found to have been used to compromise the testing process, the document
signed by the student and a report by the instructor will be sent to the Division of Student Affairs as a
violation of the Louisiana Tech Honor Code.
Exams: A total of 3 exams will be given during the quarter. Each exam is worth 100 points and is
composed of 30-35 multiple choice questions.
Grades: A weighted average grade will be calculated from three exams at 26.67% each and 20% from
quizzes, homework, and in-class activities. A bonus of 5% of your online homework (OWL) score will be
added to your weighted average. OWL cannot hurt you, it can only help you!
A 10-point scale will be used to determine course letter grades as follows:
A, 90-100%,
B, 80-89.9%,
C, 70-79.9%,
D, 60-69.9%, and
F, below 60%.
Makeup Policy: Any student who misses an exam must communicate directly (either in person or by
phone/email) with the instructor within 48 hours after the absence. Direct communication means that the
student involved (not roommates, cousins, significant others, etc.) will communicate with the instructor.
Any student who misses an exam with a valid excuse will take a make-up exam over the same set of
material as soon as possible at the convenience of the instructor. Students who will miss exams for known
reasons such as sports teams, field trips, weddings, funerals, etc. should contact the instructor prior to the
exam and as soon as possible by email, phone, or in person. Arrangements for an early exam will be made
when possible. This is preferable to a makeup exam!!! “Not being ready to take the test” is not a valid
reason for missing an exam.
Students needing testing or classroom accommodations based on a disability are encouraged to discuss
those needs with the instructor as soon as possible.
Attendance: It is imperative to be in class each day and to be there punctually. You should make every
attempt to attend if you intend to perform well in this class. The classroom assignment points lost by an
absence cannot be recovered; late homework assignments will not be taken for credit. Bottom Line: Be
there! Be on time!!
OWL Homework: OWL (Online Web-based Learning) is a comprehensive, web-based, homework system
that includes the delivery and grading of electronic homework assignments. Students log into OWL
through a web browser and complete assignments selected by the instructor. When students submit a
response to an assignment question, OWL automatically grades their response and displays the correct
answer along with instructive feedback written by the instructor. Student answers and scores are stored in a
database, and grades are posted for students and instructors to see. Students may repeat assignments as
desired to try and better their grade. Please note that there are due dates for each assignment. OWL can
generate a new question set each time the student repeats an assignment. Thus students can also come back
to their assignments to study for exams.
There will be a total of three OWL assignments. An OWL assignment will be due the same day of each
exam. Students should stay current by working problems from an OWL assignment as each topic is
covered in class. NOTE: We are on CST. OWL is on EST. When an OWL assignment indicates a due
time of 9:00 a.m., this means 8:00 a.m. our time!
OWL Assignment 1 is due 2:00 pm (CST) Wednesday, September 29.
OWL Assignment 2 is due 2:00 pm (CST) Monday, October 25.
OWL Assignment 3 is due 2:00 pm (CST) Wednesday, November 17.

Academic Misconduct: In accordance with the Academic Honor Code, students pledge the following:

(0) will be given on any exam where a student has obtained information in a less than honorable manner.
