T13/D99-115R0
11.3 Recommendation to withdraw ATA with the Five Year Review
In Process.
11.4 32-Bit ATA (D98115r0) [Goodfellow]
Carried Over
11.5 Really Big LBA (D98142r2) [Rooke][Landis]
The paragraph marked General Discussion will be removed. Queuing with mixed 28 bit addresses and 64 bit addresses will
be prohibited. Various scenarios of register writes and mode switches were discussed.
11.6 AV Error Recovery Control (D99123r0)
The AV proposals (d99128r0 and D99123r1) were discussed at length. Some of the issues discussed were
 Splitting off acoustic controls from AV
 Generic AV drives instead of customer specific firmware
 Larger than 256 sector count transfers
 Interface complexity
 Lack of theoretical basis for AV architecture.
The committee requested that an interim working group be held on the video topic. Ron Roberts requested that the group
base the definition on the Mtfuji 4 VRSWG proposal. But he indicated the proposal was currently restricted by a NDA. The
Chair requested that Ron provide a summary of the VRSWG proposal at the next T13 meeting if the NDA has been lifted.
The Chair also stated that he was under the impression that the VRSWG proposal was not restricted by NDA.
11.7 Identify Column Alignment ATA/ATAPI-4 Errata Status
This is a PDF column printing error. The correction is out for NCITS letter ballot.
11.8 Expansion of the SMART Error Log (D99121R0)
This is the proposed definition of Log Address 02h.
Mark Evans moved and Hale Landis seconded that the proposal be included in the ATA/ATAPI-6 document. Passed
without objection.
11.9 Multiword DMA Timing [Landis]
Hale summarized the timing items that he thinks are no longer readily available in bus specifications and that he is
recommending be added to the ATA/ATAPI standard. Pete McLean will prepare timing diagrams for the October meeting.
11.10 Implementer’s Guide
A guide to why we did what we did in the specification. Dan Colegrove volunteered to help with this.
11.11 8bit Data Transfer for CFA
The 8 bit data ordering will be added back in to ATA/ATAPI-5. 8 Bit related Set Features will be changed from retired to
obsolete in ATA/ATAPI-5. Both of these recommendations were approved without objection since they are needed for CFA
and other hand held applications.
11.12 CFA Code Reservation
D99126r0 documents reserved codes for future CFA commands, Set Features functions and Identify drive data.
Hale Landis moved and Dan Colegrove seconded that the changes proposed in D99126r0 be incorporated in ATA/ATAPI5. Passed Unanimously.
11.13 Optional Column
Hale Landis will prepare a document designating the optional and mandatory identify device fields.
12. New Business
*Operating under the procedures of The American National Standards Institute.
NCITS Secretariat: Information Technology Industries Council (ITI)
1250 Eye Street, N.W., Suite 200, Washington, DC 20005-3922; Fax: (202) 638-4922 Tel: (202) 737-8888
5
T13/D99-115R0
12.1 BC=0 Handling (D99127r0) [Jim Hatfield]
There is a conflict between the way Byte Count is presently specified for ATAPI devices with the way a major operating
system uses ATAPI tape devices. This proposal requests a change to the Identify Packet command to add a mode indicator
so hosts can determine which way the device is configured. The configuration is controlled by a SCSI command (presently
vendor unique) transported by the Packet command.
Hale Landis moved and Tony Goodfellow seconded that D99127r0 be incorporated into ATA/ATAPI-5. The editor will
select the appropriate Identify and Set Features codes. Passed Unanimously.
12.2 REL Bit
Pete McLean will change ATA/ATAPI-5 to correct the state of REL after a data transfer in Read DMA and Write DMA and
change state diagram pointers for Read and Write DMA. Approved without objection.
12.3 PIO Mode Reporting
See 12.9.
12.4 DST End on Error
The self-test description was changed so that Self-Test may end when the test finds a test element that does not pass the test
criteria. Approved without objection.
12.5 Partition Tables
The group agreed to continue to discuss partition tables at the meetings and on the reflector. Robert Raymond agreed to
produce a paper for discussion.
12.6 Cable Detect
Curtis Stevens would like to standardize on drive side detection. Several people commented that host side detection was
superior due detection of ground having more margin than a RC voltage curve.
Pete McLean moved that we make it clear in section 6.7 of ATA/ATAPI-5 that host refers to the host determining cable
type by detecting the CBLID line grounding. A cross-reference to Annex D will also be added. Dan Colegrove seconded
the motion. The motion passed 14: 0:0.
Curtis Stevens Moved that annex D be made Normative. Tony Goodfellow seconded. The motion passed 11:2:3.
Curtis Stevens moved to strike the last sentence of the first paragraph of Annex D. Failed due to lack of second.
Curtis Stevens moved and Matt Rooke seconded that the last sentence of the first paragraph be modified to say that this
method not be used exclusively for cable detection. The motion failed 2:12:2.
12.7 Mount Fuji Action Items [Katata][ILI etc.]
The Chair reminded the committee of the Email from Katata-san with discussion of issues concerning various bits used as
flags by ATAPI. No one at this meeting was prepared to address the issues. The Chair reported that Katata-san was
attempting to attend the October meeting of T13, which require a shorter plane ride and hopefully less expense.
12.8 CS (0-1) and DA (0-2)
See 12.9
12.9 Select time and/or mixed PIO modes
The timing restrictions for mixed speed PIO modes on the same cable will be documented in ATA/ATAPI-5.
*Operating under the procedures of The American National Standards Institute.
NCITS Secretariat: Information Technology Industries Council (ITI)
1250 Eye Street, N.W., Suite 200, Washington, DC 20005-3922; Fax: (202) 638-4922 Tel: (202) 737-8888
6
T13/D99-115R0
12.10 UDMA Termination
Hale Landis posed the question: Is there a problem if both the host and the device initiate burst termination at the same
time? The committee concluded that there is no problem with the host and device terminating a burst at the same time.
12.11 AV (D99128r0) [Bulik]
See item 11.6
12.12 ATA/ATAPI-6 Project
The group discussed items that should be a part of ATA/ATAPI-6. Gene Milligan will prepare a project proposal for the
next plenary meeting.
13. Liaison Reports
13.1 T10
Published on the reflector.
13.2 SFF
No business pending that affects T13.
13.3 IDEMA
IDEMA is developing a standard on power efficiency in response to Japanese power consumption restrictions on disk
drives. A rating based upon Joules per IOPS is being evaluated. The next meeting will be at the IDEMA office in the San
Clara on November 5 at 9:30am. For more information contact Kristen Montan <kmontan@idema.org>.
14. Call for Patents
The Chair explained the patent policy. A document is available from ANSI, "Procedures for the Development and
Coordination of American National Standards", at no charge. This document is also on the WWW at
ftp//www.ncits.org/help/ansi_sdo.html. Section 1.2.11 contains the ANSI patent policy. Amy Marasco manages patent
issues for ANSI and can be contacted at amarasco@ansi.org or 212-642-4954.
The Chair then called for patents and/or patent applications that may be necessary to comply with the requirements in T13
standards, draft standards, technical reports, or draft technical reports.
Mark Evans reported that Quantum is working on a response to the call for patents. Mark reminded folks that the contact
person is Steve Wilkins 408-894-5235 for information regarding licensing.
IBM will write a letter indicating that they will offer licensing for the patent conformant to the ANSI patent policy.
.
Tony Goodfellow from GSI stated that GSI has a patent application on the construction of the 80-conductor cable. GSI will
write a letter indicating that they will offer licensing for the patent conformant to the ANSI patent policy.
Circuit Assembly Corporation and Maxtor have already provided letters covering their patents.
15. Open Issues List Summary
The list is currently empty.
16. Review of Action Items
81) Hale Landis to put together list of all things affected by saying that device 0 shall never respond for device 1.
94) Gene Milligan to prepare a project proposal for ATA/ATAPI-6.
