THE SUZUKI WAGON R+
MAKING LIFE EASIER ...
Since the launch of the unique, practical and innovative Wagon R series in 1993, followed in
1997 by the wider Wagon R+ designed specifically for Europe, over 2 million sales have
been chalked up world wide, making it one of the Japanese motor industry's greatest
success stories. Almost 30,000 Wagon R+ models have been sold in the UK alone.
The current Wagon R+, the all-new successor to the 1997 model and launched in May 2000,
has been winning over customers with its efficient use of space, comfort, style, frugal
running costs and impressive overall performance ever since. Further enhancements made
to this full five-seater in the ensuing period have made it even more of an attractive
proposition, the most recent introduced at the beginning of 2004 including new front end
styling, an advanced new 1.3 litre VVT-i engine, ABS with EBD and new interior trim.
Practicality and flexibility
With the load capacity of an estate car when the rear seats are folded, the manoeuvrability
of a compact car and the convenience of a hatchback, Wagon R+ provides an attractive
personal 'lifestyle' package with very broad consumer appeal.
The ideal all-round family vehicle for shopping, the school run and commuting, Wagon R+
will also appeal to those involved in a very wide range of leisure pursuits.
Spacious and practical ... bigger in than out
At just 11ft 4ins (3,500mm) in length and 5ft 3ins (1,620mm) in width - the Wagon R+ takes
up very little room on the road or when parked, yet it offers a spacious, easy to use interior
and the feeling of a car that is very much bigger on the inside than it is on the outside.
The compact exterior dimensions make it the perfect car for urban use where road space is
at a premium and parking spaces are becoming extremely hard to find.
With its rounded and distinctly modern 'high-cube' body design, wheels at the extremes of
each corner, five large wide opening doors and low side sills, the benefits of the Wagon R+
are immediately apparent and despite its compact dimensions it provides advanced levels of
interior flexibility, storage and driver and passenger appeal.

Key styling features include curved edges and smooth contours, large glass areas and a
distinctive, aerodynamic front end incorporating large 'faired-in', clear lens light assemblies
and a distinctive Suzuki grille.
Large door mirrors, side protective mouldings, a high-mounted rear stop lamp, wrap around
rear light units and a curved rear bumper and rear screen complete the model's neat and
attractive appearance.
The Wagon R+ has tall, wide rear doors, which open a full 67°. Together with the high
roofline, ample front and rear legroom and seats positioned at hip height it provides
particularly easy entry and exit for adults and family members alike and excellent forward
and lateral visibility for the driver and passengers.
Space efficiency
Versatility, practicality and flexibility will, for most people, be the keywords which sum up
their first impressions of the interior of the Wagon R+.
The height of the Wagon R+ provides more than adequate headroom whilst its interior width
means that there is plenty of shoulder room and good luggage capacity. Leg room, too, is
generous and all seats - which are fully upholstered in a durable, high quality fabric - are
designed to offer good lateral support. Those at the front are fully adjustable and recline into
a variety of different positions.
The separately folding rear seats can be folded flat in a single action, enabling large and
awkwardly proportioned items of luggage to be accommodated with ease providing
numerous and varied seating and loading arrangements.
With both folded there is a full 1,250 litres (VDA, measured to the roof) of available cargo
and luggage space, accommodating wide, long, tall and unusually shaped loads or
packages with ease.
The large wide rear tailgate opens upwards - so luggage and packages can be easily loaded
and accessed - whilst at the same time it is just the right height to act as a canopy offering
shelter from the elements when necessary.

Access to the luggage area – which is equipped with a ‘solid type’ hinged and removable
rear parcel shelf to protect contents from prying eyes – is also easy thanks to a low sill and
the positioning of the curved, wrap around rear light units which incorporate tail, stop, rear
fog and indicator lamps.
Reflecting the designers’ attention to detail, the interior of the Wagon R+ has many useful
storage spaces for personal and other items throughout the passenger cabin. These include
two side pockets in the luggage compartment for the stowage of small or fragile items.
Technology
Suzuki's designers have also provided the Wagon R+ with class-leading levels of built-in
technology resulting in excellent performance, reliability, economy, ride comfort, safety, and
low maintenance to deliver minimal operating costs.
The lightweight, 1.3-litre VVT-i aluminium engine provides sparkling performance, class
leading levels of power, exceptional fuel economy and low emissions, thanks to its
sophisticated variable valve timing. Maximum power is 92.5 PS [68kW] at 6,000 rpm and
fuel consumption [EU-Combined] is 44.8mpg.
The four-cylinder, in-line power unit – with 16 valves and electronically controlled multi-point
fuel injection – drives the front wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox. It is light, thanks to
the aluminium cylinder block and head, and responsive, providing – with the manual gearbox
– acceleration from 0-62mph in 12.8 seconds.
A highlight of the engine's performance is that it is installed on a hydraulic engine mounting
system and its crank bearing cap is sintered, providing for smooth, quiet running.
The catalytic converter, designed to heat up rapidly for efficient activation, is complemented
by a sophisticated electronic emission control system which includes an electronic Exhaust
Gas Recirculation system (EGR), providing clean and efficient gas flow and low exhaust
emissions, helping to ensure that the Wagon R+ is particularly environmentally friendly.

Particularly important in enhancing the appeal of this class of vehicle and unique to the
Wagon R+, an electronically controlled, 4-speed automatic gearbox – with mechanical lockup on both third and fourth gears to reduce fuel consumption and minimise noise levels – is
available as an option.
Care for the environment
Care for the environment is central to Suzuki’s philosophy and to the Wagon R+ product
concept. The car makes optimum use of all materials and provides excellent fuel
consumption and low emissions thanks to its advanced engine technology and light body.
And because the engine is all-aluminium and every plastic component over 100g in weight is
marked with its material name the eventual recycling process is made easier.
Light and precise steering
Power assisted rack and pinion steering and a 32.2 ft [9.8 m] turning circle, together with
minimal front and rear overhangs, ensure that the Wagon R+ is light and particularly easy to
drive in traffic and effortless to park in the smallest of spaces.
Surprisingly for a car in this class, the power steering system is electric – with speed
sensitivity – which means that unlike conventional systems, which tend to be unsuitable for
smaller engined cars, there is no reduction in assistance at low engine speeds.
Noise Vibration and Harshness
Measures to reduce noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) have all been optimised helping
to ensure that the interior environment is pleasant and stress-free. They include foam
sandwich construction in the A and B pillars to reduce resonance and wind noise, a special
design for the front bulkhead to reduce transmission of engine noise to the passenger
compartment, and advanced under floor sandwich construction to minimise road noise.
Overall the Wagon R+ – which comes with a comprehensive 3-year 60,000 mile warranty*, a
12-year anti-perforation warranty and 3-years roadside assistance cover – is engineered to
Suzuki’s highest standards with most sheet metal body parts made of galvanealed steel to
protect against corrosion.

Brakes and suspension
Braking is via solid discs at the front and drums, leading and trailing, at the rear. The system
includes a large 8 inch-brake booster to optimise performance and provide consistent and
reliable results. ABS and EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution are standard.
The suspension of the Wagon R+ is adapted from Suzuki’s own, well-proven design, with
rebound spring and internal shock absorbers using MacPherson struts and dampers at the
front, and a 3 link-rigid system at the rear.
Safety and security
The strong, sturdy and rigid monocoque body frame has been computer designed to help
absorb impacts at the front and rear through crumple zones which disperse the energy in
three directions and therefore achieve a high energy absorption rate.
Side impact protection beams are fitted in all four doors and the centre pillars are backed by
urethane pads that also help to absorb shock from side impacts.
The standard specification also includes an innovative Pedal Release System [PRS] for the
brake and clutch pedals on manual transmission versions, and for the brake pedal on
automatic versions. The PRS system helps to prevent injury to the legs of the driver in the
event of a frontal collision by limiting rearward movement of the pedals.
For added safety electrically operated full-sized SRS airbags for the driver and front
passenger, pre-tensioned front seat belts with force limiters, height adjustable front seat
belts and childproof rear door locks are standard. Three 3-point ELR seatbelts and three
headrests are provided in the rear.
Amongst the array of anti-theft devices providing enhanced peace of mind there is an
immobiliser system incorporated in the ignition key, flush surface and freewheeling door lock
cylinders, a deadlock system and a visible VIN.
Comprehensive equipment
The Wagon R+ offers all the comforts and practicality of many much larger vehicles and it is
particularly well specified with a high quality interior that is durable, practical and attractive.

Easy to 'read at a glance' instruments – faced in black with white needles and lit at night by a
warm amber glow – are located within an ergonomically designed panel in front of the driver.
Full size SRS driver and front passenger airbags, electric power steering, electric mirrors
and front windows, all-round central locking, a digital clock, tinted glass, colour coded
bumpers, roof rails, a radio/CD player, tachometer, 3 interior 'grab' handles,
2-speed/intermittent wipers, rear wash/wipe, 4-speed heating/ventilation system and a
heated rear window are all standard.
Lifestyle accessories
Because many Wagon R+ owners will wish to take advantage of its flexibility and the
contributions that it can make to their individual lifestyle activities, a wide range of exclusive
Suzuki designed and approved accessories is available.
The range includes alloy wheels, air conditioning, specialist roof racks and storage boxes,
fog lamps, front and rear spoilers, manual and electric sunroofs, exterior image items and
interior comfort equipment. All items are available exclusively from Suzuki Dealers.
Development Background
Suzuki developed the Wagon R+ in conjunction with General Motors / Adam Opel AG,
enabling both organisations to utilise each other’s extensive specialist knowledge and in
particular, Suzuki's widely acclaimed and much admired experience of designing and
manufacturing innovative, ‘easy to live with’ lightweight, compact vehicles.
The concept and engineering initiatives for the Wagon R+ were also utilised by Adam Opel
for the manufacture of a similar GM engined model at their plant in Poland.
Apart from the substantial benefits in product design and engineering, the co-operation
provides effective cost savings for both companies with joint purchasing and single tooling
[one set of tools for the two plant production] for parts and components contributing to a
reduction in investment and production costs.
Suzuki and GM first became affiliated in 1981 and since then they have developed a close
working relationship, particularly in Canada and South America. As a result of the success

of this relationship, in September 1998, the formation of a 'strategic alliance' for the future
was announced. This alliance includes combined efforts in global manufacturing and the
application of Suzuki's renowned experience in the design of compact vehicles and
utilisation of GM's broad automotive expertise.
Made in Hungary
The European version of the Wagon R+ is manufactured at Magyar Suzuki Corporation in
Hungary, 50 kilometres from Budapest.
The manufacturing facility was developed as a result of Suzuki's 'Global' sourcing strategy
which has embraced the establishment of other major facilities outside Japan, all producing
models for the UK, including Maruti Udyog in India (Alto), Santana in Spain (Jimny Soft Top
and Vitara) and CAMI in Canada (Grand Vitara Soft Top).
Magyar Suzuki has wide experience of producing vehicles to quality standards that are equal
to those achieved in Japan and is one of the newest car manufacturing facilities established
in Europe. It has undergone further considerable expansion and received substantial
additional capital investment to accommodate production of the Wagon R+.
The 510,000 square foot plant - built within a 91 acre site - is similar in layout to Suzuki’s
Kosai plant in Japan where all other models in the Wagon R series are produced. More than
400 staff from Magyar Suzuki have been to Japan to study Suzuki's advanced expertise in
compact vehicle technology, quality control and production techniques.
Suzuki support
The Wagon R+ GL is covered by Suzuki Shield, a 3 year / 60,000 mile new vehicle
warranty, by Suzuki Assistance, providing 24 hour roadside assistance, recovery and
associated services for 36 months and by a 12 year perforation warranty.
It is available with Suzuki Low Cost Insurance and can be purchased with the help of a
wide range of finance plans available from Suzuki Finance.
