Welcome and introductions were made.

2009-10 CI Annual Plan – Executive Summary (Handout)
Fred Stanley presented the Career Initiative Annual Plan Executive Summary for 2009-10 to the
EAG for review. Region 15, which includes Genesee and Shiawassee Counties, was awarded
$1.5 million dollars of Perkins IV and Tech Prep dollars to operate CTE programs. Perkins
dollars decreased $57,157 and Tech Prep increased $1,818 for the 2009-10 school year. The
decrease is due to enrollment decline. Tech Prep dollars fund professional development and
Perkins funding supports program improvement. Flint Community Schools and the GASC
Technology Center also receive funding for special needs (paraprofessionals and tutors).
Currently, 14 districts in Genesee County and 8 districts in Shiawassee County receive funding.
Genesee County operates 84 programs serving 7,021 students; Shiawassee County operates
23 programs serving 2,271 students. Districts receive an allocation based upon CTE student
enrollment. After review and discussion the EAG accepted the plan as presented.
3.
Field Study Evaluations (Handout)
Fred presented two flyers referencing the McLaren Hospital Field Study held on November
11, 2008, and the Kettering University Field Study held on February 27, 2009. Math and
science teachers experienced hands-on science and math applications in various
departments at Kettering. Academic teachers toured departments at McLaren to see how
topics and skills in academics are used by workers in the health care field. Many positive
comments were made from the 38+ teachers who visited the 16 departments. Podcasts
and blackboard are being used to share valuable information with teachers. Fred stated
that a measuring tool is being developed to determine student benefits from these career
integration activities.
4.
National ACTE Policy Seminar Update (Handout)
Brian Pyles reported that he attended the ACTE Policy Seminar March 9-11, 2009, in
Washington, D.C. He was able to meet with education aides at this annual event
focused on educating career and technical educators about the national issues affecting
CTE. Brian shared a handout on “The Federal Budget in Times of Madness” which was
presented at the conference by Stanley Collender, Qorvis Communications; and “Energy
Sustainability and ‘Green’ Policy Issues” presented by Bryan Howard, Manager of
Federal Advocacy, U.S. Green Building Council. Brian shared his thoughts on the
importance of educators in the economic recovery process. A seven-page Acronyms
List from the Michigan Department of Education was distributed.
5.
GASC Update (Handout)
Clyde Bell, principal, GASC Technology Center, reported that all sophomores in Genesee
County schools have received a mailing describing the programs being offered at the area
center. A tri-fold brochure designed for parents with new graduation requirements was
shared with the group as well as the 2009-10 course offering book. The course book also
lists the new academic credit by course name and credit. Clyde shared that enrollments
are down 200 from last year. Two RFPs are being completed; one from Career Alliance,
Inc., focusing on infrastructure and the other with the Genesee Regional Chamber for the
Summer Youth Initiative program.
Tom Svitkovich reiterated the important role GASC plays as an economic development
tool. The delivery system of the GASC needs to be expanded to include grades 9 and 10
to align with high school graduation requirements and the charter millage. Tom also
stated that students are taking advantage of the 600 teacher-led, on-line courses being
offered across the state. Tom suggested that the EAG have one of its meetings at the
GASC and incorporate a tour.
Much discussion occurred regarding social networking available to students and the
opportunities for it to be used as a marketing tool. On April 24 a Marketing Campaign
meeting is being held for key teachers and administrators in Genesee and Shiawassee
County, as well as Mott Community College. Contact Sherry Bradish at
sbradish@mcc.edu or 762-0420 for more information.
On June 25, the Flint Chapter of “Connect Tech” will be hosting a Social Networking
Workshop. For more information contact Jenean Kleinedler at Jenean@tedge.com or
