University of Jaen The origin of the Universidad de Jaén (Universitas Giennensis) goes back to the Modern Age, with the Universidad de Baeza, and to the 17th century during the short period in which the Estudio General de Santa Catalina (Saint Catalina College) became a Pontifical University. After the division of the University College into faculties and colleges, the Technical-Academic Commission of the University Campus of Jaén was created in May 1992. Finally, on 1st July 1993, the University College of Jaén was definitely transformed into an independent University by a law promoted and prepared by the Socialist Party and passed on the Andalusian Parliament with the support of all political parties. The UJA is a medium-sized institution(some 14500 students and over 800 faculty, most of whom are PhD’s) located on a new Campus in the north-east of the city and a few schools in other towns of the province (Andújar Linares, Úbeda). The university is ranked 1637 worldwide. The University of Jaén offers international students a wide variety of courses, exams and linguistic activities. SPANISH INTENSIVE LANGUAGE COURSE The Universidad de Jaén, through the International Relations Office, offers some intensive Spanish language course for international students from exchange programmes. These courses are free for those students, and are divided into two terms, coinciding with the University's academic calendar. They are organized and taught by university lecturers and consequently assessed and credited, so that students may choose either to just attend it in order to improve, or learn, Spanish, or include it within their learning agreements with their home universities, as part of their standard curricula. Two levels are offered: beginners and intermediate, so that one student arriving in September with no knowledge of Spanish at all may start with the beginner's course and then continue during the second term with the intermediate level course. Transfers from one level to another will be decided by lecturers. Besides, the Universidad de Jaén is an examining centre for the Cervantes Institute DELE (Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera -Spanish as Foreign Language Diploma); the Instituto Cervantes is the most prestigious institution teaching Spanish worldwide. Students interested in sitting these exams awarded by the Instituto Cervantes should say so to their Spanish course lecturers. College-level courses were added in 1865 and the first degrees were awarded in 1870. A land grant university, OSU was designated as Oregon's state-assisted agricultural college in 1868. Sea grant, space grant and sun grant designations came later, making OSU one of only two universities in the nation to hold all four titles. For more than 100 years, OSU has had a three-fold mission of teaching, research, and service to the people of Oregon and the world. There are over 200 academic degree programs offered through the university. OSU's programs in nuclear engineering, ecology, forestry, public health, biochemistry, zoology, oceanography, food science and pharmacy are recognized nationally as top tier programs.[6] In recent years, OSU's liberal arts programs have also grown significantly. The College of Liberal Arts is now one of the largest programs on campus.[7] Over 200,000 people have attended OSU since its founding.[8] The Carnegie Foundation classifies Oregon State University as a "very high research activity" university. It is ranked 56-76 at the regional level, 102-150 at the world level and 55-70 at the national level. The academic programs are divided among twelve colleges and two schools, each with a dean responsible for all faculty, staff, students, and academic programs. Colleges are divided into departments administered by a department head or chair. Each department is responsible for academic programs leading to degrees, certificates, options, or minors. Its 150-200 students per term come from around 40 different countries for small classes taught by English language teaching professionals. The ELI intensive English program curriculum consists of 18-24 hours per week of reading/writing, listening/speaking, individualized directed learning, grammar, and other elective courses (such as TOEFL preparation). Our technology-rich Learning Center adds variety to language learning, and the Conversant Program is designed to make sure that students have the opportunity to meet Oregon State University students and local residents who can help them practice their English while learning about American culture The ELI works with Oregon State University on the Conditional Admissions program. Undergraduate students with TOEFL scores of at least 450 and graduate students with scores of at least 500 can be granted conditional admission to OSU. Full admission is granted to students who achieve 550 on the TOEFL or who successfully complete Level 6 courses at the ELI. For more information about OSU admissions, including deadlines and an application form, see the OSU Admissions page. Take a look at more information about the CAP program on the ELI Admissions page. ELI students have access to all of Oregon State University's extensive Internet resources, including electronic mail and the World Wide Web. Students also are able to create their own World Wide Web home pages. ELI students can stay in campus housing or off campus in apartments, co-operative housing, or other housing. The Intensive English Program provides a focused English study experience designed to prepare you for U.S. college and university courses. While you increase your language ability, you will also gain an understanding of American culture and customs and meet people from many countries around the world. The Division of Special Programs (DSP) provides customized English language programs for groups of ten or more students. In this type of program the ELI works closely with the group sponsors (such as institutions, agencies, businesses, or foreign governments) to provide specialized English instruction in support of the students' academic or professional focus. The ELI can draw upon numerous resources, including custom-designed curricula, materials, and activities. English Language and American Culture Programs These custom-designed programs are arranged for groups to learn English while exploring the beauty of Oregon. Classroom lessons focus on cultural topics such as Downtown Corvallis, County Fairs, Health Services, and more. Students are introduced to useful vocabulary and phrases in the classroom and then given tasks to complete on field trips into the community and on excursions to scenic places in Oregon. Pre-Academic Training Programs The ELI provides courses for groups to help prepare international students for success at academic institutions in the US. Courses help students make a smooth transition into life at an US university by introducing them to campus resources, refining language skills, discussing cross-cultural issues, and preparing them for tests such as the TOEFL and GRE. Students at each level of instruction are required to take courses in Speaking & Listening; Reading; Writing; and, Grammar. Additionally, students elect to take between two and three elective courses. Elective courses include, for example, courses in American Culture, Conversation, and Computer Mediated Communication. Additionally, Advanced students may elect to take TOEFL Preparation and Practice. All courses incorporate modern technologies that assist in language learning and students have opportunities to work in a dedicated computer lab for IEP students. A student must successfully complete one level in order to advance to the next level. Advancement is accomplished by fulfilling all course requirements (e.g., attendance, active in-class participation, completion of graded homework assignments, and scores on quizzes and tests) as well as earning a sufficient score on final achievement test(s) at the end of the semester. Final scores lower than those required to advance to the next level of instruction might require a student to repeat a course level. LENGTH OF PROGRAM The IEP follows the same academic calendar as The University of Mississippi. Fall (August to December) and Spring (January to May) semesters include 15 weeks of instruction. Summer I (June) and Summer II (July) sessions each provide 4 weeks of instruction.
