1. Next year you will be studying both The Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain and The Catcher in
the Rye by JD Salinger* as a pair of set texts. These texts
will form the basis of your coursework unit for AS English
Language and Literature, and therefore it is of utmost
importance that both texts are read over the summer
period. It will be expected that you will have an
understanding and overview of both of the texts; in
class we will only be focussing on extracts.
The coursework will focus on the theme of FRIENDSHIP, so
over the holiday you will need to make sure that you have an
understanding of what this means; and as you read your set
texts you will need to find, think about, and make brief notes
on examples of this theme in the two texts. Be prepared to
talk about your findings in your first Language and Literature
lesson in September.

This course also demands that you widen your reading, and
therefore we would like you to choose two authors from the
prescribed lists below, from different sections (prose, poetry,
drama) and read one of their texts over the holiday period.
