East Hartford High School 9th Grade Health (1st Semester: Tuesday/Thursday) Mr. Martucci – Room 126 martucci.mj@easthartford.org Purpose: Welcome to 9th Grade Health! In this class, you will be exposed to a wide variety of issues concerning everyday life. Some of these issues will currently be very significant to you, while other issues may not relate to you directly at this time. At some point in your life however, you or someone you know will very likely be dealing with the topics we address, and the knowledge you learn from this class will be valuable. This course emphasizes the importance of health promotion and human growth, while focusing on demonstrating respect for yourself and others, and maturing into a well-rounded and responsible young adult. Expectations: Students will arrive to class on time and follow all school rules and dress code. Students will demonstrate appropriate personal and social behavior. Students will respect the opinions of others. Students will acquire knowledge about many different health topics and concepts through a variety of assignments. Students will be prepared to engage in learning each day by displaying effort to complete assignments in a meaningful manner. Students will communicate effectively by participating in class discussion. Students will use the Collins Writing Program to demonstrate learning. Students will use the decision-making process for critical thinking in order to solve problems related to various health topics. Students will apply their learning to develop and enhance social skills and healthy qualities for everyday life. Grading System & Assessment Breakdown: Health Class will account for 40% of your overall quarter grade. Class Work & Quizzes Projects Tests Final Exam 20% 10% 10% 20% of Final Semester Grade Grading Policy: In order to earn full credit on an in-class assignment, it must be completed by the end of the class period. If you have an excused absence on the day the in-class assignment is given, you may make it up and submit it in a timely fashion, at Mr. Martucci’s discretion. Extra copies of every notes sheet and assignment will be available in the corresponding unit folders in the classroom. In order to earn full credit on an out-of-class assignment, it must be submitted on the due date. If you have an excused absence on the due date, the assignment must be turned in the next class period you are present in order to earn full credit. If you have an unexcused absence on the due date, the assignment is considered late. LATE ASSIGNMENTS (not considering extenuating circumstances): If an assignment is turned in one class period past the due date, partial credit may be earned with a maximum grade of an 80. If an assignment is turned in two class periods past the due date, partial credit may be earned with a maximum grade of a 60. Any assignment not completed two class periods past the due date is a 0. PERSONAL MATTERS: If you feel it is necessary, please communicate with Mr. Martucci about any personal matters you are dealing with that may be affecting your performance in class. These situations will be handled privately so that accommodations can be made to establish a plan that is best for you.
