Collin Campbell 8-4 November 9, 2008 Battle Lines in Literature Part 2 PART 2: 1. Character vs. Character Captain Nemo vs. M. Aronnax M. Aronnax and Captain Nemo were at cross-purposes; M. Aronnax wanted to know the captain’s intentions to him, Conseil, and Ned Land, while Captain Nemo thought he wanted to tell him about something he had discovered. This caused a conflict between the two educated men. (pg 279) 2. Character vs. Self M. Aronnax vs. M. Aronnax M. Aronnax is trying to decide whether he should “fly” and abandon the Nautilus or stay aboard and finish his studies. This difficult decision is causing M. Aronnax internal conflict. (pg 183) 3. Character vs. Society Captain Nemo vs. Society Captain Nemo, angry at society, decides to attack a ship with the Nautilus. The penetrating power of the Nautilus’s steel spur struck the ship and caused it to sink. (pg 295-296) 4. Character vs. Nature Nautilus vs. iceberg The Nautilus, while traveling through arctic waters, was not having very easy navigation. Suddenly, a shock took place behind and the Nautilus’s course was barred southward, closing every outlet and leaving it trapped. Nature caused the iceberg to shift. (pg 255-256) 5. Character vs. Fate M. Aronnax, Conseil, and Ned Land vs. Fate The Nautilus was being pounded by eddies from the maëstrom when M. Aronnax, Conseil, and Ned Land were about to attempt to escape. Abruptly, the bolts gave way and the trio was thrown into the gulf. They woke up alive on land. This is conflict vs. fate because it was their fate to escape the Nautilus alive. (pg 303)
