Teaching Interests
Information Storage Engineering/Information Processing, Magneto-optics, Micromagnetics, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Magnetic Sensors.
Previous lecturing experience includes approximately 3000 hours lectures in Electrical
and Electronic Engineering with an additional 7000 hours seminars, tutorials and
laboratory/project work. Active in the planning and formation of proposals for the
BEng degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and the MEng degree in
Communication, Information and Electronic Engineering.
Teaching Aids
Two novel teaching aids have been developed for the visualisation and understanding
of magnetic domains. These formed the basis of a paper given at the UNESCO-SEFI
International Symposium on Innovative Methods in Technological Education.

Micromagnetics Clean Room (1987-2005)
Responsible for the origination, design and subsequent development of a complete
photolithography clean room for the fabrication and investigation of micromagnetic
and VLSI prototype devices. The clean room is equipped with major thin-film
sputtering systems, mask aligners, photoresist spinners, surface analysis and wire
bonding equipment, all installed at zero cost to the institution. High resolution device
arrays can be fabricated for a range of information storage, micromagnetics, and
robotics applications. Responsible for the refurbishment and enhancement of this
facility with the help of a HEFCE grant (£236k, jointly with the University of
Plymouth, August - October 1998) and a Royal Society/Wolfson Foundation grant
(£195k, January 2004).
Service to the South West Region and the United Kingdom
Negotiated the hosting of the 1999 U.K. - Japan High-Technology Industry Forum in
Plymouth.
February/March 1987 and June 1991. Tours of locations in California and New
England, giving presentations and visiting companies to promote Devon and Cornwall
as a location for high-tech U.S. companies wishing to invest in Europe. The
presentations centred around the technical strengths of the Polytechnic (as was) and
Departments and the potential for interaction with local industry.
Negotiated the establishment of the Centre for Advanced Manufacturing in
Electronics (AMIE) at Plymouth Polytechnic to serve industry in the South West
region (June 1987).
Several visits to companies in Japan, giving presentations on the advantages of
investment in the South West of England and the technical strengths of the University

of Plymouth to help new business ventures (on behalf of Devon and Cornwall
International). Short lecture tour to Japan and Korea sponsored by SWRDA, 2002
Joint representative for the University of Plymouth and South West of England at the
U.K. Government High Technology Marketing Initiative in the COMDEX Exhibition,
Las Vegas, November 2001, the CeBit Exhibition, Hanover, March 2002, and the
Comdex Exhibition 2002. Speaker at the UK Government stand.
Lecture tours of major companies in the U.S.A. (2001/2002) (Chicago, Boston,
Minnesota, Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas sponsored by the City of
Plymouth and the South West of England Regional Development Agency (SWRDA)
to promote the City and increase prospects for inward investment by high technology
companies into the region.
