Ryerson Elementary School 4th Annual Science Fair and Science Week CALLING ALL SCIENTISTS! Are you ready for Ryerson Science Week? April 13-17, 2015 The week of April 13 through 17 is Ryerson Science Week. Get ready for fun events and cool experiences, including our 4th Annual Science Fair! Ryerson Science Week and Science Fair are the result of a remarkable collaborative effort between the Ryerson Science Committee and the Ryerson PTO -- join us in celebrating science at Ryerson! High Touch High Tech Assemblies On Monday, April 13, we kick off Science Week with High Touch High Tech assemblies, sponsored by the Ryerson PTO. “Extreme Matter” for grades K-2: Extreme Matter: See how matter behaves at extremes of temperature and pressure using liquid nitrogen and dry ice. Get a close look at solids turning to gases and matter behaving in non-traditional ways. “Making Waves” for grades 3-4: Demonstrations highlight the properties of light and sound. See how our ears and eyes work and shape what we perceive. Become familiar with high-tech applications of light and sound. Science Fair Our big event is the . . . Ryerson 4th Annual Science Fair Tuesday, April 14, at 6:00-8:00 pm Ryerson Multipurpose Room All students who sent in their participation form by March 20 and who present a project at the Science Fair will receive a prize ribbon and a raffle ticket for a chance to win a cool prize. (For student scientists doing a science project and participating in the Science Fair, see the “Logistics Note” at the end of this handout.) Our student scientist presentations are the highlight of the Science Fair. Whether you’re sharing your project or viewing your friends’ projects, you’ll be sure to learn something amazing! New at the Science Fair this year: the Operating Room with Director of Research & Development at Metronic and parent, Michael Bettuchi! In the Operating Room, you will “operate” with hand instruments, simulate a laparoscopic procedure, and view surgical videos. For our future architects and engineers, we will have the Marshmallow Challenge. How tall can you make a tower supporting a marshmallow using only spaghetti, masking tape, and yarn? We’ll find out in the Marshmallow Challenge by measuring, recording, and comparing tower heights. Also at the Science Fair, at the Roller Coaster Physics “lab” with Cool-ology, you will learn about physics, energy, and motion in a fun and exciting way. With Spin Art Science, you’ll see how science and art intersect. THE SCIENCE FAIR IS OPEN TO EVERYONE, WHETHER YOU ARE DOING A SCIENCE PROJECT OR NOT. Bring your favorite grown-ups to come with you to the Science Fair. DON’T MISS IT! Any questions? Want to sign up your favorite grown-ups to help out? E-mail co-chairs Karin Staschke (knt714@aol.com) or Nancy Tong (tong_nancy@hotmail.com). Mystery Science Readers On Wednesday, April 15, you will be visited by a Mystery Science Reader. Your Mystery Science Reader will read you his or her favorite non-fiction or science fiction book. Who will your Mystery Science Reader be?! What will you learn?! “Stop-Think-Solve”-- Science Riddle Day You think you know your science? Do you like solving riddles? Then Thursday, April 16, Science Riddle Day, is for you! Throughout the day, Professor Ryerson will ring her atomic charm on the loudspeaker to signal: “It is riddle time!” You will stop everything, listen to the riddle shared by your teacher, and work to solve the riddle. Ryerson Recyclable Museum And our concluding, culminating and way cool event for Science Week is the Ryerson Recyclable Museum! With your class, you will create a sculpture made from recyclable materials which celebrates Earth Day (April 22) and Ryerson Science Week. You will have the opportunity to tour the pod areas to view the exhibitions created from each class. Start collecting your recyclable materials now and bring them in during the week of April 13! *** Don’t miss the 4th Annual Ryerson Science Fair! Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at 6:00 – 8:00pm LOGISTICS NOTE FOR STUDENT SCIENTISTS DOING A SCIENCE PROJECT AND PARTICIPATING IN SCIENCE FAIR The Science Fair is open to everyone, whether you have completed a science project or not. Below is information about the big day, Tuesday, April 14, 2015, at 6:00-8:00pm. 1. Posters and Experiments: Students who have completed a science project are invited to bring their posters and experiments to school on Tuesday, April 14. These students will set up their displays for the Science Fair during the school day and may have the opportunity to share their project with their fellow students. Alternatively, student scientists may bring their posters and experiments on the evening of the Science Fair starting at 5:45pm. 2. Check-in for the Science Fair: Check-in will begin at 5:45pm. Upon check-in, all attendees can pick up a Science Fair program. Students who have completed a science project and registered by the deadline will receive a certificate and ribbon. In addition, these student scientists will be automatically entered into the Science Fair raffle, the winners of which will be announced at 8:00pm. 3. Science Projects and Presentations: The highlight of the Science Fair is the science projects on view throughout the evening! Attendees will have the opportunity to view the science project displays and talk to the student scientists themselves. All student scientists are asked to stand by and talk about their projects to our Science Fair “judges” and other attendees in the Multipurpose Room at the following times: 6:00pm-6:30pm Grades Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd 6:45pm-7:15pm Grades 3rd and 4th 4. Activities: When not busy presenting their own projects or viewing each others’ projects, students will have the opportunity to check out some can’t-miss activities throughout the evening: Operating Room with Michael Bettuchi. Roller Coaster Physics lab with Cool-ology Spin Art Science. Marshmallow Challenge We look forward to seeing you all at the Science Fair! Karin Staschke Nancy Tong Co-Chairs, Science Fair 2015
