Saturday, September 1: Racing was postponed this morning due to not enough wind on the lake. The
conditions were rainy and humid all day. When the wind began to come up, racing got underway
around 10 a.m. EDT. The wind was around 4 knots out of the south-southeast. The competitors sail a
windward/leeward course with four legs (W4). The winds were a constant 5 knots from southeast.
After the 3rd A-diversion race,(1 p.m. EDT), races had to be postponed because of lightning until 1:30
p.m. EDT. Racing ended at 4:30 p.m. EDT with a total of 12 races (A and B divisions).
Sunday, September 2: Racing started at 10:30 a.m. EDT. The conditions were humid and breezy. The
wind was around 8 knots out of the east. The competitors sail a windward/leeward course with four
legs (W4). The winds were a constant 8 knots. Four races were held to complete 10 races total for the

Racing began again today on Lake Mendota at 10:00am with teams
arriving to similar condition to what were seen on Saturday. The wind
was coming out of the NNW at around 10 knots gusting up to 17. The
course was a windward/leeward with a gate for all races. We had 2
protests which were filed. One was dismissed with no penalty between
Wisconsin and Notre Dame. While the second between
2
Wisconsin and Minnesota in race 10A resulted in a Minnesota DSQ. There were no breakdowns.
The University of Wisconsin Sailing Team would like to thank Jo Reis for his contribution as PRO as
well as Aaron Mann and Anne Porter for their work as judges.

September 15-16, 2012
FJ
Saturday, September 15:
WNW breeze at 8-12 knots under a clearing sky made for some classic Rivah Chuck conditions.
Courses were 4s and 3s until the breeze veered into the N a bit more and courses needed to be stretched
to 6s and 5s. All competitors rotated through both the FJ fleet and the Firefly fleet throughout the day.
Ten races were completed in all 3 divisions. Fran Charles was the PRO with many MIT undergrads and
grad students assisting with the race management duties. Josh Leighton, Lianne Dusek, and Kerry
Sullivan assisted by judging and making Rule 42 calls on the water. The Tufts Jumbos and St Mary's
Seahawks are teaching everyone a lesson but with many more races on tap tomorrow, nothing is
assured.
Sunday, September 16:
NW breeze at 2-10 races, with a range of direction over 60 degrees. 5
Races per division were sailed before the wind direction became to
unstable. Course 4 and 3 were sailed. Thanks to Liane Dusek and
Kerry Sullivan for judging on Sunday. Thanks to MIT undergrads:
Bruno Faviero, Will Livernois, Joe Paggi, Audrey Olshefsky, David
Perez, Victoria Stivanello, Mark Van de Loo, Steve Drapcho, and Pri
Chatterjee; and help from Anthony Mazzeo and Nick Jernigan for
helping with scoring, finishes and rotations.
Congrats to the Jumbos from Tufts for sailing really well in challenging shifty conditions and winning
the 2012 Hatch Brown Trophy.

Denison JV Regatta
Denison
September 22-23, 2012
FJ
Saturday, September 22:
The 3rd annual Denison JV Regatta started promptly Saturday
morning with good breeze in the 5-10 knot range. 6A and 6B
races were completed before a strong cold front blew through
ramping the gusts up to over 30 knots. Racing ended for the day
by 3pm. No protests or breakdowns occurred, although several
capsizes held racing up a bit in the afternoon.
Sunday, September 23:
Much different conditions Sunday morning with little to no
breeze until 11AM. 1A and 1B race were completed before the time limit expired. Many thanks to all
that helped out with the regatta, including Blair Cathcart (DU '09), Jamie Jones (OSU '98), Brooke
Felts (DU '11) and Dave Aspery (OSU '14) who all filled in as PRO through the weekend. Many DU
undrads filled in admirably as rescue boat operators as well through the weekend. All in all, a great
time was had by all. Congrats to DU for their runaway victory this season!

Coast Guard
September 29-30, 2012
FJ
Saturday, September 29:
2012 marks the 70th anniversary of the Danmark Trophy and it
coincided with Homecoming at the Coast Guard Academy.
Unfortunately, the football game saw much better conditions on the
field than the Thames River provided for racing. Racing began with
light Northerly with strong ebb that continued to increase
throughout the day (3+ knots). The conditions were challenging for
sailors and race management alike. The weather mark was
voluntarily moved many times by competitors which helped keep
17
a
the mark set boat busy. Seven races were sailed in A-Division (420’s) and six were completed in BDivision. There were no protests or breakdowns.
Sunday, September 30:
Sunday brought similar conditions as yesterday with the breeze coming out of the NE. The divisions
switched fleets to start the day with race 7B started at 10:00. The ebb started shortly after racing began
and increased rapidly. Three races in A were sailed and two in B and the breeze died just before noon.
We took an early lunch break and waited patiently until 2:00 when racing was called for the day.
All courses were W-4’s with the finish line to starboard of the race committee boat. There were no
protests or breakdowns.
Congratulations to the Brown Bears who won the 2012 Danmark Trophy for the first time since 1992
