Spring/Summer 2015
Great Theatre At
The Heart Of The City
WHAT’s on // JANUARY
Hello There!
Highly recommended
10
Looking ahead we’ve a great mixed
programme of entertainment lined up, from two John Godber
comedy classics, Teechers and Bouncers, to the return of
Fascinating Aïda “back by popular demand” and a welcome
visit from the Olivier award-winning Tiger Lillies, performing their
greatest and most macabre cabaret songs. Eastival also returns
this April, offering children and families in Lincoln a vibrant festival
across the city’s cultural venues. The full programme will be
announced in the New Year, but will include innovative interactive
theatre, classic storytelling and the smash hit Singalonga Frozen!
On a more serious note, 2015 is an important year for democracy
and freedom. Not only is a General Election imminent but the
world also celebrates the 800th anniversary of the signing of
Magna Carta. To mark this occasion we’re including in our
programme a series of events that explore freedom of speech,
politics and society. From funny and heart-warming personal
expressions of sexuality in Outings, to the powerful award-winning
Confirmation, which attempts an honourable dialogue with
extremism, these events are a testament to how important the
arts are at reflecting and questioning society and holding power to
account. If we want this national conversation to continue then it
is crucial that the work of artists is valued and supported, so make
sure you tell your prospective election candidates of whatever
stripe just how important arts and culture is to you, your family and
the national story.
We hope you can join us as we share our stories this spring and
we look forward to welcoming you to the venue.

The bullet and the
bass trombone
Thursday 19 February 7.30pm
There’s an orchestra, trapped in a city during
a military coup. Violence erupts, the orchestra
becomes separated – lost – trying to find their
way home. The composer is left to tell the story.
An intricate, fractured narrative with a haunting
soundtrack comes together like a mosaic:
a whistling bird in the jungle, a gunfight at the
airport, a murder in a forest of music stands…
pieced together by a lone performer, trying to make
sense of the chaos.
“Harrowing, intelligent, beautifully crafted...
and ultimately incredibly uplifting in an
impossible-to-describe kind of way.”

The Tiger Lillies
The very worst of the tiger Lillies
Wednesday 11 March 8pm
Saturday 8 March 7.30pm
Star of Stand Up For the Week, Live at the Apollo
and Twenty Twelve, Sara Pascoe presents her first
ever UK tour show.
The Grammy nominated Godfathers of alternative cabaret are back on tour with a show celebrating
25 years of dark and deviant theatrics.
With a comedy brain that leaps from stimulating
arguments onto abstract confabulation with lumpy
doses of openness, honesty and earnestness, Sara
shares her romantic history, existential theory
and cultural insights.
With an international reputation for being the foremost avant-garde band in the world, Olivier award
winners The Tiger Lillies never cease to surprise, shock and entertain with their inimitable musical style,
conjuring up the macabre magic of pre-war Berlin and fusing it with the savage edge of punk.
The Tiger Lillies attracted mainstream recognition for composing the music and starring in the junk opera
Shockheaded Peter and recently won rave reviews with their new shows ‘The Ancient Mariner’
and ‘Lulu - A Murder Ballad’.

By Robin Soans
Directed by Max Stafford-Clark
Friday 1 May 7.30pm
I was doing something nobody had done before,
and if you’re the first to do something, you have
to be prepared to take the sh*t for it.
On the eve of one of the most important games
of his career, Welsh rugby legend Gareth Thomas
received a warning: The Sun newspaper was going
to “out” him as gay.
This is the story of two Welsh names bruised,
but not beaten, by media speculation: Gareth
Thomas, 100 caps for Wales, now the world’s most
prominent gay sportsman; and his hometown,
Bridgend, itself a victim of tabloid intrusion following
the deaths of several young residents.
24
Working with Gareth himself, and young people
in Bridgend, two of the UK’s most exciting theatre
companies – Out of Joint and National Theatre
Wales – have teamed up to tell a great story about
sport, politics, secrets, life and learning to be

This well-loved musical tells the story of Sky Masterson, a successful gambler, who is challenged to take
the uptight missionary Sarah Brown on a date to Havana. Meanwhile, small time gambler Nathan Detroit
is trying to finance the illegal floating crap game he runs without the knowledge of Adelaide, his fiancée
of fourteen years. With songs such as the eponymous Guys and Dolls, Luck Be A Lady, Sue Me and the
show-stopping Sit Down You’re Rocking The Boat, plus some fantastic dance numbers to boot, you’ll
be sure to leave the theatre with a smile on your face.
