Briscar, PIO williams@ncicu.org briscar@ncicu.org PHONE: (919) 832-5817 FAX: (919) 833-0794 BARTON COLLEGE WINS NCICU ETHICS BOWL Raleigh, NC, February 9, 2016 - Barton College won North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities’ fifth annual Ethics Bowl held February 5 and 6 on Meredith College’s campus. Methodist University earned second place in the competition. Twenty-two colleges and universities from throughout North Carolina participated in the event which focused on the theme of Ethics in Technology. Montreat College and Salem College also competed in the semi-final round. The teams made the semi-finals after having accumulated the most wins in four rounds of competition. The topic for the semifinal case was "Civil Disobedience, Free Speech, & Technological Protest against Questionable Practices." The teams responded to the question: "Is it ethical to hack & publish documents deemed by the hacker to reveal immoral, unethical or illegal activity?” The topic for the final round was "Artificial Intelligence, Military Intelligence, and Robotic Warfare." The question posed to the teams was: “Is remote-controlled warfare more ethical than conventional warfare?” The judges, who were made up of business and community leaders, praised the teams for their thoughtful arguments and broad knowledge of the topics which they demonstrated by using relevant historical facts to state their case. “The Ethics Bowl participants get stronger every year,” said Hope Williams, president of NCICU. “This is such a valuable experience for these students – not only does it increase awareness and discourse among students and business and community leaders, but the months of preparation strengthen all the students’ academic endeavors.” Barton College team members included Allison Dumas Dellinger, a senior Theatre Performance and Management major from Durham, NC, Hannah Finkelstein, a senior Middle School Education major from Washington, NJ, Joshua Seth Russ, a sophomore Mathematics and Business Administration major from Beulaville, NC, and Marcus Strath, a junior Business Administration major from Norrkoping, Sweden. The team’s coordinator was Dr. Rena Corbett, professor of Accounting in the School of Business at Barton College. (more) The Methodist University team members were, Kayla McLoughlin, a sophomore Justice/Legal Studies from Vanceboro, NC, Shaden Omar, a sophomore Biology major from Amman, Jordan, Narissa Rivera, a sophomore Chemistry major from Fayetteville, NC, and Beth Wash, a senior Social Work major from West Berlin, NJ. The team’s coordinator was Dr. J.R. Hustwit, associate professor of Philosophy and Religion and dean of the School of Arts and Humanities at Methodist University.
