The initial purpose of §504 (with reference to education), was to provide meaningful access to the public schools for students with disabilities. Some of that role is now shared with the IDEA, under which students with the most severe disabilities are now served. What remains in §504 is an anti-discrimination statute which requires that the educational needs of disabled students are met as adequately as the needs of nondisabled students. Technical assistance and training is provided to local school districts and charter schools to address issues relating to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (2004).
