The initial purpose of§504 (with referenceto education) was to provide meaningful access to the public schools forstudents with disabilities. Some ofthat roleis now shared with the IDEA, underwhich students with the most severe disabilities are nowserved. §504 is an anti-discrimination statute that addresses the educational needs of disabled students. Technical assistance and training is provided to local school districts and charterschoolsto address issues relating to Section 504ofthe Rehabilitation Act of 1973and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (2004). The planned programs and services are based on a comprehensive needs assessment resulting from advisors inthe field; feedback from assessment centers (professional growth plans); and othersources. TEC 21.054requiresthat administrators have 200 hours over a five-year period in order to retaintheir Standard Certificate. State required training is offered by Region 5 ESC and includes: • CAMPUS IMPROVEMENT PLANNING / COMPREHENSIVE NEEDS ASSESSMENT: Thisworkshop is forthose individuals who, alongwith the campus administrator, are stakeholders in the Campus Improvement Plan. Topics such as require ments for campusplans, critical components ofthe campusplan, integrated planning, and basicassumption abouteffective planning will be discussed. Participants will also receive and discuss Comprehensive Needs Assessment Tools created by Region 20 ESC. • INDUCTION/MENTORING ACADEMY (Re5PASS): This program is designed to address the SBEC induction require ments. Ithelps principals and assistant principals inthe profession by providing mentors and specific programs and services as support. The mentors will be leaderswho currently serve as principals and superintendents. The goalis to learn, develop and use key skills and behaviorswhich are considered "best practices"in leadership. • ADVANCING EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP (AEL): Foraspiring administrators, this program is a 24 hour prerequisite to the Texas TeacherEvaluation and Support System(T-TESS) and is required of alladministrators who serve as appraisers. • SITE-BASED DECISION MAKING (SBDM): This program provides leadership, staff development, technical assistance and on-site support for campus anddistrict SBDM teams for the purpose ofimplementing site-based decision making throughout the year. • SURVIVAL KIT FOR ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS: Survival Kit for Assistant Principals is designed to answer all the ques tions you've always wanted to ask, butwere afraid to. Topics to bediscussed will include pastexperiences, current issues, andpos sible problemsyou will face in the future. •TIME MANAGEMENT FOR THE CAMPUS ADMINISTRATOR: Principals face many demands ontheir time eachand every day. Principals are busy, overwhelmed and frustrated about getting things donein the allotted time. In order to become more ef ficient and maximize their time, principals need to understand Time Management" principles as they relate to their job. In this training, wewill discuss time saving strategies along with how to prioritize and plan their time. •CHAPTER 37 - DISCIPLINE UPDATE: Requires administrators complete professional development atleast every three years in thearea ofdiscipline. Administrators who oversee discipline must attend professional development training in theareaof Chapter 37. Training must include the distinction between discipline management techniques and the discretionary authority of a teacher to remove distruptive students. This training meets the requirements ofH.B. 1952. •TEXAS TEACHER EVALUATION AND SUPPORT SYSTEM (T-TESS): T-TESS isthenew teacher evaluation system that replaces the existing Professional Development and Appraisal System (PDAS) in Texas and will befully implemented in the 2016-17 School Year. This isa required training for those who will beevaluating teachers in the classroom. Astate certificate will be issued to thosewho complete and pass the training. •TEXAS PRINCIPAL EVALUATION AND SUPPORT SYSTEM (T-PESS): T-PESS isthe new state principal evalua tion system that replaces the current principal appraisal instrument used in Texas and will befully implemented in the 2016-17 School Year. SETTEN gives public school districts in a seven-county areahigh-speed access totheInternet, email service, Internet 2 and access to TETN (Statewide Telecommunications Network) through a hub located at Region 5 Education Service Center in Beaumont. The network infrastructure iscurrently expanding toinclude additional connections to other educational entities, such as community colleges, private schools and other districts outside the Region 5service area. Currently SETTEN offers students attending member districts the opportunity to take dual-credit classes, and share instructors/classes between districts. The network also offers professional development opportunities toeducators acrossthe videoconferencing system. This allows districts tocutdown ontravel and substitute costs,and also minimizes time the teacher isout of the classroom. SETTEN utilizes H.323 videoconferencing, which benefits districts by increasing T1 bandwidth when a videoconference is not in session, allow schools to connect via the Internet to partake in educational electronic fieldtrips atlower costs, and stream video across the network. Educators can benefit by taking advantage of graduate courses, curriculum training, staff development, and regular updates from TEA, Re gion 5,SETTEN and other schools. Districts also have statewide access tocooperative ventures with remote districts, access tostatewide collaborative videoconferences, and much more. Colleges benefit by enrolling students in degree plans while still enrolled in high school, and by having access to a wider audience, includ ing students, educators, and community members. Students benefit by gaining the opportunity to enroll in dual credit courses. These students obtain college credit while attending high school by participating in freshman and sophomore courses presented by local university and college professors. They also may take advantage of shared instruction courses that may otherwise not be available, and allow the expertise of other educators to be shared throughout the Region. Communities, especially rural ones, benefit from having a local educational facility that offers access to such programs asGED, college credit, adult literacy, etc. Region 5 provides access and support for Internet, filtered Email, Point-to-Point Videoconferencing and associatedequipment. Region 5and SETTEN staff are dedicated to providing member districts with consistently good service and quick response time when prob lems arise. SETTEN members also have the opportunity to purchase Internet Filtering through Region 5 at a reasonable cost. Cost of Membership: The SETTEN project is a true collaborative in that each member shares in the cost of maintaining a hub site atthe regional service center anda local distance learning classroom at their site. HOW TO MAKE YOUR SCHOOL A GREAT PLACE TO WORK This training outlines a process to accomplish the goal of making your District the best place your employees have ever worked. It begins by identifying the ideal employee, establishing the desired school culture and climate, and continuing with specific strategies for the implementation of hiring and retaining the highest quality employees. r CLI ENGAGE CLI Engage is a comprehensive professional development and child progress monitoring system for pre-k teachers in Texas public schools and Head Start programs. The system will launch in Fall 2015. Access to the online professional development resources and child progress monitoring tools is free to all pre-k teachers at Texas school districts, charter schools, and Head Start programs. Following the launch of the CLI Engage platform in public schools and Head Start programs, there will be opportunities for child care programs serving at-risk children to access these Texas School Ready! resources. MATHEMATICS INTERACTIVE JOURNALING, GRADES 3 - ALGEBRA I In this workshop, teachers will experience how to use the TEKS based Math interactive journal (foldable ®) Foldables ® and how they can be integrated into daily lessons, into station activities or used as a spiral review during the year. This tool is invaluable for teachers and students to successfully implement our more rigorous math TEKS and prepare for the Texas STAAR assessment. VGO VIDEOCONFERENCING ROBOT The Vqo Robot will allow students who will be off campus or homebound for a significant period of time due to illness to be fully active participants in their classrooms. The Vgo robot allows students and teachers simple and safe participation during classroom instruction just like students who are physically present in the class. T-TESS & T-PESS T-TESS is the new Texas Teacher Evaluation Support System and T-PESS is the new Texas Principal Evaluation Support System. These are required trainings for those that will be evaluating teachers/principals and will be fully implemented in the 2016-17 School Year. YOUTH SOLUTIONS CAREER EXPO The Youth Solutions Career Expo will present students with job readiness skills, and they will have access to an event center full of business and industry professionals. The event is based around HB5 and post-secondary options for students in our area. This professional development, based on the National training from the Bureau of Education and Research, defines what occurs during a Guided Math Session and includes many videos of real classrooms implementing it. This training helps teachers understand the difference between Guid ed Math and Math Stations.
