The first film and Hollywood
In 1895 the Lumiere brothers showed the first movie in
Paris, France. The film was 17 metres long and ran
approximately for 46 seconds.
But it was Hollywood that became the centre of the film
industry. In 1919 only 35,000 people lived there. Good
weather and a beautiful landscape attracted many film
directors there and in a short time, in 1925, the
population of Hollywood rose up to 130,000 people

Hollywood
In 1853, only one ruined house
and a shelter for livestock stood
in the place where the film
studios are built today.
Dolby Theatre
The Dolby Theatre,
formerly known as the
Kodak Theatre, is a large
auditorium hosting live
concerts and other
notable performances.
The most prestigious
Annual Award’s ceremony
– the Oscars – has taken
place here since 2002.
Studios - A Dream Factory
All Hollywood film stars have one thing
in common – they passed through a
legendary gate into a dream factory, as
this place is also called. Actually, there
were and still are many gates leading
into fabled studios. Nowadays there
are more than a dozen ones e.g.
Metro – Goldwin – Mayer, with the
logo of a roaring lion, established in
1915 as Triangle Pictures and for many
years it was the most powerful one.
Sony Pictures involves two other
studios - Columbia Pictures with
a logo of a torch-bearing goddess
and Tri Star with the winged white
horse.
All kind of movies - dramas,
comedies, thrillers and detective
stories came out of their workshop,
for example “Men in Black”, “The
da Vinci Code”, “First Knight”,
“Cliffhanger” and many others.
Sony Pictures Studio
20th Century Fox
was founded in 1913 by William Fox in the area of a private ranch. When the studio
agreed to make “Star Wars”, it seemed to be a fiasco, a film without any conception
and the studio wanted George Lukas to stop work on it. They were afraid to support
such nonsense, but later changed their minds and the film made millions of dollars.
Other successful movies were “Jurassic Park” and “Titanic” where the best Czech
stuntmen acted.
Walt Disney Studio is likely best known to children
because of numerous successful animated cartoons.
The best movie of 1960 was a musical „Mary Poppins“, mixing
live acted and animated scenes.
The greatest mistake, which the studio managers have ever
made, was when they refused Spielberg’s project for “E. T.”
Walk of Fame
Hollywood is not only work in studios and filmmaking. It is also a place where you can see
stars – either literally or metaphorically.
The Hollywood Walk of Fame is a two-kilometer
long promenade on Hollywood Boulevard with
about 2,500 five-pointed stars, comprising a
name and emblem indicating an award
category. The stars on the pavement are
dedicated to famous actors, film directors,
musicians and other people from the
entertainment industry.
