Pig Dissection Lab Spring 2010 First Day • • • • • • • • • • • • Fetal Pigs – Source, preservative Umbilical cord, placenta Demonstration of pregnant sow uterus Safety – goggles, gloves, aprons, lab coats, jewelry Feel “sick” Lab Packets – Directions with questions and Handouts (Colored pencils) Dissection process and roles Storage, “goodie bag” for organs; pan and lid Clean up – table tops, air freshener, dissection kits, aprons and lab coats Study assistance – My PV webpage study links and notes link, Google, Classroom and text charts, Text chapters, “Greasy Guy”; Color plates – pig and heart Assessment – Two quizzes; One major exam – lecture and practical Pig Jokes Pregnant Sow Uterus Fetal Pig Gender Determination • Urogenital orifice – opening for both urine and reproduction (semen in male) (birth canal and receiving the penis in female) • Male – just inferior to umbilical cord; thin, white penis just under abdominal skin opens into it; one orifice under tail = anus; scrotal sac present • Female – just inferior to anus; two orifices under tail urogenital papilla (clitoris) Male vs. Female Excretory and Reproductive Anatomy Pig Dissection • • • • • • First incision Begin just inferior of the cervical region Proceed medially and ventrally down the thoracic area. Be superficial at first Later, deepen the incision At the umbilical region, proceed around the umbilicus in a circular fashion. • Don’t complete the most posterior part of the circle. May sever the penis!! • From the mid ventral incision, at the axillary regions, proceed laterally • From the mid ventral incision, make 2 sets of lateral cuts in the upper and lower abdominal regions Pig Dissection- Initial Cuts “Hog Tying” • • • • Use two pieces of string Tie tightly to one forelimb and one leg Wrap under the pan Tie with an adjustable knot to the other forelimb and leg • Slip out from under pan at end of class • “Hog Tie” • Adjust as needed for tightness to open the body
