That’s why Binkley Real Estate, LLC is a good choice for your Real Estate needs. • You already know that there are thousands of dollars at stake. • You could get the asking price or maybe you will have to settle for the best offer on the table. • A professional real estate agency will act in your best interests. That’s why it’s essential to find a high-quality real estate agency, like Binkley Real Estate, LLC. • Reputation says a lot about a company. What do people say about their services? • Ask your family, friends and neighbors for recommendations. Their experiences will guide you toward a reputable agency. • Once you have a list of possibilities, do some research. Find out how long the agency has been in business. Ideally, you want people who know your community. Binkley Real Estate, LLC has been an Auglaize County business for over 30 years. • Remember, if a real estate agency is merely a side business for someone, it might not give you the best results. Buying and selling homes is a full time job. • Look on the Internet and read customer service reviews. They should also have an impact on your overall impression of an agency. • Once you have narrowed your list, contact some businesses and ask them questions. You should know about their listings, fees and commissions. • Choose an agency that has a sharp understanding of neighborhoods that interest you and that has solid contacts with other realty companies. • This assumes major importance when you’re selling your current house, because the agency usually handles the sale while the realtor helps you find your new one. • The marketing strategy and advertising is what makes each agency unique. It will greatly influence the sale of your home. • Although most companies might look the same, real estate agencies have a preference for the kind of properties they show or sell. These concentrations might include commercial properties or high-end homes. Try to find a business with a focus that concentrates on selling homes similar to yours. • Look at an agency’s listings to see if your home would fit in nicely with their existing clients. If you were purchasing a home, would you find their listings easy to read and informative? • The size of the agency will have an impact on your experience. Small agencies can provide more personalized service, but they may not have the networking advantages of a large company. Big agencies have more opportunities to network and sell your home, but they may have to divide their time among many clients. • Be prepared to ask an agency the following questions if you are selling your home: -- How will you advertise my home? Will you use the Internet and newspapers? -- How many pictures of my house will appear online? -- On which sites will my home be featured? -- Do you have other homes that have recently been sold in this price range? -- How long has the agency been selling homes in my neighborhood? -- What makes your agency unique? The two biggest financial decisions you will make in your lifetime are buying and selling a home. Protect your investment and peace of mind by choosing the best and most trustworthy real estate agency you can find. But your experience with acupuncture will depend largely on the acupuncture provider that you choose. You want to find an acupuncturist that best suits your needs. If you like and trust your practitioner, your encounter with acupuncture will be more positive. You will also want to know about the acupuncturists training and experience and what to expect from the acupuncture treatment. The clearer you are about who it is that is treating you and exactly what the treatment entails, the more you will be able to relax during the acupuncture session and benefit from this ancient form of health care. Determine your goals Do you have a specific injury or complaint or do you want to try acupuncture to balance body, mind and spirit? Are you looking for a primary health care practitioner, or someone to work in conjunction with your current physician? Here are some questions that you should ask when choosing an acupuncturist. 1. Where was he or she trained to practice Acupuncture? 2. How long has he or she been in practice as an acupuncturist? 3. What experience does he or she have in treating your specific ailment? 4. How much are sessions? What Qualifications to look for when Choosing an Acupuncturist Today acupuncture is an acknowledged and respected field of medicine. In most States, and countries formal training and certification is required in order to practice. Ohio has set rigorous training standards for Chiropractors to practice acupuncture. Most states require a degree from an accredited school and issue a written state board exam before becoming licensed. Traditional Chinese medicine explains acupuncture as a technique for balancing the flow of energy or life force — known as qi or chi (CHEE) — believed to flow through pathways (meridians) in your body. By inserting needles into specific points along these meridians, acupuncture practitioners believe that your energy flow will re-balance. In contrast, many Western practitioners view the acupuncture points as places to stimulate nerves, muscles and connective tissue. Some believe that this stimulation boosts your body’s natural painkillers and increases blood flow. Ask About Treatment Styles Acupuncture encompasses several distinctive styles. Korean acupuncture, for example, primarily uses points on the hand, while Japanese acupuncture calls for fewer and finer needles inserted at shallower depths. There is no evidence that one particular style is more effective than another, but you should know what you are getting into. Discuss Length of Treatment Decide in advance what your expectations are and discuss them with your acupuncturist. A chronic illness may need several months of acupuncture treatment to have a noticeable effect. Since acupuncture has few side effects, it may be worth a try. The Evening Leader & Wapakoneta Daily News WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2015 HOW-TO Guide CONSUMER CONSUMER HOW-TO FIND QUALITY NURSING CARE FOR ALZHEIMER’S PATIENTS Placing a loved one in a care center is one of the most difficult tasks a family member ever faces. But when it becomes necessary, prospective residents and their families should have the best information possible to make this decision. The Alzheimer’s Association gives great resources to help a loved one make the best decision regarding medical care for a person with Alzheimer’s disease. Follow these steps to gather valuable information about potential placement for an Alzheimer’s patient. First, determine if alternative living is appropriate. It may be hard for the person with dementia to understand their needs, which is why you, the caregiver, are the one to determine what is best for them. In determining what is best, there are certain conditions to look for in both the person with dementia as well as the caregiver. For the person with dementia, the Alzheimer’s Association suggests to ask these questions: Have they become increasingly withdrawn and isolated? Have they been experiencing steadily deteriorating health? Are they experiencing wright loss due to swallowing problems related to the progression of the disease? Is unable to feed, bathe, and or/dress themselves? Are they prone to falls? Do they require assistance with walking? Have they become bedridden? Are they wandering, confusing days and night, or unaware of their surroundings? Have you called the police to find the person, or has there been an injury related to wandering? Have they experienced episodes of “acting out” or violent behavior? And finally, are they having increasing problems with incontinence? The stress of caregiving can have a huge effect on the individual that dedicates so much of their time and effort of keeping an Alzheimer’s individual at home. But, it is just as important for the caregiver to keep up on their health too. That is why the Alzheimer’s Association also suggests that caregivers ask themselves these questions: Are you unable to socialize or take time for yourself? Are you physically able to lift or transfer the person with dementia? Are you having difficulty sleeping or getting enough rest? Are you neglecting other familial roles and friendships? Are you feeling stressed and exhausted, hopeless or helpless? Are you using alcohol or medications to cope? Are you experiencing frequent bouts of crying? Have you become ill more than once in the past six months with a serious health problem such as pneumonia? Are you becoming verbally, physically or emotionally out of control in response to a person with dementia who doesn’t listen, asks the same question excessively, and wanders? If you can answer yes to any or all of the questions posed for either the Alzheimer’s individual or the caregiver, this can be a strong indication that alternative living would be in the best interest of all concerned. Second, determine the type of alternative living that is appropriate. There is a wide variety of residential facilities available in the Mercer/ Auglaize County and surrounding areas. Some of these care centers have specialized units for those with a dementia or Alzheimer’s diagnosis. However, others may take Alzheimer’s patients even if they don’t have specialized Alzheimer’s programming. Choosing the type of alternative living may depend on what stage the individual is at in the Alzheimer’s disease process. If the individual only needs little assistance, an Assisted Living may be appropriate. Assisted Livings are designed to meet the individual needs of those requiring help with activities of daily living, but who do not need the skilled medical care provided in a nursing home. Nursing Homes, on the other hand, are designed for those who are in need of 24-hour care. Finally, know the importance of a specialized unit with Alzheimer’s or dementia programming. These Alzheimer’s units focus on memory retention, processing and concentration skills. In these designated units, they usually have primary care providers that are extensively trained to care for memory impaired patients, are specially designed for comfort and security, have individualized daily schedules and 24-hour programming, have sensory stimulation and relaxation techniques, and have family support and activities. When choosing between the different specialized units, it is important that you spend time in the units as they can vary considerably from place to place. Most initial visits are spent getting to know the facility as a whole. In order to get to know the specialized unit better, it is suggested to speak with the coordinator of the Alzheimer’s program, if there is one, and to spend time observing the staff and resident interactions in the Alzheimer’s unit. When there, the Alzheimer’s Association recommends asking these questions: What kind of activities do you have for people with memory loss? How many hours a day do you have planned activities? (The better programs have structured activities throughout the day, at least 5 days a week.) What makes your dementia unit specialized? What precautions do you have for those who wander? Is it possible for someone to walk out? Does your staff have special training for dealing with difficult behaviors? If you can answer yes to these questions, then the care center is probably making a difference. Another suggestion would be to speak with the family members of a patient who is in the facility or specialized unit. They can provide direct insight into the workings of the care center. 5 HOW-TO Guide CONSUMER 6 The Evening Leader & Wapakoneta Daily News WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2015 CONSUMER HOW-TO CHOOSE A FLORIST At Moon Florist, they believe that flowers brighten up any day or event. Whether it’s a wedding, funeral, corporate dinner, a simple “just because,” or a holiday, the right flowers will help set the tone. Research the Florist. If you’re having an event a special venue, talk to the staff there to see if they have any recommendations on who they like to work with. Often, if they like several local florists, they rotate between them. Another great place to get suggestions is from friends and family. Ask them what florists they’ve used, and what they liked about the florists. People often tell Moon Florist that they like their creative arrangements and their large selection of unique gifts. If you have a large event, some find it helpful to narrow your list down to two or three florists who appeal to you. Then start interviewing them. If you have a smaller occasion, a visit to the store is the best place to start. A great way to work with a florist is to find suggestions in magazines. Make notes about why you like certain arrangements. Tell the florist your estimated budget so they can prepare before you actually meet with them. When you enter the shop, you should be very observant. By watching the cleanliness, organization and friendliness of the store, you’ll get a good impression of how the florist will act when working with you on a personal basis. All of the flowers in the store should be well-watered and attractively arranged, and there should be a large variety. An experienced florist, like Moon Florist, will be able to give you numerous suggestions as to what types of flowers to use. The flowers should be those that are locally in season for your event. Have the florist show you pictures of arrangements they have made in the past. Each florist has their own personal flair. Moon Florist is owned by three sisters with a dream to make a difference. Darlene, Deb, and Jenny, daughters of Lester and Helen Shenk and the late Pauline Shenk pride themselves on not just offering a product, but actual service with each item they sell. From fresh to silk flowers... they have a talented team of designers and sales staff committed to making your experience a good one. And, custom orders are always welcome at Moon Florist! If you brought pictures of arrangements that you have seen, such as from Pinterest, be sure to show the florist. Discuss the arrangements, and the aspects that you like. See if the florist thinks they can create similar arrangements. If you have a custom piece you want done, or measurements, bring those in as well. The creative team at Moon Florist enjoys working with customized pieces. Once you have determined the florist you want to work with, it is important to nail down the specifics. You should know exactly what type of arrangements the florist may make, even though you may not know exactly the flowers that will be used. You should also know when payment for the flowers is expected. If there is a contract, be sure you understand all the specifics on the contract before you sign anything. Trust the florist to deliver the flowers as promised. Moon Florist delivers to all local funeral homes, hospitals, and nursing homes, as well as homes and businesses in a respectable radius. They can even help you send your flowers out of town, out of the state, or around the world! Using flowers to decorate enhances any event. But it doesn’t have to be a special event or occasion. It can just be a bouquet or planter to brighten someone’s day.. even your own! Make sure to rely on a professional florist to perform this valuable service. The wonderful, seasonable colors and beautiful aroma will add to everyone’s enjoyment. HOW-TO Guide CONSUMER The Evening Leader & Wapakoneta Daily News WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2015 7 CONSUMER HOW-TO CHOOSE A PHARMACY Why Choose a Local Pharmacy These days, shoppers can pick up over-the-counter medicine and prescriptions from any big chain retailer. The convenience of picking up your medicine while shopping for groceries or clothing is appealing to most people. However, people shouldn’t be so quick to neglect using a local pharmacy. There are several reasons why an individual should choose to shop at an independent community pharmacy versus a big chain retailer’s pharmacy. Buying locally from an independent pharmacy supports the local economy. When customers buy from an independent pharmacy, jobs are created for pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and other staff. Also, a large percentage of the money spent stays in the community as to going to a large chain’s headquarters located in another state. When you shop at a local pharmacy, you will find friendly staff who probably know you and your family. In fact, it’s not uncommon for customers to develop personal relationships with the staff. The value is placed on you and not your money. You are far more likely to develop a personal relationship with the staff at your local independent pharmacy. A personal relationship ensures great service. Schwieterman Pharmacies have been serving the area for nearly a century, and will be celebrating 100 Years in business in 2016. You will find a local Schwieterman Pharmacy in several communities; New Bremen 419-629-2336, Minster 419-6282305, St. Marys 419-394-3219, Wapakoneta 419-738-5959, Coldwater 419-6783435 and coming soon to Celina in 2016! Local pharmacies have shorter wait times. Big chain retailers seem to attract big crowds, which in turn, mean long lines. However, local independent pharmacies will work to have you out in a short time. They realize that you have other things to do besides wait for your medicine. You can choose from a variety of over-the-counter products. Despite being major chain retailers, their pharmacy departments don’t always carry that special over-the-counter product you are looking for. Truthfully, you might discover that they carry a limited selection. When you shop at an independent local pharmacy, you’ll likely find a product that helped your mother in her younger years whenever she was sick – now available to heal you as well. A local pharmacy offers customers more services. A local independent pharmacy will usually offer it’s customers a variety of services. Some of the services you can find at your local Schwieterman Pharmacies are Health Screenings, Hormone Replacement Therapy, Medication Synchronization, Nursing Home Services, Prescription Compounding, RX Refills, Vaccinations and a host of other services. The owner resides in your state and not at another location. Chain retailers are headed by corporations in big offices in big cities. Of course, they never meet the people who make their businesses a success. This differs with an independent pharmacy. The owner lives in the same state and likely interacts with the people who make his business successful; particularly since he probably still works there. Furthermore, his business is likely to be family owned. As you can see, a local independent pharmacy, like Schwieterman Pharmacies has a lot of advantages over large retail chains, one of which is viewing its customers as “people they love to serve.” Thus, this is why it’s better to choose an independent pharmacy for your pharmaceutical needs versus the major retail chains. HOW-TO Guide CONSUMER 8 CONSUMER HOW-TO The Evening Leader & Wapakoneta Daily News WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2015 CHOOSE A NURSING HOME FACILITY A nursing home is not the facility that we remember from years past so the first thing you must decide is why does a loved one need the nursing home facility. A nursing home can be a short term rehab center or a short term respite stay. It could also serve as a hospice respite, long term care placement or a provider for your outpatient therapy. First and foremost, you must figure out what services you are looking for from the nursing home. Remember that not all nursing homes are the same. Many of them offer the same services, but each facility has their own strengths and weaknesses and their own culture and community. The best way to determine if you or your loved ones’ needs can be met is by visiting the facility, talking with current residents and families and talking with your primary care physician or healthcare community. Visiting the Facility: If you are interested in a facility, stop in at the facility unannounced. Just drop in and walk around. See how the staff treats the residents and you as a visitor. Pay attention to the current residents. Are they well groomed? Do they seem happy? Are there activities going on? Is there enough staff ? Does the facility have plenty of natural light and pleasing décor? Is the facility clean? Is it free of odors? If this facility meets your expectations, proceed with a structured tour and consultation with the admissions director. Tour and Consultation: Schedule a formal tour and consultation with the admissions director. If the prospective resident is able to join you for the tour, it could be beneficial. Please remember that a nursing home could be their long term home. Each resident has their own personal preferences and they should be included with the selection process. If the potential resident is not able to come in to the facility, at the very least make a list of the things that are most important to your loved one. Each facility will offer the basic services, but you need to find a facility that caters to your loved one’s overall preferences. When you meet with the admissions director, be sure to bring the list of preferences and any questions or concerns that you or your loved one might have. Some questions you might want to ask: Does your facility accept my loved ones’ insurance (especially if it will be for a short term rehab stay)? Does your facility provide in-house therapy and if so what types of therapy are offered? Will my loved one get a private room? Can my loved one stay in the same room if they choose to stay long term? What types of activities are provided throughout the day? Does the facility provide transportation? Is there a secured Alzheimer’s unit? Does a beautician come to the facility? Who is the medical director? Which physicians attend at your facility? Each potential resident has specific requirements so be sure to find a facility that can meet all or most of their wants and needs. Talk with current residents/family members: Another great way to learn more about the prospective facility is by asking others. Talk with the current residents and ask them how they like the facility. If there are family members at the facility, ask them. Or ask the admissions director to provide you with a list of a current or past residents that would be willing to talk with prospective residents. Word of mouth is a very powerful testimonial. Who better to ask than the people that currently live at the facility? No facility will be perfect but remember that you are looking for the best fit for your loved one. Ask your doctor. The healthcare community is a small community within itself, so ask your primary care physician their opinion about the facility. If the physician does not know, ask their staff. Many times they are a great resource as well. Or if you know someone at the local hospital or local home health agency, ask them. Ultimately, the decision is you or your loved ones to make, but their input may help to ease any anxiety and direct you in the right way. Deciding to place your loved one in a nursing facility can be difficult but carefully weighing the options and doing the research will hopefully help make the decision a little easier. HOW-TO Guide CONSUMER The Evening Leader & Wapakoneta Daily News WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2015 CONSUMER HOW-TO Coin collecting, or numismatics, is one of the most popular hobbies world-wide. People collect coins for various reasons. Some collect them for their monetary value, as a way to trade and make a profit. Others collect them because they appreciate the beauty of their coins and enjoy looking at them. Collecting coins can be a fascinating hobby. A coin’s design is often influenced by history, events and famous people. It is an excellent way to learn about governments and countries. It can also be a great investment if you purchase coins that increase in value. But it is not a simple hobby because of all the factors that impact the value of each individual coin, from its history to its quality and its scarcity. If you are considering starting a coin collection, here are some things to keep in mind. Know What You Have Knowledge is key for coin collectors. There is a saying in numismatics, “Buy the book before you buy the coin!” Thankfully, there are a lot of resources that can help you understand what you are interested in collecting, buying or selling. It is important to discover everything you can about a coin before purchasing it. If you have inherited coins, or have received them as gifts, educate yourself on their background and value. Most coin shops will have books that can help you get started. You can also find information at the local library and on the Internet. 9 BUY, SELL AND COLLECT COINS Once you have completed your research, you can start buying and selling with greater confidence. Understand Coin Grading Knowing how to grade coins is essential if you plan to collect coins on a long term basis. The current system assigns a numerical value based on the coin’s condition. The grading process is pivotal in determining value. You could have the same two coins -- same year, same mint, same design -and they could be worth drastically different prices based on their condition as expressed numerically when graded. Coins in near-perfect condition are very rare and are more valuable than circulated or damaged coins. Altered coins are not uncommon and may be worth very little when compared to an original coin. Don’t Clean Coins Never clean your coin collection! Novices are often tempted to give their coins a polish. Shiny coins must be worth more, right? Cleaning or polishing a coin can easily reduce or destroy its value. It removes some of the original finish, rendering the coin far less valuable as a result. Knowledgeable collectors prize coins that are in their original, pristine condition. Ask Questions Ask questions, no matter how trivial you think they might be. It is the only way you will learn and grow as a collector. Look for more experienced collectors in your area. You can find them at coin shows and shops. There may even be coin clubs in your community. Learn about their successes and failures. It will help you avoid common pitfalls. It can be hard to know which dealers have a good reputation as honest and fair, both online and locally. That’s why networking in your area and finding people with great reputations is a better way to get your questions answered. You may even wish to join one of the largest collector organizations in the United States, The American Numismatic Association. This can be a very valuable resource! You can find their Web site at: www.money.org. Visit Your Local Coin Shop Develop a relationship with your favorite coin shop or coin dealer. Many dealers also started out as collectors and likely have an appreciation of new collectors. Spending time at a coin shop can be a fun way to spend a few hours. It will also help build both your understanding and your collection. Once a dealer knows your interests, he can contact you with information about the coins you are seeking. Networking may also help you develop new friendships that stem from common interests. Doing these things will help you avoid wasting time and money on bad purchases. It will also help you accumulate more knowledge. Soon you will be on your way toward becoming a seasoned collector. But once you become comfortable as a collector, don’t keep the knowledge to yourself. Give back to the coin collecting community. Help others develop in interest in the hobby as well. 121 W. When your heating or air conditioning system fails, it can be a nightmare. Whether it is a cold winter day or sweltering hot outside, the HVAC system in your home is important to your comfort and safety. Most people cannot tolerate extreme temperatures. The elderly and people with chronic health problems need to have the temperature stabilized in their homes. The best HVAC contractors are helpful and reliable, but a poor contractor can cost you extra money and heartache. Ask people in your social network whom they might recommend. Good word of mouth will go a long way toward helping you find the best professionals in your area. After creating a list of candidates, call the Better Business Bureau, your state’s board of contractors or the builders’ association to check on their reputations. Your town’s building inspection office may also have information for you. Avoid companies who have many complaints on their record. Upon narrowing the list, call the remaining ones and ask about pricing, guarantees and warranties. Also inquire about how long it would take to complete a job and the manufacturers’ brands they use. If you are purchasing new equipment, find out if you need a separate service contractor or if routine maintenance and repairs are included in the price of installation. Does the company provide around-the-clock emergency service? High quality HVAC companies are fully licensed, bonded and insured. If a worker is injured or causes damage to your property, that insurance should cover it. Otherwise, you could be liable for the damages. Your insurance premiums would likely increase as a result. Reputable HVAC companies will usually belong to recognized professional and trade organizations. Some well-known organizations include the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute, and the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers. Membership in one of these organizations is not automatic. Applicants are required to have certain certifications, meet professional standards and meet or exceed other requirements before they are admitted. Before any work begins, verify that all the required building permits are in place. Most companies will file permits on your behalf at the local building codes office. But don’t assume that it has happened. Check with the permitting office first. Work done without proper permits could result in a fine and time delay. Have a load calculation done before installing a new system in any building. The best companies perform a thorough calculation rather than estimate. Buildings change over time due to foundations cracking or settling. It will affect the efficiency of any equipment. The HVAC company shouldn’t use the old unit to determine the proper size of a new one. If your old unit was inadequate, you will want to install a unit that is a different size. Speak with your HVAC installer to determine the right size and model for you. Ask your HVAC contractor to perform annual checkups to verify that the unit is running at peak efficiency. With these tips, you can choose a reliable HVAC business that will help you for years to come. We Are Here For All Your Heating, Cooling & Plumbing Needs! PLUMBING, HEATING & A/C Inc. ST. Having a good relationship with a high-quality auto repair shop will save you time and hassle when your vehicle needs an immediate repair. It doesn’t matter whether the car is new or used. At some point, it will need tires, oil changes or even a new engine. If you have a good auto repair shop you trust, it will make these nuances that much easier to accomplish. If you don’t have a regular mechanic, take your car in for a regular tuneup and maintenance. Since your car needs preventive maintenance anyway, take it to get an oil change or to service the air conditioning. This is a great way to try out a shop to see if they meet your needs. Here are some other things to keep in mind when looking for an auto repair shop: • Most people choose an auto repair shop based on a referral from friends, family or coworkers. Less than 40 percent of new customers are walk-ins. • The Better Business Bureau can inform you about the repair shop’s performance and reliability. • People who travel often usually work with shops that offer a national warranty. For instance, a warranty of 12,000 miles or 12 months is handy for issues that keep cropping up, particularly in older cars. • Ask about the shop’s range of services. They will need the latest technology to diagnose problems with newer cars. For example, can your prospective shop handle brake systems, electrical components and warranty repairs? Do they provide a loaner, rental car, or shuttle service while your car is being repaired? • Inquire about their customer satisfaction policy. Look around the shop. Is the equipment in good condition? Is it clean, well-lit and organized? These factors all contribute to a level of professionalism. • Look for brand names and proper certification. Does the auto repair shop use brand-name parts? These parts are engineered to meet the manufacturer’s specifications and will likely come with a warranty. Shop shops may use remade or generic brands which your insurance policy may not cover, so be sure to check. • Are the auto technicians certified by a specific car manufacturer, the National Institute for Automotive Services or Automotive Science Excellence? Is the shop approved by the American Automobile Association? If so, this indicates a customer approval rating of 90 percent or higher and the ability to adequately perform the services advertised. • Compare the services and fees of each shop in the area to find out the average price ranges. Don’t pick a shop based on cost; poor repair work will mean higher costs in the long run. Once you have found a shop you trust, establish a good working relationship with your mechanic. When you have great communication, getting repair work completed will be less painful. HOW-TO Guide CONSUMER 12 CONSUMER HOW-TO The Evening Leader & Wapakoneta Daily News WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2015 CHOOSE A FURNITURE STORE Furniture gives your house a personality. It creates an ambiance that sends a message to guests about who you are. What is your particular and unique style? What do you value most in furniture? Whether your budget is big or small, choosing new seating, tables and accessories can make a big difference in your daily life. OPTIONS Look for a store that offers something for every budget. Some budgets or lifestyles demand a low price and realize that the product will be changed often; for example, a family with a new college student. Others prefer furniture as an investment -- sofas, dining tables, beds and the like -- need to be purchased for the long term. Solid construction isn’t always apparent at first glance. Find out as much information as possible about the frame, materials, and fabric options. Being able to custom order to fit your décor is always a great highlight to consider. A well-trained staff can inform you about their furniture, how they’re built and why the construction matters. The best stores have employees who act as guides and teachers, not pushy salespeople. VALUE, NOT JUST PRICE The bigger the investment, the more important the design and build quality become. Concentrate on finding the best value. The most expensive love seat may not be a wise investment if the frame is not built solidly. It’s best to look for brands with a long track record and good reputation. When choosing the right store, don’t be afraid to shop multiple stores. But be cautious…With many ‘look alike’ products in today’s furniture industry, make sure you have all numbers and manufacturers involved when comparing prices. A more reputable store will give you their best price forward. If a store matches a lower priced quote, it might tell you something about their pricing. SERVICE, DELIVERY Every store has a different customer service policy. Choose a store that is well known for being loyal to its customers. If shopping at a store for the ‘Best Sale of the Season’, make sure you know what the % off is actually off of. Keep in mind that what really matters is the bottom line price. Inquire about return policies. Some furniture stores will allow you to exchange an item within a certain time limit if it doesn’t meet your expectations. Learn what fees are involved if you have to return an item -- if that is allowed at all. As well, ask about the store’s delivery policy, including how much it costs, how far they’ll deliver and how quickly your furniture will arrive. If you are comparison shopping, factor the delivery cost when considering different stores. A low-priced couch will not save you money if it comes with an expensive delivery fee. It may be worth it to pay a little more for the couch if free or reduced cost delivery is available. INTERNET SHOPPING The internet and social media are great tools to research your next furniture purchase, but not to purchase. If a store displays product on their site, remember that there are many look a-like styles in the industry. Two items that look the same may be totally different qualities. It is not recommended to purchase directly from the site without testing the product out for comfort or color. The colors may vary depending on your device settings. The bottom line is that there are only two things that matter: the value of options the store gives you, and the level of service you receive. Once you discover them both, furniture shopping can be a fun experience that that will beautify your home. Making funeral arrangements can be hard. Dealing with the death of a loved one is a challenge. That’s why it is better to think ahead so you can have a clear mind while making these difficult decisions. Most people don’t have much experience with planning funerals. When the time comes to visit a funeral home, they find prices vary dramatically. Indeed, funerals can be costly. Planning before your time of grief will help you make wise decisions under difficult circumstances. Here are some things to consider when you must select a funeral home. The first step is to find out if the deceased has made any funeral arrangements and whether these plans need to be changed. Sometimes weather may be an issue or other factors may get in the way of what has already been planned. If no arrangements were made, ask family and friends to see if the deceased made any specific wishes. If possible, respect those wishes. If pre-arrangements with a local company exist, then contact that company. Arrangements bought years ago may not cover the cost of the funeral or represent the latest wishes of the deceased. If you are in this situation, look around to see if another funeral home has a better arrangement, or make adjustments as necessary. To find the right funeral home, ask family, friends and pastors for a recommendation. It is a good way to focus on funeral homes with excellent reputations. You might also consider your own experiences at funeral homes in your city. If you cannot get referrals, look on the Internet. Select three or four funeral homes that might fit your needs. Visit each one with a close friend or relative. Budget is a major concern for most people. Inquire about basic fees. Ask about services the funeral home may offer and if payment arrangements can be made. Ask questions and take notes. Staff members should be patient with you. It is important to get written estimates for everything. Ask about hours for viewing, in-house versus off-site services, cremation services, additional fees and special requests. The Federal Trade Commission mandates that funeral homes must provide customers with a price list. If you believe the casket prices are too high at one funeral home, you can purchase the casket elsewhere without being subjected to additional charges. Do not decide on a funeral home right away. Think about it for a bit. The decision should be made with clarity. After deciding on a funeral home and type of service, documentation is the next step. The funeral director can help you with the required forms and permits. You should have a copy of the death certificates and make the actual burial or cremation arrangements. When other relatives or friends are involved, it is best to find a funeral home that fits your family’s needs. Talk with them honestly and compare notes. Don’t allow yourself to be pressured into additional services you don’t need or can’t afford. Stay within your budget. Talk to the funeral home and tell them who in the deceased’s family is authorized to make decisions. Be very detailed about your expectations and what kind of arrangements you want. Tell them if something is not being done according to your intentions. Good funeral homes will guide you through the process to ensure that the funeral runs smoothly for everyone. In your time of grief and hardship, preplanning can give you a small measure of comfort and peace. Choosing the right college or university can feel overwhelming. After all, your decision will have long-term ramifications. Selecting a strong college with an excellent reputation will give you a firm foundation to pursue your dream life. Careful planning and thought will help you feel confident that you are making the right choices for your life. Large or Small School? Ask yourself if you learn better in an intimate setting or a large classroom. Some schools have a small student-to-teacher ratio while others have auditoriums filled with students listening to a lecture. As you begin your research, be sure to look for information on class sizes and student population. Areas of Specialty The reputation of a university or college is very important. It can open or close doors in your career. Most colleges are renowned for a handful of majors. Does the learning institution specialize in your area of interest? Attending a prestigious university or college will give you opportunities and resources. The possibility of employment after graduation also dramatically improves when your school has good name recognition. Minors Once you have decided upon a major, think about your other areas of interest. Many colleges offer students the choice of adding a double major or minor to their plan of study. Even if you are going to pursue only one major, you will likely need to have elective courses in your schedule. These classes allow you to study something that will be beneficial and meaningful. They can also add a dimension to your work and perhaps even give you another hobby. You might even enjoy your electives so much that you decide to switch majors. Before applying to a college, view a list of possible electives. Alumni Connections Don’t forget to think of alumni connections in your family or circle of friends. A letter of recommendation or contact with others in your prospective field of study can advance your career. Colleges look kindly upon people with alumni connections. These professionals could also give you insight into avoiding pitfalls and how to best use your degree after graduation. Social Activities Extracurricular activities and social events are another element to consider when choosing a college. Connections you make outside of the classroom are very important. Some universities are famous for their sororities and fraternities. Others colleges have excellent sports programs. Any school activities can help you network and make new friends. Students even develop lifelong friendships this way. The culture of your prospective university should be a strong factor in your decision. Online Classes When you have outside commitments or you prefer to learn at home, consider taking online courses. Internet classes can save you money, especially when it comes to transportation. Online courses may allow you to work at a faster pace than traditional university classes. Working at your own speed can assist you in graduating quickly or tend to your active life. If you are thinking about choosing an online school, be sure to check their academic credentials and reputation. Also pick an institution in good standing. Choosing an institution for higher education can seem like a difficult, daunting decision. But once you understand your academic and lifestyle needs, you can find a school that is perfect for you. HOW-TO Guide CONSUMER The Evening Leader & Wapakoneta Daily News WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2015 19 CONSUMER HOW-TO CHOOSE A GOLF CART Golf carts save time on the golf course, allow disabled golfers to still enjoy their favorite sport, and help keep games moving during the busy golf season. Additionally, many people use golf carts as modes of transportation or utility vehicles off the course. Buyers in the market for a golf cart should learn about different types of golf carts, such as gas versus electric carts, and their features, such as safety functions. Buyers should also know what to look for when purchasing a new or used golf cart, including any local laws governing their use. Golf Cart Overview Golf carts were created to transport golfers and their clubs from hole to hole. Today, most golf carts are still used for this purpose, but many people use golf carts for other reasons. People use golf carts for short-range transportation, gardening, security, event venues, and farming just to name a few. Some police forces even use golf carts to travel short distances. There are two primary types of golf carts: electric and gas powered. Electric golf carts are popular on golf courses, but there are still many gas powered carts used on the green as well. Gas powered carts are more prevalently used for transportation or other non-golf related activity. Just like cars, carts can be purchased new or used depending on a buyer’s needs and budget. Gas Versus Electric Golf Carts One of the first major decisions when selecting a golf cart is deciding between gas or electric powered carts. Both types of carts have advantages and disadvantages. Generally, electric carts are less expensive to purchase than gas. The operating costs of electric carts are lower as well. Prices for both carts will vary based many factors, such as makes, models, and features. The following chart describes each type of golf cart and the advantages and disadvantages of each. New Versus Used Golf Carts Like purchasing a car, buyers have the option to buy new or used golf carts. A new cart often comes with a warranty and ensures buyers that all parts are unused and in good working condition. Used carts have much cheaper purchase prices but always run the risk of containing faulty or worn parts. Prices for new golf carts start at around $5,000. After five years of consistent use, that same golf cart could be sold for as little as $2,500. The table below compares various features of new and used golf carts. Inspect the Golf Cart Buyers should physically inspect all aspects of the cart. Make sure the tires are not worn and still possess deep treads. Shake the canopy and make sure it feels supported and stable. Do a visual inspection of the body. Check to make sure there are no major dents, rust, or other visible flaws or damages. It is normal for a used cart to have some scratches and dings but nothing that should compromise the integrity of the structure. Take the golf cart for a test drive to ensure quality performance. A quality test drive should last around thirty minutes. While driving, be sure to test the brakes, especially if the cart will be driven in areas where people will be walking like busy sidewalks. Make sure the brakes are responsive, and see how they react when forced to stop short. Feel how the cart handles and steers. Take the cart on hills and other road conditions that it will encounter regularly. For electric carts, keep an eye on the battery life to see how it lasts during the test drive.
