But it’s much more than that for one local marathon runner, Jovan Abernathy founder of Houston’s newest social and tourism running community, I HOPE I COME BACK ALIVE (ihopeicombackalive.com) Abernathy has worked in the Houston restaurant industry for nearly 20 years. She started her company while overcoming her own personal challenges with weight gain, depression and unhealthy habits that come along with plenty of cash and late nights waiting tables. She decided that her life needed a new adventure. In 2008 Abernathy began training and preparing for the Chevron Houston Marathon in which she finished with an impressive time. Soon, Abernathy became a traveling runner.. “I learned that I really loved adventure. Since then, I have run 3 full marathons, 6 half marathons, and many smaller races. I've traveled to eight countries including Croatia, Crete, and Thailand. In 2010, I got to run from Asia to Europe in the Eurasia marathon in Istanbul, Turkey. In 2013, I ran on the Great Wall of China during the Great Wall Marathon. My last big adventure was running with wild animals in the Victoria Falls Half Marathon in Zimbabwe! It’s the adventures of the traveling runner that Abernathy says she believes will help people ‘Come Back Alive” from various challenges including depression and grief. . On Sunday th September 20 in Houston’s Lively Heights district “I HOPE I COME BACK ALIVE” will introduce the public to the benefits of running and tourism at benjy’s restaurant on Washington. Abernathy has planned to participate in local marathons and practice runs throughout Houston. She has plans to travel abroad to Africa and well as a future run to CUBA. I keep a tight grip on my health, self esteem, empowerment, and my ability to make positive life choices. It is a wonderful experience to do this with groups of people and that’s what we will accomplish when people join our social running community…..says Abernathy. Abernathy’s company will give back to organizations whose mission deals with building selfesteem and fighting depression and other challenges facing people today.
