Notecard # 8 – Unconscious Choking Adult/Child/Infant
Step 1 – Check the scene, check the person
Step 2 – Tap and shout (Child/Infant - you must obtain consent)
Step 3 – No response; Call 9-1-1
Step 4 – Tilt head, lift chin, check for signs of life for 10 seconds
Step 5 – Give 2 rescue breaths
Step 6 – If breaths don’t go in…
- Reposition airway - tilt head back farther
- Give 2 more rescue breaths
- If breaths still don’t go in…
Step 7 – Find hand position in the middle of the chest, Position shoulders over
hands
Step 8 – Perform Chest Compressions
- Adult - 30 times about 1 ½ - 2 inches
- Child - 30 times about 1-1 ½ inches
- Infant - 30 times with 2 fingers ½ - 1 inch
(about 100 per minute)
Step 9 – Lift jaw and tongue, look inside mouth
- if you see object remove with finger
Step 10 – Give rescue breaths - - if breaths still do not go in…
Step 11 – Continue cycles of chest compressions, foreign object check, and
rescue breaths until • The scene becomes unsafe
• Object is removed and chest rises with breaths
• Victim breathes on their own
• EMS arrives
• You become too tired to continue
