Many coal mines closed because the need for coal in Britain was no longer as great as it had once :$$3M&K0$2-"#2#-+&B*'&3,B&;$3$"*-$4&:+&A,B$"&'-*-#,3'&:("3#3;&,#0&,"&;*'&%",)&-.$&h,"-.&9$*&,"&#3&
some cases by the use of nuclear energy. Whereas in 1948 most homes were heated by open coal 1"$'&4("#3;&-.$&B#3-$"L&:+&-.$&DEGJ'&),'-&.*4&2$3-"*0&.$*-#3;&A,B$"$4&:+&;*'L&,#0&,"&$0$2-"#2#-+M
The reduced need for coal came at the same time that the workers in the coal mining industry were disagreeing with their bosses. In 1972 the coal miners went on strike, leading to huge problems in British working life, including the temporary introduction of a three­day working week so that electricity could be ‘rationed’.
