However, our reviewer was left wondering what all thefuss was about

To the fans that enjoyed The Musical
Reviewing anything, whether theatre,
music, books or any other art. is difficult. The
writer must put their view of the work out there
and then justify that view while giving enough
unbiased information to allow those who might
think differently a chance to decide for them­
selves.
There is, after all. no single standard for
taste, and no single measure of worthiness.
Which is why, on Friday night, I hated what
everyone else in the Oakville Centre for the
Performing Arts seemed to enjoy.
The Musical Box is a Genesis tribute band.
For the uninitiated. Genesis was a progressiverock band that made its mark in the ’70s with
albums like The Lamb Lies Down on
Box, Genesis still speaks to them. The
large scale, over-the-top, rock opera
stuff is still appealing.

Some, in fact, say Genesis created prog-rock
with long, meandering songs and experimental,
innovative approaches to melody.
The band’s two most famous members, who
both went on to successful solo careers, were
Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins.
On Friday, The Musical Box re-created a
Genesis concert, playing songs from Selling
England by the Pound. The crowd at the
Oakville Centre was made up mainly of mid­
dle-aged men who bobbed their heads along
with the music and afterwards reminisced
about why they smoked so much pot in the
’70s.
They were excited, and when the First heavy
chords came from the synthesizer, they hooted
and hollered as they probably did at the origi­
nal concert 30 years before.
Unfortunately, before The Musical Box
took to the stage on Friday. I knew little about
Genesis. For example, I didn't know the music
was long-winded and boring, and I didn't
know their sets and props, and Peter Gabriel's
outlandish outfits, were as ridiculous as they
were.
I didn't realize, either, that out of context,
most music is utterly horrible and entirely irrel(S ee ‘M u sic’ page C2)
