At the Contois School of Music we utilize the latest in piano education technology. Students learn on
interactive digital pianos which make learning music more fun and educational. Song and lesson files that
we use can be loaded into compatible Yamaha Portable keyboards and Digital Pianos for interactive
practicing at home. Audio files are also available for use with any music player device and keyboard.
PreK-5th grade students concentrate on sight-reading and performance skills using the Hal Leonard
Student Piano Method. Ear training, music fundamentals and theory are also explored using the latest PC
software programs. Older students explore music theory and move into more advanced music studies
and methods used by the Berklee School of Music and other music sources.
Our guitar teachers use the latest in notation and recording software such as Pro Tools and Sibelius to
help teach students how to sight-read, improvise, compose and learn the fundamentals of the acoustic,
electric & bass guitar. In depth study of rhythm, scales, arpeggios, and chord inversions are encouraged
with both Berklee Press and Hal Leonard educational materials. Personal musical tastes are explored and
students are encouraged to learn a diverse range of styles to help them develop into well-rounded
musicians.
Our drum instructors encourage students to embrace all aspects of drumming and percussion by learning
on both electronic and acoustic drum kits. Electronic drum kits provide sound isolating headphone jacks,
built in metronomes, and accompanying rhythm tracks, while the acoustic kit provides the natural feel,
response and sound for live performance. Drum instructors focus on reading ability, technique and
performance using the Berklee Press and Hal Leonard teaching methods.
Our vocal lessons at the Contois School of Music concentrate on the fundamental building blocks of
singing. Students are encouraged to work on breath management, develop a successful practice routine,
and work on phrasing, intervals and volume control. Our vocal teachers are proficient on guitar and/or
piano so that vocal students can pursue an instrument of their choice along with their vocal lesson. Background tracks are also supplied for practicing songs at home.
Once a student has maintained a mastery of basic skills on their instrument of choice, they are ready to
join our Band Performance Class. This weekly class gets students playing with other students of similar
age and ability, and teaches them the basics of getting a band together. Students will learn about
performing on stage, understanding vocal harmony, music technology, chart reading, live sound, and
much more. Band students are required to be enrolled in our private lesson program and will spend time
during their private lesson working on their specific parts and arrangements for the band class. Please see
our lesson administrator or your child’s instructor for the basic prerequisites for enrolling in this class.
