Gwinnett County Public Schools Spring 2013 Celebrate! CLASS of 2013 “Do not follow where the path may lead. Go, instead, where there is no path and leave a trail.” Ralph Waldo Emerson This publication captures a snapshot of the Class of 2013, with photos, facts, and just a few of the scholarships and awards garnered by members of this outstanding group of students. We know that many, many more of our students earned prestigious honors and scholarships that are not part of this publication. And we estimate that listing just the names of all of our graduates would take 71 pages! Congratulations to all of the members of the Class of 2013. We are so very proud of you! A Salute to Our Seniors They’ve spent roughly 2,340 days in the classroom— give or take a few days for chicken pox and class trips, competitions and college visits. They’ve worked hard, learned much, and dreamed more as they prepared for what comes next. For more than 10,500 Gwinnett students, that next step— high school graduation— is almost here, and they’re ready… ready for college, career, and citizenship. Most graduation ceremonies for our 21 diploma-granting high schools will be held in high school stadiums or the Gwinnett Center. Whether they are among the first to walk across the stage on May 20 with Phoenix High graduates, one of the last, tossing their caps in the air on May 25 with other Archer seniors, or somewhere in between, our graduates certainly can be proud of their accomplishments, as individuals and as a record-breaking class. A high percentage of seniors— 84%— are headed to universities, colleges, and postsecondary schools in Georgia and around the country next fall, with one in every five college-bound graduates offered at least one scholarship. As of April 2013, more than $137 million in academic, athletic, and military scholarships has been offered to graduates, the largest-ever scholarship tally for GCPS by nearly a third. And that doesn’t even include HOPE Scholars, typically about a third of our seniors. The majority of scholarships, more than $86.4 million, was earned for academic achievement (not including HOPE awards or full scholarships for GCPS’ 12 Gates Millennium Scholars). This year’s senior student athletes earned more than $45.4 million in athletic scholarships. Again this year, 13 graduates earned military service academy appointments, worth more than $5.2 million in scholarships. We salute these future military leaders along with the 455 seniors who have chosen to serve their country, entering military service after graduation. About 650 students will enter the workplace after graduation, many of them armed with credentials and certificates earned through our technical education program and sought after by local employers. Academically, the Class of 2013 is off the charts. A record number of seniors are Honor Graduates— 2,318 to be exact— graduating with a grade percent average of 90 or better. Among these Honor Graduates are each school’s highest-ranking students— the valedictorian (1st in class) and the salutatorian (2nd in class). Another record, nearly half of Gwinnett seniors took on the challenge and rigor of college-level Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) courses their last year in high school, taking a total of 11,823 AP or IB classes. In addition, 518 seniors were dual-enrolled, earning both high school and college credit. That’s more than double the dual-enrollment count for 2012. Look for more fun facts, figures, and photos from the Class of 2013 throughout this issue. 47 Grayson seniors earned college credit through the dual enrollment program. Parents of graduating seniors take locker decoration very seriously. One Parkview student has had perfect attenda nce for 12 years, 15 students had perfect att endance all through hig h school. More than 20% of Duluth seniors are Honor Graduates, graduating with a 90-plus average. Six Berkmar seniors were awarded full-ride academic QuestBridge scholarships. Celebrating the The Norcross High Cla ss of 2013 took 1,152 AP or IB courses.
