distribution, metabolism and excretion. Other
topics include aging’s influence on polypharmacy
and the impact of grapefruit juice. Receptor

receptor blockers (antagonists) and drugs that
do BOTH. Anti-cholinergic drugs and their side
effects will be emphasized.
Drugs that influence Inflammation and
Immunity – Aspirin, NSAIDS, corticosteroids,
DMARDs for autoimmune diseases, NEW drugs

respiratory medications. Do you have a clear
understanding of the various classifications
of respiratory medications? Do you know the
difference between a DPI and MDI? Which
respiratory medications require oral rinsing
after each use to prevent infection? Are you
comfortable using capnography to minimize
respiratory complications? Do you know how to
teach your patients simple techniques in energy
conservation in order to maximize the efficacy of
their respiratory medications? Strategies will be
demonstrated and participants will have time to
practice
August 1 G Barb Bancroft
Neuropharmacology... You’re going to love
an entire session on neurotransmitters and
the drugs used to block or boost them. Learn

Alzheimer’s and the NMDA receptor blocker,
memantine (Namenda). Learn all about
serotonin & “sara’s” functions, dysfunctions and
drugs to treat deficiencies and excesses. GABA
(“mother’s”) inhibitory role in the brain and
“mother’s little helpers” (benzodiazepines) in the
role with sleep, anxiety, and alcohol withdrawal.

their role in pain management and seizure
disorders. Dopamine’s role in health and disease
including addiction, ADHD, PD, RLS and sexual
function. Drugs that boost or block dopamine.

diabetes, including the “Drug of the Decade”,
metformin. Learn the pros and cons of the
various drug categories--the gliptins, the incretin
mimetics, the various types of insulin, the
sulfonylureas, and the last remaining “glitazone”-pio (Actos).
Chemotherapy... Targeted drug therapy has
finally arrived! The monoclonal antibodies
(“mabs”) have revolutionized the treatment of
cancer as have the tyrosine kinase inhibitors
(“nibs”). Review of the cell cycle and how the
various drugs inhibit the growth of cancer cells
will be included. Anti-infectives... drugs for bugs.
Antibiotics, anti-viral drugs (including vaccines),
antiherpetic drugs (the “cyclovirs”) and antifungal drugs (the “conazoles” and others) will be
discussed. The plethora of antibiotic classes will
