Barb Bancroft RN, MSN, PNP Barb Bancroft is a widely acclaimed national speaker, noted for her humorous, entertaining and information packed seminars. She is author of four books—her latest, Kiss My Asparagus, An Essential Guide to Nutrition’s Role in Health and Disease. Barb has held graduate faculty positions at the University of Virginia and the University of Arkansas and provided courses on Advanced Pathophysiology, Pharmacology and Physical Assessment to both graduate and undergraduate students. Theresa Till RN, EdD, CCRN Theresa is Professor of Nursing in Springfield, IL where she is a didactic and clinical instructor for professional nursing students. Other topics include aging’s influence on polypharmacy and the impact of grapefruit juice. Receptor physiology —receptor boosters (agonists) and receptor blockers (antagonists) and drugs that do BOTH. Anti-cholinergic drugs and their side effects will be emphasized. Drugs that influence Inflammation and Immunity – Aspirin, NSAIDS, corticosteroids, DMARDs for autoimmune diseases, NEW drugs for autoimmune diseases including MS, RA; interferons for MS, vs. interferons for Hepatitis B and C, interleukins, monoclonal antibodies that target inflammatory mediators (infliximab/ Remicade, adalimumab/Humira and more), and the new drugs that target tyrosine kinase for RA. Cardiac Drugs… This workshop simplifies the maze of information related to cardiac medications. Develop a clear understanding how the various classes of cardiac medications differ. What do you need to know about the new cardiac medications (Brilinta, Xarelto, Pradaxa, Eliquis, Livalo)? Review the relationship between Vitamin D deficiency and muscle pain from lipid lowering drugs. We will cover herbal remedies that interfere with the action of several cardiac medications. Respiratory Drugs… Come to this session and inhale current concepts about the most common respiratory medications. Do you have a clear understanding of the various classifications of respiratory medications? Do you know the difference between a DPI and MDI? Which respiratory medications require oral rinsing after each use to prevent infection? Are you comfortable using capnography to minimize respiratory complications? Do you know how to teach your patients simple techniques in energy conservation in order to maximize the efficacy of their respiratory medications? Learn about the acetylcholinesterase inhibitors for Alzheimer’s and the NMDA receptor blocker, memantine (Namenda). Learn all about serotonin & “sara’s” functions, dysfunctions and drugs to treat deficiencies and excesses. GABA (“mother’s”) inhibitory role in the brain and “mother’s little helpers” (benzodiazepines) in the role with sleep, anxiety, and alcohol withdrawal. The “gaba” drugs (gabapentin, pregabalin) and their role in pain management and seizure disorders. Dopamine’s role in health and disease including addiction, ADHD, PD, RLS and sexual function. Chemotherapy... Targeted drug therapy has finally arrived! The monoclonal antibodies (“mabs”) have revolutionized the treatment of cancer as have the tyrosine kinase inhibitors (“nibs”). Review of the cell cycle and how the various drugs inhibit the growth of cancer cells will be included. Anti-infectives... drugs for bugs. Antibiotics, anti-viral drugs (including vaccines), antiherpetic drugs (the “cyclovirs”) and antifungal drugs (the “conazoles” and others) will be discussed.
