This award is that it is made to a young person less than 35 years of age who is considered to have provided a significant active role within the Region by their contribution to an interesting or notable project.
The aim is to celebrate individual excellence in Transport Planning and/or Civil Engineering in the highways or transportation field.
In addition, t his year’s regional winner will be entered into the bi-annual
National Colas Presentation
Award , which aims to encourage members of CIHT to develop their presentation skills in front of an audience of practising CIHT members.
The criteria for the award is that it is made to a young person less than 35 years of age who is considered to have provided a significant active role within the Region by their contribution to an interesting or notable project. The aim is to celebrate individual excellence in Transport Planning and/or Civil Engineering in the highways or transportation field.
The entry should describe an interesting project or activity in which the entrant has been involved.
This can be a completed transport scheme, a relevant aspect of their job (particularly if it is in some way unique), a technical innovation, a research project, or some more general issue such as how to attract people to the profession. It is emphatically not restricted to engineering or research.
Note both the Yorkshire and The Humber Region Young Professional Award and the Regional
Colas Award will be judged on the individual’s involvement in a project and on presentation skills. www.ciht.org.uk

An independent panel of judges will be assessing presentation skills as well as looking for details the entrant played in the project, how this developed them professionally. They will also be looking at how the entrant went over or beyond what was expected and how they demonstrated innovation or added value as part of the project in addition to what they learned and how this has made them a better professional.
A shortlist of entrants will be invited to give a presentation of their submission to an audience of
CIHT Yorkshire and The Humber Region committee members, allowing 10 minutes for the talk and up to 10 minutes for questions on the afternoon of 23 rd
September 2015.
The submission should be made electronically by Friday 4 th
September 2015. The entry should take the form of a 1000 word submission describing an interesting project or activity in which the entrant has been involved. A winner will be determined by a panel of judges as described above.
The winners will be announced at the Yorkshire & The Humber Region Awards Dinner Dance on 9 th
October at the Hilton City Hotel in Leeds, and will be awarded a certificate, a small gift courtesy of
Colas, and a perpetual sculpture of John “Blind Jack” Metcalf. Winners of the Awards will have details published in a subsequent issue of Transportation Professional.
The winner will also then be entered into the bi-annual national Colas Presentation Award, with the
National Final for 2015 being held on Friday 6 th
November, hosted by CIHT at Britannia Walk.
Candidates may give the same or a different talk in the region and national finals. Expenses for the regional winner are paid to attend the final.
The ‘top’ prize is an expenses paid visit to Paris for the winner and partner, including dinner and a visit to the Colas Laboratories as well as free time in Paris. The runners up (all the finalists except the winner) will each receive a cheque for £100, courtesy of Colas.

1. Entry is free.
2. Submissions must include a completed and scanned entry form, accompanying your entry, and emailed to rob.mccartney@sky.com
. The entry document should be in Microsoft Word or PDF format.
3. If you are entering more than one award, please complete a separate entry form for each award.
4. Submissions must clearly explain how the entry meets the criteria specified. There should be content of interest to a wide range of members, which could include such as technical excellence, innovation, sustainability, value for money, and research value.
5. Judging for both the regional award and the national award will be based on the following criteria:
Content: Structure, Clarity of thought
Presentation: Appropriate style, getting the message across
Dealing with questions: Style and quality
Overall impression
Judging the national final will be by a panel comprising the President or Vice-President, the Chief Executive, a
Colas representative and a senior member of the host region.
6. Entries are limited to 1000 words only; submissions will be accepted over this length but will be judged on the first 1000 words. Entries must include a single paragraph summary outline and photograph of the project which may be included in a tabletop booklet on the night of the awards.
7. Electronic copies only will be accepted.
8. Presentations may or may not include an electronic presentation in Powerpoint or similar format.
9. Entries may be accompanied by supporting material (eg. illustrations, plans or results of monitoring studies) in electronic format, but these will be viewed at the judge’s discretion.
10. Entries failing to meet the specified criteria or in the wrong format will not be considered.
11. All material submitted will be treated as available for publication in awards-related articles within
Transportation Professional magazine and promotional materials developed for the Awards, unless otherwise copyright protected.

The decision of the judges appointed by the Region will be final. No correspondence will be entered into with entrants concerning the decision of the judges on any matter associated with the CIHT Yorkshire & The Humber Awards 2015.
