THE JURY IS OUT FOR THE INAUGURAL PRESIDENT’S DESIGN AWARD
The jury for the upcoming President’s Design Award has now been
officially announced. There are four award categories this year: (a) Architecture &
Urban Design, (b) Interior Design, (c) Visual Communications, and (d) Product
and Industrial Design. The jury members, comprising several renowned
international designers, are in Singapore from 28 to 30 August 2006 for the
judging process. They will nominate suitable candidates from each category,
submit their recommendations to Chairman of the President’s Design Award
Steering Committee, who will in turn submit the decision to the President for final
approval.

The President’s Design Award Steering Committee is chaired by Mr
Edmund Cheng, Chairman of DesignSingapore Council. Mr Cheng is also the
Deputy Chairman of Wing Tai Holdings Ltd and Managing Director of Wing Tai
Land. He is joined by four other members including Mrs Cheong Koon Hean,
CEO of Urban Redevelopment Authority, Singapore; Mr Roland Krueger,
Managing Director of BMW Asia Pte Ltd; Mr Lee Suan Hiang, CEO of National
Arts Council and Dr Milton Tan, MICA Fellow (Design) at the Ministry of
Information, Communications and the Arts, Singapore, and Director of the
DesignSingapore Council.

The President’s Design Award is co-presented by the DesignSingapore
Council and the Urban Redevelopment Authority, Singapore to promote greater
design excellence in our nation. The award is an acknowledgement of good
designs in the fields of architecture and urban design, product and industrial
design, interior design and visual communication design. Two distinct, meritbased categories of the Awards are offered annually. One category is for
‘Singapore Designers of the Year’, the other is for ‘Singapore Designs of the
Year’.

For the discipline of Architecture and Urban Design (A&UD) under the
category of ‘Singapore Designs of the Year’, separate awards will be given out
for the following projects involving Singapore citizens and permanent residents of
Singapore: (i) Built-in-Singapore projects, and (ii) Overseas projects.

The jury members for Architecture & Urban Design are:
(i) Mrs Cheong Koon Hean, CEO of Urban Redevelopment Authority, Singapore;
(ii) Mr Shozo Baba, President, Architectural Communication Consultant Limited;
(iii) Mr Alan Choe, Consultant Architect / Planner of Alan F C Choe Consultant
(Singapore); and
(iv) Ms Rita Soh, Architect, SIA President and BOA Board Member (Singapore).

Jury members for the Interior Design category are:
(i) Ms Madeline Lester, President of International Federation of Interior
Architects/Designers (IFI) and Managing Director of Madeline Lester +
Associates (Sydney/Australia);
(ii) Ms Shashi Caan, Principal of Shashi Caan Collective and Chair of Interior
Design at Parsons School of Design (New York, USA); and
(iii) Mr Kerry Hill, Principal of Kerry Hill Architects (Singapore / Australia).
7.
Jury members for Product and Industrial Design category are:
(i) Professor, Dr Peter Zac, who is President of International Council of Societies
of Industrial Design (ICSID); President of Red Dot GmbH & CoKG; President of
Design Zentrum; and Professor for Business Communication at the University of
Applied Sciences Berlin (Essen, Germany);
(ii) Ms Verena Kloos, President of BMW Group DesignworksUSA (Los Angeles,
USA) and Mr Jae-Jin Shim, Vice-President of Digital Display & Media Design Lab
Corporate Design Center, LG Electronics Inc. (Seoul, Korea).

The jury members for Visual Communications are:
(i) Professor Don Ryun Chang, President-Elect of International Council of
Graphic Design Associations (ICOGRADA), and Department Chair of Visual
Communications Design at Hongik University (Seoul, Korea);
(ii) Ms Lim Sau Hoong, CEO and Executive Creative Director of 10AM
Communications (Singapore); and
(iii) Dr Milton Tan, MICA Fellow (Design) at the Ministry of Information,
Communications and the Arts, Singapore, and Director of the DesignSingapore
Council.

About the President’s Design Award

The President’s Design Award recognises the significant contributions and
achievements of design talents in our nation. It is the highest honour accorded to
designers and designs from all disciplines that have made a strong and positive
impact on the art, design and cultural landscape of Singapore. The award also
provides a mark of excellence for Singapore designers and students to aspire
towards. While engendering national pride among Singaporeans for outstanding
designs and leading designers in Singapore, it in turn nurtures among
Singaporeans a greater awareness and interest in quality designs in all areas.

About DesignSingapore Council
Design changes and improves lives, inspires creativity and new forms of
expression. It also enhances business competitiveness in today’s crowded
marketplace.
DesignSingapore is Singapore’s response to these propositions and
opportunities. As a national initiative, DesignSingapore aims to place Singapore
on the world map for design creativity. It looks to developing a thriving, multidisciplinary design cluster of industries and activities in Singapore that has
relevance and impact globally. The initiative also aims to bring design to
business boardrooms, new audiences and new markets.
The DesignSingapore Council, set up since August 2003 by the Ministry of
Information, Communications and the Arts, is the public organisation for
promotion and development of Singapore design.
In 2005, the Council presented SINGAPOREdge featuring 100 of Singapore’s
design talents in London and launched the inaugural Singapore Design Festival
with 134 events contributed by 88 partners. The Council has also taken
Singapore design exhibitions to the 2004 Venice Biennale International
Architecture Exhibition, Sao Paulo Architecture Biennial in 2005, World Expo
2005 at Aichi and, most recently, the Salone Internazionale Del Mobile in April
2006. Next on the agenda will be the Venice Biennale and London Design
Festival in September 2006.

Mr Edmund Cheng has been serving as
the
Chairman

DesignSingapore
Council since August 2003, and is
concurrently the Chairman of the
President’s Design Award Steering
Committee. Mr Cheng is also the
Deputy Chairman of the Singaporelisted Wing Tai Holdings Limited and
Managing Director of Wing Tai Land.
Besides his experience as a private
developer,
Mr
Cheng
has
been
extensively involved with government
agencies in projects relating to
Urban Planning and Building Arts as the Chairman of task forces and
non-profit art institutions. Notable
ones
include
the
Geylang
East
Development Guide Plan for URA, the
REDAS
Building
Art
Fund
and
Sculpture
Square,
Singapore's
arts
dedicated
3-dimensional
promotion and exhibition facility.
Mrs Cheong-Chua Koon Hean is the
Chief Executive Officer of the Urban
Redevelopment Authority (URA), which
is the planning and conservation
authority of Singapore. She is also
concurrently the Deputy Secretary
(Special Duties) in the Ministry of
National Development. She advises
the
Minister
for
National
Development on land use and planning
policies, the property market, the
government land sales programme as
well as public housing policies. Mrs

Mr Lee Suan Hiang is currently the

Lee was awarded the National Day
Public
Administration
Gold
and
Silver Medals in 1998 and 1992.

Tan

Transport
Authority (LTA) and President of the
Harvard Club of Singapore.
Prior to this, Dr Tan was Head of
Architecture
at
the
National
University of Singapore (NUS) from
1998-2002. Under his leadership, Dr
Tan was instrumental in reshaping
the NUS architecture program to be
design and research driven. He was
the founding Director for its Centre
for Advanced Studies in Architecture
(CASA)
in
1994-98
for
academic
research, as well as its Centre for
Design Excellence (CDEx) in 19982000 for design research.

Prof. Dr. Peter Zec is currently the
President
of
the
international
umbrella organisation of design ICSID
(International Council of Societies
of Industrial Design) and will have a

design in the coming years. He is
also the President of red dot GmbH,
as well as the internationally known
German design centre in Essen Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen.
Prof. Dr. Zec is a media and art
scientist and psychologist, who has
been working in the design field for
over 20 years. He has held lectures,
and is still lecturing, in over 30
countries all over the world. As an
expert in the field of design and
communications he has written six
books and is publisher of two expert
yearbooks.
As the President of DesignworksUSA,
Ms Verena Kloos oversees the day-today
operations
and
strategic
direction of the California-based
international
strategic
design
consultancy owned by BMW Group.
