NSLS proudly states that, "We Build Leaders Who Make a Better World." The NSCC chapter The National Society of Leadership and Success established its charter on the Nashville State Campus in 2008. Since then NSLS has been one of the premier and fast growing honor societies on campus. The national office's mission states that, "The Society is an organization that helps people discover and achieve their goals. What can you do with a degree like that?” Many people consider this degree the dark horse of humanities and some have even called it “useless”. Yet it’s safe to say that this is, without a doubt, not even close to the truth about the infamous degree. Many English majors have advanced in a variety of careers – from magazines to teaching and even outside of the typical fields like chemical companies, works hard to encompass the values of NSLS by setting a high standard for the students invited to join. Student must have a minimum GPA of 3.5 in order to be considered. Once a student accepts the challenge of becoming an inducted member, students must complete a variety of steps. First, a student must attend an orientation and the Leadership Training. Leadership training Johnathan Thompson, Contributor Fortune 500 companies, and even in hospitality corporate management. Here are some options of careers that one can obtain with a major in English. Of course, the first career that pops into most minds when it comes to this degree is teaching English. Whether middle school, high school, or even elementary school, most teachers obtain a Bachelor’s degree in English with a teaching concentration. Universities and community colleges tend to require further studying, with Continued on Page 2 The Nashville Predators National Hockey League franchise has been in operation since 1998, for the 2015 season a shakeup inside the organization brought about many changes. The Nashville Predators are completely different from when they first took to the ice in 2008. Gone are the days and nights of seeing Tom Fitzgerald as the first Predator to wear the Captain’s “C” on his sweater, original starting goaltender Mike Dunham making 30 to 40 huge saves per game to keep the Predators in line Photo Courtesy of David McCarger for wins or ties. Who can forget the first ever Predators’ AllStar Sergei Krivokrasov roofing power play goals into the top of the net, or the year-by-year progres- sion of the first Predators’ draft pick David Legwand developing into one of the best NHL players taking to the ice today. Also, if some English majors are not interested in teaching, they could always go a different route by working in school administrative offices with the rest of the educational staff. Some positions require a high school diploma, such as maintenance, janitorial, security, or cafeteria staff, while others might require a Bachelor’s degree, such as admissions, student aid, human resources, financial aid, or clerical positions. Some may still require further studies, such as school librarians. However, most require a Bachelor’s degree. Another popular medium to enter with an English degree is the journalism field. Whether an editor or writer, most candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree in order to become part of a magazine staff. While some may say journalism is a dying field, this is not so with all the innovations that have been brought to the field in today’s technologically-focused world. Social media, blogs, web pages, and SEO content pages are new and recent innovations that have merely evolved from their earlier pen-and-paper writing ancestors. According to glassdoor.com, most web writing and editing positions pay $30,000 to $60,000 per year, and the web editor national average is listed as just a bit over $49,000 per year. Many English majors enter into the Human Resources fields or become Public Relations Specialists. These jobs require leaders who are excellent communicators as well as talent seekers, while PR is mostly associated around communication as well. Both careers would be perfect for English majors, and usually require a candidate to obtain a 4-year degree in order to qualify for a position in a company. There tend to be an abundance of job openings for these sorts of positions as well, as simplyhired. com lists close to 600,000 job openings combined for both careers across the country. English degree holders also tend to gravitate toward Marketing and Sales after graduating college. These careers require leaders who can not only communicate orally and in writing, but also in ways that will push ideas and products. Sales people must set up events and convince people that something is worth pursuing. Candidates can also go a step further and obtain a career as a marketing writer since that falls more in line with educational requirements. A degree not only in Marketing or English, but Communications or Journalism could also work for this type of career. Another popular career to get into with an English degree is the tech- nical writing field. Generally, one must hold a four year degree, but a bit of computer or technical background helps as well. It also seems to be one of the more popular writing careers as it currently lists over 7,000 job openings nationwide. Librarians are also popular when it comes to English degree careers. Some typically require further studying after a Bachelor’s degree, sometimes a Master's or Ph. D., but many still require four year degrees as well. Knowledge of books, reading, and writing are always a plus for this career, and organized, detail-oriented candidates usually advance the quickest in the field. Communications specialist is another suitable career for English majors. These typically take four year degrees in a related field, though many others pursue further studies. For the past month, there were over 2,000,000 listed jobs relating to communications across the country right now according to simplyhired.com, and most pay between $32,000 to the six figure mark according to glassdoor.com, with a national average of a little over $56,000 a year. English majors can, indeed, find suitable careers with their degrees. How students use education is what matters most. While some careers may seem to be drying up, opportunities tend to even out when combining all the previous career listings. Accounting alone has close to 600,000 job openings online and this field is said to be one of the most abundant in the country at the moment. All the combined careers for English degree holders would easily hold close to as many openings, if not more. No degree is useless as long as it is used properly to advance in an according career. ■ New Building to Open in 2015 Office of Student Life: www.nscc.edu/studentlife Spring 2015.indd 2 2/4/15 10:14 AM Page 3 Spring 2015 Predators Continued... like Paul Kariya and Peter Forsberg stopped by to help the Predators make playoff pushes. Some of the things that have changed were bad, others were good, but the tail end of last season was a huge part of Predators history. Here’s what new for the 2014-2015 season: None of the original Nashville Predators are here anymore, including head coach Barry Trotz. Trotz is now behind the bench of the Washington Capitals after being released during the offseason. David Legwand was traded towards the end of the 2013-2014 regular season to the Detroit Red Wings, making him the last original Predators player to leave “Smashville”. Other than the departures, new additions were big news in the offseason. Veteran NHL head coach Peter Laviolette is now behind the bench of the Predators. Also, prolific scorer James Neal was ac- quired by the Predators in a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins that sent gritty forward Patric Hornquist and fellow forward Nick Spalling to the Penguins. General Manager David Polie made a few more shrewd moves signing one time Phoenix Coyote Mike Riberio to a one year deal, and bringing in hard hitting defenseman Anton Volchenknov. Off the ice, and behind the microphone, new faces and voices will be hitting the airwaves: former Predators enforcer and former radio analyst Stu Grimson now joins the television team as an analyst, replacing former NHL head coach and original Preds broadcaster Terry Crisp, who now hosts the pregame and post game shows, and also reports during intermissions. Grimson will be alongside Crisp’s longtime partner Pete Weber, a broadcast veteran who has done both radio and TV play-byplay. Also, former longtime Preds assistant coach NSLS continued... Peterson will sit alongside Willy Daunic, who is now in his first full season of play-by-play as he replaced Tom Callahan very early on last season. Their 2015 season has begun with a flurry on one goal nail biters, a 9-2 blowout of the Toronto Maple Leafs, a host of comeback wins, overtime victories, and heart pounding shoot out wins. Success on the ice has paid off as premier defenseman Shea Webber and super goalie Pekka Rinne made the 2015 NHL All Star team. Also, rookie phenom Fillip Forsberg has garnered a lot of attention as he leads the Preds in points this season. His hard work landed him a day is designed to give future inductees an overview of who and what NSLS is. It also gives student an opportunity to network with others, do a leadership assessment exercise and to be introduced to new leadership concepts. The next step is for pending members to be divided into Success Network Teams. SNT groups meet at least three times each semester. At the meetings groups spend time learning leadership principles and how to set goals for themselves. The biggest successes for students are from these meetings. Students spend time in SNT encouraging each other to push the limits of what they think can be accomplished for themselves and become a support system for each other. During the semester the students are also required to attend a minimum of three Speaker Broadcast. These broadcasts are seminars from many industries leaders and provide a great deal of motivation and understanding of leadership. The final and most vital requirement for pending members is community service. In order to be induct- spot on the All Star roster as well. So far, the adjustments to the Predators staff and lineup has paid dividends on the ice and have propelled the Preds to the top of the NHL’s Central Division, alongside the Chicago Blackhawks. The Predators hope to keep their momentum going after the All Star break and deep into a Stanley Cup Playoff run.■ ed, students must spend time completing some form of community service. This is key to who the NSCC and the Society is. A group of student giving back to the community and setting the example for what a student organization should be. In the fall the NSCC chapter took that concept a step further by collecting food for 2nd Harvest. Current and pending members collected ninety eight pounds of food that was donated to the 2nd Harvest Food Bank and continued a tradition of excellence within the community .■ Office of Student Life: www.nscc.edu/studentlife Spring 2015.indd 3 2/4/15 10:14 AM Page 4 Spring 2015 Nashville State Community College HAVEN Sexual Assault Prevention Training Course Spring 2015 Take a Training Course For a Chance to Win an iPad!!
