MYPSCIENCE Name: Rajat LAB REPORT Group: 3 Lab Report Research Question : How is y dependent on x? Will using different pH liquids affect the growth of the mung beans? Variables Manipulation x - Independent (what will I change?) Change the pH, 3, 5 & 7 pH y - Dependent (what will I measure?) How many Mung Beans germinate Plant Germination rate Controlled (what will I keep the same?) Amount of sunlight, Amount of pH (20ml) Amount of Seeds 20ml for each pH, Keep the dish in the same place, (temperature) 3 seeds in each petri dish Hypothesis If I increase pH 7 into the mung beans then there will be an increase in the height of the mung beans because according to http://theagricos.com, water causes the seed to swell and soften which makes the plant breakthrough. PLANNING Procedure : What will I do? - Prepare 3 petri dishes - After preparing the dishes, then spread cotton all over each of the petri dishes. - Put 3 mung beans into each petri dish - Measure the ph liquids with the tube (20ml) - add 20ml of each pH in each petri dish (label each petri dish as “ph 2, ph 5 etc...) - Keep the petri dishes in same place with the same amount of sunlight - Leave it for 48 hours to see if there is any reaction - Observe the plants each day - Record Data Materials : What do I need? - 3 petri dishes - 3 Plastic lids - 9 mung bean seeds - Cotton - Tube - Beaker - 30cm Ruler - 20ml of each pH (pH 3 (changed to 2), 5 & 7) DATA COLLECTION AND PROCESSING MYPSCIENCE Raw Data Table How will you record your quantitative data? pH Germinated seeds 2 3 out of 3 5 3 out of 3 7 2 out of 3 Observations What qualitative data will you record? After doing the experiment which was pH and the mung beans, my observations were that all of the pH with the seeds in it germinated except one seed in pH 7. The tallest height for the mung beans in this experiment was 1.5cm which was in the pH 2 petri dish. After seeing most of the seeds the biggest seed was in pH 2. For pH 2 and 5 all the seeds germinated 100% except pH 7 where 2 out of 3 seeds germinated. The color of the cotton has changed to green and yellow color which was from the mung beans. Data Processing Use words and/or math to describe how you will change/manipulate your raw data 100* Amount of seed germination Total of seeds in petri dish i.e: 100*2 = 200 = 66.7% 3 3 Processed Data Table A new table with your processed data pH solutions Percentage of germination (%) 2 100.00% 5 100.00% 7 66.7% Graph Attach your graph to the back of the lab write-up sheet Mung Bean Germination on pH in percentage Percentage of Germination (%) 100.00% 80.00% Percent of Germination (%) DATA COLLECTION AND PROCESSING MYPSCIENCE 60.00% 40.00% 20.00% 0% pH 2 pH 5 pH Levels pH 7 MYPSCIENCE Conclusion EVALUATION AND CONCLUSION Tell how your question was answered My hypothesis was “If I increase pH 7 into the mung beans then there will be an increase in the height of the mung beans because according to http://theagricos.com, water causes the seed to swell and soften which makes the plant breakthrough.” The data did not support my hypothesis. As you can see above in my graph, when starting from a low pH and increasing to a high pH, the number of germination will decrease. According to my experiment, pH 2 has the best growth because it germinated up to 1.5cm, but pH 5 didn’t germinate as long as pH 2 did. Overall the mung beans for both pH 2 and 5 had a total of 3 seeds that germinated, which means 100% germination. My hypothesis was contradicted by the data because for the seeds in the pH 7 petri dish, the total amount of seeds that germinated was 66.7% which means 2 out of 3 seeds germinated. So after doing my experiment, I now know that lower pH levels can help mung beans germinate! The best mung beans that germinated were pH 2. During planning and setting up my experiment, I had to change the different pH levels, I changed pH 3 and did pH 2 instead, since it was already there for me to use. This didn’t affect my experiment at all since I was just changing the pH liquid. Evaluation Explain anything that happened you did not expect Error Some seeds were closed to each other and didn’t have enough space to grow Some of the seeds that I chosen were old and already harvested and couldn’t be able to germinate Over pouring the amount of the pH solution into the petri dishes with the mung beans Significance Improvement Moderate Spreading the seeds out so that they are easier to grow and not interrupting other seeds in the germination process (low, moderate, high) Moderate High Choose and get fresh seeds and not old and black color ones to use for the experiment. Measure accurately 20ml of each pH liquid or then it might affect the growth of the seeds in each petri dish. Next Testable Question What experiment could you do next? If I planted the same mung beans using soil, will I get the same result as I did with cotton?
