An Overview of Online Learning @ Humber
Delivery and registration continues to grow at a rate of 20 - 25%
each year for the past 5 years.
In 2007-08:
o
Approximately 185 fully online sections each semester
o
Average of 4000 fully online registrants each term
o
About 20% are full-time students
o
About 80% live within 100km of the College.
Humber has committed to developing a minimum of 10 - 15 new
fully online courses each academic year.
Open Learning Centre (OLC)
o Concierge service for fully online students.
o The goal of the centre is to provide our online students with
support from the point of registration to the completion of the
course.
o Award winning website: www.onlinelearning.humber.ca
o Proud member of the OntarioLearn consortium.
Some services include:
9 Provide orientations to online learning at Humber
9 Troubleshoot LMS access issues
9 Follow up with inactive students
9 Assist both faculty & students with coordinating testing
Testing in the OLC
Two models:
o In-class Course - diagnostic testing
o e.g. Dosage Calculation for Nursing
o Fully online course – Final Exam
– e.g. Home Inspections
These models are seen as best practices
within our college and have been adapted
to meet the needs of other departments.
On-campus Testing: Overview
o Testing schedule is posted in the course sites
o Students have a one week window to reserve their test
time (24 hours notice is required to reschedule)
o Test sign-in sheets are generated each day from the
tracking system
o Tests are completed in the OLC computer lab
o Standard testing rules apply:
o Students are expected to show their photo IDs the test
o Adherence to the guidelines provided by the teacher are enforced
(i.e. open/closed book, no calculator etc…)
Off-campus Testing
For paper-based tests:
o Get a copy of current test from instructor
o Send Test Package:
9 Distribute hardcopy
9 Cover page with testing details
9 Prepaid self addressed return envelope
For online tests:
o Test is released for the testing period
o Email is sent to the proctor with password and testing details
o A confirmation of receipt and acknowledgement of
understanding of testing process is requested
Proctor Request Form
An overview:
o Assuming that student has found a suitable proctor at a college/university
s/he is ready to complete the form.
o The form is:
9 web-based developed using dHTML, PHP, and JavaScript
9 dHTML is used to help students fill in the form fields where help
messages pop up
9 PHP is used in the back-end for form submission and email routing to
the OLC reps based on the course selected by students
9 JavaScript is used for form field validation
• Email address validation
• Numeric Student Number
• Course selection
o The details from the completed form go directly to the OLC rep responsible
for coordinating the exam.

Proctor Request Form (cont’d)
o Students enter the information in the form and submit it online

o They get a confirmation

o Once the form’s submitted online, the PHP in the back end works on the
data submitted
o The PHP code looks at the course selected and based on the course
selection, it generatesthe email sequence

The OLC Rep email consists of the information about the student and the proctor
The student confirmation email acknowledges receipt & provides OLC Contact info

Approval Process – Off Campus
o Instructor approves the proctor request
o OLC rep contacts the indicated proctor for verification
9 Probing Questions:
• Relationship to the student?
• Have you proctored before?
• Casual conversation about organization such as if they will be
charging a fee; if they’re an official testing centre or an
academic department within the organization
• No exam details sent to Internet email such as hotmail or gmail

Testing Parameters:
• Computer with Internet access
• Software programs
• Time Availability
• Fee: paid by the student
Challenges
o Rural areas not having access to a computer or the
Internet or applicable software programs
o Lack of access to academic institutions with testing
centres
o International proctors
o Student accounts expired if extension’s requested
o Students with identified disability

FROM THE ONLINE FORM
This notice appears on the computer screen once the student submits the online request.
A confirmation is also sent to the student via the email address provided on the online form.
This is an example of the email that is forwarded to the OLC rep once the student completes the
online form

The exam procedure and additional details are as follows:
Exam Procedure
1. Students will login to their online course site as they normally do at http://mycourses.humber.ca
2. They will log in with their user name and password
4. They will go into the Assessments
5. They will click on the "Final Exam" link
6. They will be prompted to type the password to begin
7. At that point, you will type the following case-sensitive password to release the exam to the
students:

Please note, the password is confidential and cannot be shared with students. The exam duration will be 3
hours. The timer begins as soon as you release the exam to the students.
Additional Exam Details
The following are NOT permitted during the exam:
1. Books
2. Notes
3. Calculator
4. Dictionary
5. Formula Sheet(s)
The following are permitted during the exam:
1. Scrap Papers
