Original Estate Sale of Bennett Bunn

advertisement
The house we know today as “Stonewall” was built around 1830 by Bennett Bunn (d. 1849). Bennett was a
wealthy plantation owner and businessman. He was a central figure in the business and social activities of the
local area. In addition to his large land holdings, he owned many of the buildings in the little village at the
Great Falls of the Tar River which had recently become known as Rocky Mount. One such building was a
general store called Big Falls, which was operated by his nephew, Redmond Bunn (d. 1883), and Benjamin F.
Knight. Bennett had business dealings with Battle & Co. (now Rocky Mount Mills), one of the first cotton
mills in the South. It is known that he was involved in manufacturing, but the nature of the products
manufactured is uncertain. While there was a brickyard on his land during the 1830’s, it is unknown if the
bricks were made for sale. Many of these bricks were probably used in the in the construction of Stonewall
itself, several brick slave cabins, and a serpentine wall which ran from the house to the river. Redmond Bunn
was part owner in a turpentine distillery and it is likely that his Uncle Bennett was involved as well. Bennett
owned stock in the Wilmington and Raleigh Railroad. Originally planned to connect Wilmington to Raleigh,
the company decided in the late 1830’s to connect instead with Weldon, and the tracks pointed in the direction
of Petersburg, Virginia and to the industrial North. This railroad crossed much of Bennett’s land immediately
north of the Tar River.
Bennett bought and sold land continuously. He also loaned and borrowed money continuously. Almost
everyone in the area had some dealings with him, whether it was $2 of $10,000. In addition, many others listed
him as security for monies they borrowed or land that they purchased. His business affairs were complex, and
in a constant state of change. His sudden death by “chlorea morbus” at his residence May 13, 1849, not only
caused problems for his family, but also for the business community in general. Bennett died intestate, leaving
his son William Bennett Bunn (d. 1858) as sole heir to the estate, which was subject to the widow’s dower.
James J. Phillips, administrator of the estate, petitioned the court in August to sell all of Bennett’s real and
personal property to settle the debt of the estate. As a result, the sale was held on November 5th – 9th, 1849.
THE ESTATE SALE OF BENNETT BUNN (d.1849)
November 5th – 9th, 1849
Preface
A brief description of the business affairs of Bennett Bunn is offered and will provide the background for the
sale of his estate.
The inventory and account of sales were taken from the estate records of Bennett Bunn (d.1849), found in the
Nash County Records in the North Carolina Archives. As these records were transcribed from the original,
every effort was made to record items and names as accurately as possible, including misspelled words and
abbreviations. Items in parenthesis appear here as they do on the original documents. Items in brackets are
editorial and were added to assist the reader. The abbreviation & e was used in those days to mean etc. and
occurs throughout the booklet. In many cases the word ditto is spelled out, but sometimes appears as do. and “.
Illegible words were left partially or completely blank.
When reading this document readers whose ancestors lived in the Nash & Edgecombe County areas should pay
particular attention to the names of the buyers present at the sale and to names having to do with bonds. Most
of these readers will find one or more ancestors listed and perhaps might gain some small hint as to that
person’s lifestyle or interests
The Sale
Monday’s sale (Nov. 5, 1849) began at the residence now known as Stonewall with the household items being
the first things sold. As the sale progressed, it moved into the barnyard area. The household servants were also
sold this day. The children were sold with their mother and were purchased by Sally Bunn (d.1860), widow of
Bennett. Tuesday’s sale (Nov. 6) appears to have been held at the residence of William Bennett Bunn (d.1858),
Bennett’s sole heir. Items of interest include the brandy still and the railroad stock. The slaves that were sold
that Tuesday were probably William Bennett Bunn’s but this fact is not known for certain. The land that
Bennett had owned in Edgecombe County was sold Tuesday afternoon.
Wednesday’s dale (Nov. 7) began at the Little Falls Plantation and consisted primarily of livestock, corn and
cotton. Thursday’s sale (Nov. 8) was a slave sale, with most of the slaves being field hands. Three slaves stand
out as being particularly valuable and were probably blacksmiths or brick masons, etc… The sale on Friday
(Nov. 9) consists of a few more slaves, some miscellaneous items and the land located in Nash County.
The disbursements of monies from the sale are confusing and may never be fully understood. The page entitled
“Lands of Bennett Bunn” does not come from the estate records but was compiled from the deed books of Nash
and Edgecombe counties as a reference guide. It is intended to accompany the map on display at Stonewall
showing the lands of Bennett Bunn (d.1849).

Prior to the large auction, the William Bennett Bunn (d.1858) residence and surrounding 72 acres were sold at
public auction on July 23, 1849. Sally Bunn (d.1860), widow of Bennett and mother of William Bennett Bunn,
purchased the home and land for $750 [Nash Deed Book 20 84]. Newsome J. Pittman purchased one tract of 32
acres and another of 70 acres for $1334 [Nash Deed Book 20 47]. Bennett Bunn (d.1849) sold off over 800
acres lying south of the Tar River prior to his death [Nash Deed Books 18 153, 19 83, and 19 142]. He also
sold the land shown in red to his nephew, Redmun Bunn (d.1883) [Nash Deed Books 15 123 and 18 423].
Several other smaller tracts that Bennett owned are not shown.
Base Map: City of Rocky Mount Street May dated 1966. Scale: 1 inch = 500 feet.

Prior to the large auction, the William Bennett Bunn (d. 1858) residence and surrounding 72 acres were
sold at public auction on July 23, 1849. Sally Bunn (d. 1860), widow of Bennett and Mother of William
Bennett Bunn, purchased the home and land for $750 [Nash Deed Book 20-84]. Newsome J. Pittman
purchased one tract of 32 acres and another of 70 acres for $1334 [Nash Deed Book 20-47]. Bennett
Bunn (d. 1849) sold off over 800 acres lying south of the Tar River prior to his death [Nash Deed Books
18-153, 19-83, and 19-142]. He also sold the land shown in red to his nephew, Redmun Bunn (d. 1883)
[Nash Deed Book 15-123 and 18-423]. Several other smaller tracts that Bennett owned are not shown.
Base Map: City of Rocky Mount Street Map dated 1966. Scale: 1 inch = 500 feet.
