CHI Celebrating 30 years
Chattahoochee Hospice marked our 30th Anniversary
with a March 20th Luncheon, beginning a year-long celebration of the service we’ve provided to the Greater Valley Area.
We honor the vision of the founding board members who
sought to provide quality care for the terminally ill in this
community. It is the legacy of these pioneers in the hospice
field that has brought us to where we are today. These
founding board members laid the foundation of an organization based on the pledge of our mission statement. Thirty
years later, Chattahoochee Hospice still holds to the same
mission:
We pledge to provide quality programs, services and technology to meet the unique physical, emotional and spiritual
needs of the terminally ill and their families, and to educate the community about end of life issues.
The Anniversary Luncheon was held at the beautifully
decorated West Point Depot. Highlights included a walk
down memory lane with James Zachry, long time board
member. Dr. Joe Downs, CHI Medical Director, was recognized for his recent board certification in hospice and
palliative care medicine. There was also a premier of a
recent video production featuring staff and volunteers
telling the Chattahoochee Hospice story. Adrian Holloway, newly appointed Administrator, completed the
program with a resounding speech looking toward the
future of Chattahoochee Hospice.

Anniversary Highlights
Whether in the engine or the
caboose, Mark McGee and
Bill Parker, our spiritual leaders are involved in patient and
family care from admission to
Chattahoochee Hospice until
13 months following death.
It is the outstanding
support of the
community that has
allowed
Chattahoochee
Hospice to continue
through these past
30 years as the only
remaining nonprofit
hospice in this area.
Chattahoochee Hospice received an outpouring of support from the community as we kicked off our 30th
Anniversary Celebration with a luncheon at West Point Depot. CHI Staff, volunteers, board of directors,
health care partners, former employees, and the community at large joined us in commemorating the past
and looking forward to the future.

One of the highlights of the 30th Anniversary Luncheon was
seeing the familiar faces of those who have served the
community as employees, volunteers and board members of
Chattahoochee Hospice.
It was particularly special to have Larry Nix, local attorney,
who served as a member of the founding board of directors,
as well as Dr. Downs, who was also a founding board member
and has served either as medical director or board member
throughout the 30 year history of Chattahoochee Hospice.
Scott Huguley, President of
Chattahoochee Hospice board
of directors, congratulates Dr.
Joe Downs, CHI Medical
Director for recent Board
Certification in Hospice and
Palliative Care Medicine.
Also present were current board members, James Zachry, Dot
Anderson, and Ed Yeargan with more than 20 years of
service, Christine Simpson and Debra Veal with more than 15
years of service, and Scott Huguley and John Lowe with more
than 10 years of service, David Moore with 5 years of service
and more recently appointed board member, Bill Edwards.

CHI Team Raises $3,500
for Relay for Life
Chattahoochee Hospice continued its support this year
for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Once
again we had the largest delegation participating on the
evening of Relay, all gathered
for the common goal of
fighting cancer.
The Relay Event is the culmination of months of work
organizing and fundraising.
The volunteers and staff led
by Susie Fincher had a very
successful Chick-fil-A Sack
Lunch sale that resulted in
$1,500 for Relay for Life.
Surrounded by family
and CHI volunteers, Mr.
James Ramsey is shown
holding the framed certificate and handmade quilt
presented to him by CHI
volunteers through our
We Honor Veterans Program.
Mr. Ramsey shared stories
about his experiences
during his time of service
to his country. Thank
you, Mr. Ramsey!
CHI Volunteer and cancer
survivor, Syble Spears,
center, is flanked by her
biggest supporters, Bill
Spears, husband and Hilda
Jones, daughter.
Shown above are some of the volunteers, staff and board members
who began the evening with a hotdog supper under our big tent.
Other members of the Chattahoochee Hospice Team joined us as the
event continued through the night. Seated are Ruby Walker, Susie
Fincher, Syble Spears, Katie Walton, and Margaret Bartlett. Standing
are Cynthia Holloway, Janice Dallas, Mike Jones, Hazel Woods, Bill
Edwards, Dean Chapman, Charles Chapman, Adrian Holloway,
Martha Shipman, Bill Spears, Dee Black, Minnie Holloway, Mark
McGee and Terrell Johnson.
The volunteer quilters raised over $1,100 for Relay by hand
piecing and quilting commemorative quilt squares. Each
square was made using the color designated for that particular cancer and embroidered with the person’s name. Squares
may be purchased in honor or in memory
of a loved one. Showing off some of their
squares are CHI volunteer quilters Dean
Chapman, Johnnie Dozier (embroidery
specialist), Alice Faye Ray, and Syble
Spears, project chairperson.

Chattahoochee Hospice
Nonprofit Service ~
What does our nonprofit status really mean?
What values do we hold as a nonprofit organization? How does this set us apart?
These values include dedication to our
profession, compassion for our patients, and delivering excellence with
integrity, all while considering what is
best for our patients and their families. Reflecting on this set of core
values, we see they are all united by an
underlying desire to serve.
Jeffunda King, a Chattahoochee Hospice case manager, speaking to the
values of integrity and compassion she
brings to the excellent service she provides her patients, said
“Serving at Chattahoochee Hospice allows me
the time to bond and
build a rapport with our
patients and their families. Usually the patients and families
are very grateful for just having you
there to sit quietly and listen to them.”
Another case manager, Karmen
Leavins adds,” It is a
wonderful experience to
be allowed into a patient’s or family’s personal setting and experience this journey with
them. I am so honored
to be part of a team and organization
that can provide peace, comfort and
dignity at a very difficult time within a
family.”
People serve for a variety of reasons,
but mainly we serve because we want
to. Perhaps a family member’s experi-
ence made an impact. Brooke Bryson
Sheheane, Clinical Coordinator recalls,
“My family was blessed to
have Chattahoochee Hospice in our lives taking
care of my grandmother
and we are thankful for
that to this day.” Some
people may serve simply
due to a belief that the reason we are put
on earth is to serve others from a source
of love and compassion. Volunteer Coordinator, Hilda Jones states, “I am honored to have the privilege of working
with volunteers who devote their time, energies
and talents as we, together
with the rest of the Chattahoochee Hospice Team,
serve those who are facing
the end of their lives.”
Many of you reading this
are currently serving others in a variety
of capacities as healthcare clinicians, as
volunteers on the front lines, and as donors whose generosity provides the
foundation for service.
The rewards are great when people serve
from the heart. Patients see the physical
results of the clinical treatment, but the
spiritual and emotional value they receive are just as important. Djuna
“Dee” Black, long-time Chattahoochee
Hospice case manager and now serving
as QAPI Coordinator emphasizes,
“Hospice is a ministry to me. Being
there with patients and
their families during the
most difficult times and
providing patients not
only physical, mental and emotional
support but spiritual support, as well,
is so fulfilling. Being part of this end
of life transition gives me a sense of
worth. Hospice nursing is my passion!”
Serving from a deeper source results in
changes in patients as well as families
and caregivers. “When I enter a patient’s home, I try to be very in-themoment,” says case manager, Carla
Mooney. “I stop and
sincerely listen and
make genuine eye
contact along with
showing compassion
for the patient’s suffering.” These types
of authentic actions
can transform a patient’s negative state
of mind into one of insight.
It is this approach to service that
makes Chattahoochee Hospice unique
among hospice providers. We are motivated by our dedication to serving the
community. As a nonprofit, one of
the ways we serve is to take on lessprofitable cases to help our community. We deliver services where gaps
exist. As pointed out by Mark McGee,
Chaplain, Bereavement and Community Education Coordinator, “Decisions
on care aren’t made in a boardroom in
some other state and
we don’t answer to
stockholders. Our focus is at the patient’s
bedside, period. One
has to experience the
difference to under-

stand how big that is.” Jeffunda King
states, “I have truly witnessed CHI go
above and beyond when it comes to
patient care. We accept all patients that
meet hospice criteria regardless of their
ability or inability to pay.”
Our values are at the heart of our organization, which adds value to our
partners, our patients and to the community. Adrian Holloway, Administrator, sees the rewards of providing
healthcare in a nonprofit environment.
“I want the emphasis to be on patient
care not quotas.” Adrian
expressed the freedom
she feels when the profit
motive is removed. “l
love that I am working
for a nonprofit organization when providing for
our patients’ needs. This type of organization truly allows me to put our
patients first and properly serve them
without always being focused on the
finances of the organization.”
Nonprofit service… that’s what sets us
apart!
“The healthcare industry
continues to change and
most agencies look at the
bottom line and forget about
the service to the individual.
But the level of service you
provide continues to be at
the top of the scale.”
...from family served by CHI
Staff Survey: What separates
Chattahoochee Hospice from
other Hospices?
“Simply put, our TEAM. There is a reason our agency has been in existence
for 30 years. You will not find a more qualified, compassionate, friendly
group of people. None of us are in this for the paycheck, we love what we
do and it shows. Our time and energy is spent on taking care of the patients
and families we serve.”
...Kelly Morris, LBSW
“I can’t speak for other hospices but I know from five years of experience
that for everyone who works at CHI it is more than a job and a pay-check.
It’s ‘let’s make a difference in somebody’s life today’.”
...Bill Parker, Chaplain
“CHI is a local nonprofit hospice, serving the community for 30 years. We
serve everyone regardless of their ability to pay. It is our way of giving back
to our community and our neighbors and investing in the lives and families
of those we know and love. It is a privilege, not just a job.”
...Iris Adams, Reimbursement Coordinator
“This team is designed by God. We are one body working together for the
betterment of our community. Our goal is to give the absolute ‘best’ care
possible. We want our patients and families to feel that they are top priority.
We are 100% there to make them feel comfortable.”
...Djuna Black, RN
“I have never worked for an organization like Chattahoochee Hospice.
Teamwork is truly practiced here. Every discipline is respected and valued.
Everyone has something to offer! We are able to provide holistic care of the
patient and family.”
...Karmen Leavins, RN, BSN
“After working for another hospice, I find what separates CHI from other
hospices is that we are not for profit. I have truly witnessed CHI go above
and beyond when it comes to patient care.”
...Jeffunda King, RN, BSN
“Chattahoochee Hospice takes care of people in our community. We are
your neighbors and have a great sense of dedication to this area. We spend
our time and money at the patient’s bedside. We care for the whole individual, not just their illness.”
...Brooke Bryson, RN

30th Anniversar y DVD
The theme for this year’s
Volunteer Appreciation
Banquet was CHI Team:
Volunteers and Staff in Perfect
Harmony. What better way to
exemplify this harmony than
by honoring Dr. Charles and
Mrs. Ruth Otto. Dr. Otto has
been a volunteer for 24 years
and Mrs. Ruth is not far behind with 20 years, with much of that
service being done as a team. The Ottos have been visiting
patients and participating in almost every facet of our volunteer
program throughout their combined 44 years of service. To
further carry out
the Teamwork/
Harmony theme, the
Point University
Barbershop
Quartet entertained
and staff and
volunteers at the
Banquet.

In celebration of our 30th Anniversary, Chattahoochee
Hospice Staff and Volunteers have produced a DVD to
help tell our story. This DVD which features the personal
stories of staff, volunteers and families served by Chattahoochee Hospice, is available to be used by churches,
clubs and other organizations who would like the opportunity to educate their members about Hospice Care. One
of our staff members would be happy to speak to your
group and show the DVD. If you are interested, please
contact our office to set up a presentation.
Sequestration Puts Programs at Risk
Federal Budget cuts Require Planning for Uncertainty
Congress failed to reach a budget deal and
sequestration went into effect, imposing across the
board budget cuts to federal programs. As of April 1,
2013, healthcare providers, including Chattahoochee
Hospice, had their Medicare reimbursement cut by
two percent.
Debate continues about the impact these cuts will
have on patient care. The impact will only be evident
as time unfolds, but the uncertainty surrounding the
extent of the Medicare reimbursement cuts are putting
further strain on the services that Chattahoochee
Hospice provides.
We are currently planning for the impact of
sequestration on the programs that we offer our
patients and the community. Doing so will require
increased support from our community to allow us to
provide the care our patients need, regardless of their
ability to pay.
