SHIRLEY SCHULTZ Director of Consulting Services for Provenir Shirley has been a member of SAHRMA since 2006. According to Shirley, her professional career has been "non-traditional". After completing two years of college majoring in English, Shirley suspended her professional career to be a professional mother. After 10 years of nurturing her 2 children, she decided to return to work. Shirley summed up her HR career and relationship with SAHRMA with these thoughts: Shirley Schultz "During those years I could not have survived without SAHRMA. Not having a background in Human Resources, I relied on SAHRMA and SHRM for anything and everything I needed. I joined both organizations and utilized all the resources available to me to develop a recruiting program, write a handbook, and create an evaluation system, an onboarding program, a mentoring program and a compensation system. The most important and sustaining values are the networking and sharing of knowledge that I gained from attending SAHRMA events. I have made many lasting friendships throughout the years and those friendships are the people that I brainstorm with on issues. SAHRMA has been so important to my continued career as a consultant and mentor that I have chosen to participate on several committees throughout the years to give back because I received so much. But you need to approach the hiring process holistically - retaining employees can be more difficult than recruitment. This is especially true for companies in less diverse regions where relocated minority employees may feel disconnected. You may need to take a more active role in helping them adjust to the culture at work as well as in their new communities. First, identify what your needs are. Does your workforce resemble the communities that you operate in? Do they match the demographic that you serve or want to serve? If not, develop a hiring strategy to increase workforce diversity. Nearly 2 out of 3 workers age 45-74 have caregiving responsibilities for an aging or other adult relative.* Working family caregivers have increased stress, more missed work and lower productivity rates. Companies pay 8 percent more in health care costs for workers with caregiving responsibility vs. those with none. This costs employers about $2,100 per employee for U.S. companies. Most of these employees face their caregiving role unprepared, not knowing what resources are available. The Alamo Caregiver Support Coalition is a coalition of business partners who came together to formulate communitybased support and training for caregivers. The ACSC can help these employees by: providing no cost on-site educational programs, presenting inservice training, identifying community resources and information, and sharing useful caregiver resources. Arming caregivers with these tools will improve their productivity, morale and attendance, in turn boosting the company's bottom line. For more information on how the ACSC can help a company and its employees, email the ACSC at cgcoalition@acewings.org The Alamo Caregiver Support Coalition is a sub-committee of the Bexar Senior Advisory Committee, Bexar and Alamo Area Agencies on Aging, AACOG.
