We value not only the individual person, but also the possibilities of expression, creativity, connection, and growth that can arise out of an unconditional, trusting, and mutually inspiring relationship between everyone involved: participants, staff, teachers, and business partners alike. To better accommodate the evolving needs of our participants, our classes are tiered into three levels. Level I - Participants receive a high level of staff assistance and prompting while in t he class. The material covered in the class is very basic. Level 2 - Participants receive moderate assistance in the class but often can partici pate with few staff prompts. Level 3 - Participants are able to participate fairly independently in the class and re quire less assistance in engaging. The class is striving to improve the skill level of each participant so that he/she can become more independent in the s ubject. 2 Class Venues & Community Outing Locations • BOULDER FACILITY—5421 Western Ave., Boulder, CO 303.817.4437 C.O.R.E./Labor Source maintains offices, classrooms, and computer/technology labs in this Boulder location. C.O.R.E./Labor Source is also committed to utilizing a variety of other community resources and venues as part of its mission of broad community involvement and diversity awareness. • LONGMONT FACILITY - 1860 Industrial Circle, Longmont CO 303.776.2388 We are excited to announce that C.O.R.E./Labor Source has opened a new facility in Longmont. This facility serves as a central office for the coordination of all Longmont C.O.R.E./Labor Source activities. Classes and activities will continue to take place in integrated community settings, as well as at the new facility. Community Outing locations will vary from class to class and site to site. The Integrated Community Participation (ICP’s) classes are split by level, so that class content is appropriate to its participants. During community outings, participants will engage with their community with guidance from C.O.R.E. counselors. The location for the class is determined by staff with input from participants or previous knowledge of client likes/ dislikes. Our ICP’s generally find us at a local city park, retail venue, museum or art gallery, or other facilities that offer education and outreach. 3 Art A d ap t ive A r t / M i xe d M e d i a The purpose of this class is to build relationship and community through the exploration and discovery of our creative potential. Through individual and collaborative processes between participant and staff, we will build a trusting, dynamic environment where artistic expression and possibilities are explored and celebrated. The relationship between teacher and student, staff and participant allows each person to feel inspired, challenged and included in the making of art. Projects include painting, drawing, sculpture, mixed media, and crafts. Teacher: Aliza Lelah Artwork by Leah Walters Art At Work: Becoming Artisans In this class we will be learning new skills and creating pieces from our work together that we can enjoy and use. Individual classes will build upon each other and expand into new projects, new mediums and finished, polished pieces ready to sell or use. We will work towards building a relationship with our skills as artisans as a means to integrating our craft into creative career potential. Mediums and projects will include working with ceramic tile, painting with glazes, sculpture, pottery, decorating with colored glass, and paper making. We will create such items as hanging paper bell lanterns, cards and envelopes, soap wood frames, batik wall hangings, as well as other fascinating and creative projects. We will focus on both individual and group projects, and will incorporate guest artists to share their specific expertise and experience. Teacher: Aliza Lelah 4 Art Photography Class The Photography class is designed to teach and practice techniques that can be used by the participants to improve their photographic skills and their enjoyment of photography. This will begin with a discussion, and then move to hands-on practice of each method. These techniques will initially focus on composition, but may also expand to include other methods that the participants may show an aptitude for. In addition to the use of a digital camera, the participants will also learn how to use a computer for storage, editing, and printing photos. Photos produced by participants in the class may be used for various CORE/LS publications such as catalogs, newsletters, posters, etc. Teacher: Brian Shaw 5 Music Jam Session Adaptive Orchestra The purpose of these music classes is to create new avenues of expression and artistic development, develop the student’s knowledge of music, play and sing music and explore musical improvisation, learn about instruments and music from other cultures, and use the device of repetition in music to help develop short-term memory. Participants will work with each other and the instructor in an intimate setting with a variety of musical devices, adaptive technology and instruments based upon their individual interest, passion, and talent. The teacher will introduce new technology to further develop and explore the interests and abilities. Jam Session provides participants the opportunity to learn how to play a musical instrument. The teacher provides one-on-one attention to each client as they learn new techniques. Students are encouraged to provide support and motivation for their peers during this process. Teacher: Greg Harris Musicology Learn about different types of music from all over the globe! Musicology is a place to study and talk about your favorite kinds of music, and you might learn about music you'd never heard of! We'll study everything from Pop and Hip-Hop to Opera and Orchestra. We'll discuss instruments, writers, composers, and performers while listening to samples of the 'music of the day'. You might discover that you love a type of music you'd never dreamed of enjoying. 6 Dance/Movement Dance & Movement In this improvisational dance class participants get the opportunity to engage in a fun, creative, and physical environment with their peers. Facilitated improvisational exercises allow for exploring range of motion, problem solving, spontaneity, follow through, and listening skills. Working by themselves, in partnership, and in small groups, participants investigate all the possibilities of their own movement potential. Staff will tailor the movement exercises for each individual, allowing for a widerange of possibility and success. Teacher: Andrea Bullard Take the Stage! Our theatre class offers participants a wide variety of theatrical acting games and activities designed to inspire creativity, cooperation and confidence in a real theatre setting. Classes help participants develop their own creative expression through physical performance, emphasizing awareness of body language, vocal and other forms of expression, and imagination, in a lively and playful Yoga environment. Each class will invite This Yoga class is designed for people cultural connection, inspiration, of all physical abilities to experience confidence, enrichment, education, and enjoy the basic techniques of yoga community involvement, collaborative relationship and including proper breathing, enjoyment. We will engage various alignment, and poses for strength, elements of theatre and performance, flexibility, and relaxation. Traditional and eventually work towards a group yoga poses will be modified for all public performance. Teacher: physical abilities. Some benefits of Andrea Bullard yoga include: increased cognition, increased body awareness and coordination, improved balance, increased flexibility and strength, diminished fatigue, improved circulation and breathing, stressreduction, and an overall feeling of well-being. Teacher: Andrea Bullard 7 Education Computer Lab Growing Gardens GROWING GARDENS’ VISION & MISSION: *We envision inspired people joining together to actively replenish their environment, their community and themselves. We believe in the power of people to co-create harmony between land, water and all living things for generations to come. *Growing Gardens’ mission is to enrich the lives of Boulder County residents through environmentally sustainable gardening programs that empower people to experience a direct and deep connection with plants, the land and each other. Teacher: Growing Gardens Staff The computer learning class will take place in the base site computer lab where participants will become familiar with basic computer skills such as typing, using educational software and accessing the internet. The class will be taught in an intimate setting so the teacher can tailor the learning to individual client needs. Teacher: Brian Shaw/Kristi Whiting Reading & Writing The purpose of this class is to encourage students to take delight in literature, to develop confidence in their own language skills and to develop a lifetime relationship with reading and writing. The teacher will assist students in identifying and expanding emergent skills, such as sight word recognition, phonemic awareness, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and numeracy. 8 Education Cooking Class The cooking class will begin with participants learning basic knowledge of the kitchen, such as measurements, safety skills, and appropriate use of kitchen equipment. Participants will then be assisted in following recipes and creating simple dishes that they will Community Navigation Book Club Book Club- Enjoy spending time with other participants and your favorite book! We gather at a local library or bookstore and read popular books. This class helps participants hone their reading and comprehension skills. It is also a valuable tool in building friendships. Journalism Journalism/Creative Writing- Help us put together the C.O.R.E./Labor Source newsletter! We discuss writing techniques, proper grammar and spelling, and effective ways of catching the reader's attention. The first half of the class is spent searching newspapers and the Internet for important current events of the day and week. The second half is used to work on news articles. For creative writing, we work together as a class to write poetry, prose, and short stories. Different writing techniques are taught and discussed. This is an opportunity for participants to let their imaginations lead them! This class will assist participants in obtaining skills necessary for global navigation (getting around in their communities). Participants will practice using public transportation, making a daily schedule for community access, and community safety skills. The class will be offered at the base site during skill introduction, and will be practiced in the community with supervision during skill acquisition. This class will include a community integrated skills scavenger hunt. Teachers: Brian Shaw 9 Education Explorability Explorability is designed to provide an environment to encourage and support the exploration of the individual. Both staff and participants will be encouraged to learn about themselves by uncovering, celebrating, and expanding their unique abilities. There is a strong focus on individualized skill development in the arenas of physical, sensorimotor, cognitive and socio-emotional skills such as bilateral integration, crossing midline, problem-solving and functional communication. Each individual is met at their particular skill level and supported in their personal growth whether that be increasing eye contact, learning how to ask for something politely, or learning a specific dance step. Themes vary per quarter. All classes include Brain Gym activities and Laughter Club. Please come join us for Laughter Club 11-11:30 AM at the end of Explorability class! Sensory Exploration Experience/ Sensory Lab Sensory Exploration Experience is focused on exploring the sensations of various themes varying from week to week. Possible themes include Animals, Sensory Scavenger Hunt, Ocean, Sci Fi, and Let’s Go Camping. Facilitators encourage a slow, subtle approach to more deeply recognizing and embracing the sights, sounds, textures, smells and sometimes tastes of these experiences. (Everybody loves ‘Smores day!) Sensory Lab is a focused 30 minute intensive spent 1-on-1 with Betsy Janowak, OTR designed to discover specific sensory-oriented approaches that will aid in the participant’s ability to engage in other C.O.R.E./Labor Source activities, the community and their homes. There is a strong emphasis on self-regulation and increasing independence in expressing and accessing favorite sensory activities. 10 Fitness / Connections Guys Group Guys Group is a structured outing designed to create a social environment that is as close as possible to what a group of guys would do together on their free time. The group will often discuss and decide together what the future outings will be. Activities include playing catch with a football, playing basketball, swimming, disc golf, outings to the Rocky Mountain National Park and Red Rocks, eating lunch out, going to the 16th street mall in Denver, bowling, trips to Boulder, and other activities. This class does not have the feeling of a "class" and some of our goals include fostering normal social interactions in a leisure setting. Sensory Garden Sensory Garden is an educational class where the participants learn about various aspects of a garden through multiple sensory experiences. These include hearing interesting and educational facts being talked about, as well as having the opportunity to learn about the subject by touch, smell, taste, and sight. This class occurs in a community garden setting as much as weather allows. Open Gym Participants will enjoy a trip to the Longmont Recreation Center to attend Open Gym. Activities include indoor track walking, treadmills, stationary bikes and other fitness equipment, as well as basketball. Participants of varying skill levels are all welcome; all activities are supervised by C.O.R.E. staff. Teachers: C.O.R.E./Labor Source Staff Bowling All abilities are welcome; bumpers BOULDER/LAFAYETTE Tuesday 10:00-11:30 Thursday 12:30-2:30 Lafayette Coal Creek Lanes LONGMONT Thursday 12:30-2:30 Centennial Lanes and ramps are available. Swimming We offer several swimming outings of different abilities at community pools in both Longmont and Boulder. Level one swimming utilizes life vests and “noodles” to ensure safety while staff encourage movement in the water for general physical health and wellness. Level three swimming takes place at local recreation centers. Participants are able to exercise, utilize the water park, and 11 Communication Communication Lab I The purpose of the Communication Lab is to help participants learn ways to communicate their needs, wants, ideas, and thoughts through a variety of options. Sign language, PECS (picture exchange communication system), facial expressions, gestures and AAC (Alternate and Augmentative Communication) devices are all explored through this class. Teacher: Kristi Whiting Communication Lab II The level two Communication Lab is designed for individuals who have the basic ability to communicate and are looking to improve their social communication skills. The class focuses on social appropriateness as well as the importance of enunciation, volume, and tone when speaking to others. Strategies include discussions on appropriate conversational topics along with turn-taking, role playing, modeling, and using social stories to sequence daily living skills. Teacher: Kristi Whiting Sign Language This class is taught by American Sign Language (ASL) professionals. The focus of the class is basic sign skills, which will give participants the tools necessary for simple signed communication. Teacher: Isa Purser 12 Senior Activities Education Program Coffee and Current Events At the Longmont Senior Center Taking place in the morning, program participants are transported to the Longmont Senior Center to review the day’s headlines. Following their discussion, the group joins their community for a hot lunch. A recent addition to the class offerings has been the Senior Program. This program tailors its classes and activities to participants 55 and older. The Senior Program keeps its participants active in the community, with classes such as reading at the Longmont Library, bingo, lunch at the Longmont Senior Center, games and crafts at the ACL, and a Friday morning volunteer project. The Senior Program also keeps its participants comfortably active through adaptive exercises like chair yoga. Chair Yoga This class offers basic yoga poses in a comfortable seated position. The movements are designed to maintain the client’s range of motion and ease of movement. The teacher focuses on individual comfort, ability and relaxation. Teacher: Andrea Bullard Bowling Once during the week, the Senior Program heads to Centennial Lanes in Longmont for a round or two of bowling and lunch. Participants can choose to bowl (ball ramps are provided by the bowling alley) or people watch, whichever the choice it’s a great way for participants to interact with their community. 13 Community Community Outings The mission of Integrated Community Participation is to provide ongoing, varied, and engaging opportunities for participants to utilize and experience the community as a learning environment, and to facilitate and build relationships and natural supports within a wide variety of community settings. Staff will accompany participants to and from various community settings that have been scheduled and approved as appropriate, safe, and accessible locations. Once at the sites, staff will engage and assist participants in whatever way necessary to facilitate maximum engagement, education, and relationship opportunities within the community. 14 Senior Program Supported Education Employment Since its inception in 1984, C.O.R.E./ Labor Source’s Supported Employment Program has been providing innovative employment opportunities to people with developmental disabilities. We are passionate about the value of work in helping people realize their full potential, enhance their self-esteem, and become active, contributing members of their society. We strongly believe that community, integrated employment should be an option for everyone who wants to work. We provide a wide variety of vocational services including: Career Exploration and Situational Assessment: Services designed to help individuals discern what type of employment meets their vocational desires and abilities. Additionally, assessments are conducted to evaluate an individual’s work behaviors, interpersonal skills and job related skill levels. .Work Adjustment Training: Training designed to facilitate an individual’s smooth transition into the work place. This training focuses on peer work relationships, supervisory work relationships, general work behaviors and job expectations. Job Development and Placement: Services to help an individual obtain suitable, stable and satisfactory employment in an integrated setting which is consistent with the individual’s strengths, interests, abilities, and informed choice. We provide both group and independent placement services contingent upon an individual’s needs and desires. We currently have individuals working at over 30 businesses in the community. Job Coaching: Vocational training pertaining to a specific job site after placement occurs. Job coaching includes job skill training, job site orientation, and the provision of necessary supports to ensure employment stability. Job Seeking Skills Training: Training to teach individuals how to conduct job searches, prepare resumes, complete applications, and interview effectively. Follow Along Services: For individuals who are working independently in the community, we provide indefinite supports as needed to ensure the individual’s ongoing success and the employer’s satisfaction. Personal Adjustment Training: Instruction provided to help individuals develop the compensatory skills necessary to succeed at work in the areas of independent living, communications, personal mobility and the ability to travel in the community. We are proud of our vibrant partnership with the Colorado Division of Vocational Rehabilitation in it’s commitment to provide the highest quality of supported employment services 15 Senior Program Volunteer Education Activities We offer participants an opportunity to develop work related skills and develop relationships with community members while they are giving back to the community. Volunteer opportunities availableHeart and Soul Ranch: Heart and Soul Ranch is a horse boarding and therapeutic riding facility located on Nelson road in Longmont. Participants complete a variety of tasks while at the ranch; offering companionship to horses, donkeys and barn cats, grooming, cleaning up the barn, gardening (in the warmer months), filling grain, and cleaning equipment.* a liability waiver is required to volunteer * Longmont Humane Society: The Longmont Humane Society is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to the protection and care of animals. Participants offer companionship to shelter dogs and cats by socializing with them and taking them on walks around the Humane Society property. .YMCA preschool and First Lutheran Church: The Longmont YMCA preschool is located within the First Lutheran Church in Longmont ,Colorado. Participants volunteer their services and help out the YMCA preschool and the Lutheran Church by completing a variety of tasks that include; classroom needs, classroom clean-up, class and material preparation, playground upkeep, bulletin boards, folding newsletters, gardening, etc. Community Food Share: Community Food Share is a local organization that collects food and monetary donations from local grocery stores and community members to provide a nurturing meal to families in need. Participants sort daily donations of produce, bakery, dairy, canned goods and/or frozen meals so that they can be donated to families in need throughout Boulder and Broomfield counties. Abbondanza Pizzaria: Participants volunteer at this local pizzeria and wipe down menus, fill cheese and peppers shakers, and a variety of tasks as needed. 16 Teacher Bios Andrea Bullard (Dance & Movement/Theatre/Yoga) Andrea received her MA from Naropa University, in Dance/Movement Therapy. Before completing her graduate studies, she attended NYU, where she received her BFA in Theatre, with the Experimental Theatre Wing. Throughout her life Andrea has trained in various dance and movement forms, including Ballet, Modern, Post Modern and various contemplative forms. Andrea strives to encourage creative play and embodied experience in her classes with C.O.R.E./Labor Source Aliza Lelah (Art) Aliza is a professional working artist who graduated with an MFA in Painting from Savannah College of Art and Design. She has been involved in various non-profit art organizations and is a passionate educator in the field of art. In her own art Aliza works with bits and pieces of recycled fabric, stitching it together to create various imagery influenced from memory and nostalgia. Aliza believes everyone can be an artist and works hard at finding what inspires each individual. Kristi Whiting (Communication Lab) Kristi is a graduate from Portland State University with a B.A in Speech and Hearing Science. She is a licensed Speech Language Pathologist Assistant and has been with Imagine! since 2008. She teaches full time at both Longmont and Boulder locations and works directly with a certified Speech Language Pathologist. Her goals for the communication classes are to give each consumer the tools they need to be successful at communicating their needs and to support each individual by giving them a chance to find their voice, because everyone has something to say! 17 Teacher Bios Betsy Janowak (Explorability) Betsy is a registered occupational therapist who graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has been working with Imagine! since 2001. She currently runs a host home, has a Rolfing Structural Integration practice and is co-founder of The Community Project, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to providing multimedia arts opportunities for all people. Her focus with her workshops and classes is to encourage all people to challenge themselves to experience their personal potentials through purposeful activities whether that be through artistic expression, projects, games, dance/ movement or a sense of productivity. Betsy believes in the occupational therapy notion that there is an intrinsic human need to explore and act on the environment. Isa Purser (Sign Language) Isa was born deaf and grew up using sign exact English (S.E.E.). She had difficulty with S.E.E. and couldn’t understand it because it was not a visual language, like American Sign Language (A.S.L.). After graduating from High School, she met friends who signed A.S.L and was so excited to discover that she could finally understand what they were talking about! A.S.L. is a visual language that involves full body language, and is exciting and fun to learn! Brian Shaw (Photography Class/Computers) Brian currently works as a counselor with C.O.R.E./Labor Source His photography experience includes managing a photo lab for Kodak, studying with the New York Institute of Photography, assisting with teaching photography classes at the ACL, and doing various freelance jobs in his spare time. Currently, Brian’s favorite subject to photograph is live music performances. Greg Harris (Music) Greg has a Music Education and Music Performance Bachelor of Arts degree from Fort Lewis college and has also received his M.M. in Music Performance, Percussion, at the University of Colorado. Greg is a private instructor and freelance musician in the Denver/Boulder area. Greg leads his own “Vibe Quintet”, and is a member of Bluegrass legend “Pete Wernick’s Flexigrass”, the hip-hop/jazz/soul group “Future Jazz Project” and “After Midnight Jazz Band”.
