Transformative Learning:
From Theory to Practice
DO YOU WANT TO start your career at a multinational corporation or an emerging
business? Or perhaps you want to launch yourself as an entrepreneur? Whitman can get
you there. Choose from or combine programs in accounting; entrepreneurship; finance;
management; marketing, retail, or supply chain management; and real estate, as well as
dual degree programs with information studies or public communications.
Your professional education will start your first year. The Perspectives of Business
and Management Course will introduce you to essential management skills and the
challenges business leaders face. In your sophomore year, you’ll go more in depth into
management with core courses and your major’s specific requirements.
Arts and sciences courses are also built into your first year in order to broaden
your intellectual and cultural perspectives. Outside the classroom, you’ll get hands-on
experiences in internships and work opportunities. Consult with Guatemalan craftswomen
on how to market their artistry. Collaborate with emerging entrepreneurs on Syracuse’s
South Side. Learn from, and empower entrepreneurs around the world. Or trade oil futures
during the NYMEX Commodities Challenge in New York City.

Accounting
With an accounting degree, you can take part in almost every facet of business. You’ll
be providing and interpreting the information needed by decision makers, investors,
and other corporate stakeholders. Your coursework will give you a full view of the various
functions of accounting: financial and managerial accounting, auditing, and taxation.
To be licensed as a certified public accountant (C.P.A.) in New York State, you must
complete 150 hours of education. You can meet the requirement by completing a one-year
M.S. degree program or by taking additional classes as necessary beyond the educational
requirements of the 121-hour professional program in accounting. Your advisor can
discuss with you the educational requirements for other states.
As a Whitman accounting graduate, you’ll be in high demand by major public
accounting firms, corporations, government agencies, and not-for-profit organizations.
In recent years, more than half of SU accounting graduates accepted employment with
Big Four and other major C.P.A. firms—before graduation.
WHITMAN STUDENTS regularly engage in
community service activities, including making baby
blankets for the new Golisano Children’s Hospital in
Syracuse. This was a cooperative project of Beta Alpha
Psi, Whitman’s organization for accounting and finance
students, and recruiters from Deloitte.

Entrepreneurship and
Emerging Enterprises
Do you have a big idea for a new business? Get the knowledge and skills you’ll need to
nurture a start-up company with a degree in entrepreneurship and emerging enterprises.
You’ll also be ready to manage a family business, revitalize an established business, or
shepherd hybrid organizations—alliances, joint ventures, partnerships, and “virtual
corporations”—that blend both start-up and established businesses.
Topics covered in the curriculum include the entrepreneurial mind, opportunity
identification and verification, financing, venture planning, managing family and closely
held enterprises, venture capital, legal issues facing entrepreneurs, and creating an
entrepreneurial culture.
Outside the classroom, you can launch a business in Whitman’s Couri Hatchery,
compete for the $25,000 top prize in our annual Panasci Business Plan Competition,
or participate in the D’Aniello Entrepreneurship Internship Program.
BRAND-YOURSELF, a company started by a group
of SU students in the Falcone Entrepreneurship
Center’s Couri Hatchery at the Whitman School, won
$200,000 in New York’s Creative Core Emerging
Business Competition. The company helps individuals
manage their online reputation.

Finance
As a finance major you’ll study in depth our society’s complex economic system. Start
with courses in financial management, investments, and corporate finance. Then
explore such specialties as financial accounting, cost analysis, statistical methods for
accounting and auditing, and world business systems.
You’ll get an overall understanding of business operations, with a strong background
in both micro- and macroeconomics. Along with gaining a theoretical background,
you’ll also build advanced computer skills, an expertise in mathematics, and a strong
understanding of world affairs.
Outside the classroom, you will learn from the vast resources in our Ballentine
Investment Center—12 Bloomberg terminals, video conferencing with executives, trips
to New York City, our Student Investment Club, and our select $1.2 million Orange
Value Fund.
You’ll be prepared for careers in commercial, savings, or investment banking;
brokerage houses or the stock exchange; investment consulting firms; or the financial
departments of commercial or industrial businesses.
THROUGH THE BALLENTINE Investment Center,
students receive Bloomberg training, use the latest
technology, and videoconference with such finance
executives as Daniel D’Aniello ’68, founding partner
and managing director of The Carlyle Group, one of
the largest private equity firms in the world.

Management
Leaders who have the skills to create a cohesive team can build successful organizations.
As a management major, you’ll take courses in personnel and organizational behavior,
strategic management, and legal matters that will prepare you to guide organizations
and the people within them.
With the evolution of the global marketplace, you’ll want to stay ahead of the
competition. You’ll learn how to think strategically while adapting to new business
practices, become adept in using the relevant technologies, and figure out the most
efficient processes for your organization’s people. You’ll also find further opportunities
to understand the business world with industry internships, involvement in student
organizations, and field trips. Through our Goodman Leadership Center, Whitman
students have special opportunities to learn and practice essential leadership skills
throughout their educational experiences at SU. You can take part in situational and
role-related techniques and tools, and the skills you develop will help you clarify your
career path.
GLOBALIZATION is a key part of management
today, and international study is a popular choice for
Whitman students. SU Abroad offers semester options
in Beijing, Madrid, London, Hong Kong, and Istanbul,
and summer and short-term programs in many other
locations.

Marketing Management
At Whitman, you’ll encounter the essential challenges of marketing: how a company
decides what to sell, which customers and markets to target, and the best means
of reaching them. Your coursework will include marketing research, marketing
communications, and global marketing strategy.
You’ll work in project teams—just as professionals do—to develop products,
determine pricing, and set up promotions. You’ll learn how to respond to the demands
of competitors, the government, and social and economic conditions. And then figure
out where you want your career to go with such real-world experiences as the annual
Marketing Career Exploration trip to New York City, which includes visits to Apple,
Turner Broadcasting, News Corporation, Macy’s, and Toys R Us.
As a graduate, you’ll be prepared for a career in advertising and promotion
management, business-to-business marketing, consulting, marketing management,
marketing research, new product development, product and brand management,
and retailing.
THROUGH THE ANNUAL Marketing Career
Exploration trip to New York City, Whitman students
visit and meet with a variety of employers, such as
PepsiCo, where they were hosted by alumnus Hugh F.
Johnston ’83, chief financial officer of PepsiCo.

Real Estate
With a growing need for the analysis of real estate decisions, development, and
investments, you’ll be in high demand with a major in real estate. You’ll get an
understanding of real estate fundamentals, and learn to examine real estate financial
information from diverse and conflicting sources. Your coursework will include such
topics as the development process, finance and investment, and capital markets. Mix in
related programs at SU, including architecture, law, and urban economics.
You’ll interact with real estate professionals through organized speakers visits,
field trips, and courses co-taught by professors and industry executives. Discover even
more about the business through the annual case studies class offered in New York City
and the annual Real Estate Symposium to discuss the latest trends. You’ll graduate
with an understanding of the economic and environmental impact of real estate, and
be prepared for positions throughout the world.
Through the James D. Kuhn Real Estate Center, you will benefit from the expertise
of the accomplished Retail Advisory Board, Argus training, and the many activities of
our Real Estate Club.
“I LEARNED SO MUCH FROM the guest
speakers during the real estate course in New York
City, and it was a great opportunity to network with
professionals.”

Retail Management
You’ll be in good company with a retail management degree from Whitman. Our
program is nationally known for its unique relationship with the retail industry,
particularly companies located in New York City. In fact, 99 percent of retail
management students find internships and employment opportunities with industry
giants that include Macy’s, JCPenney, Ross Stores, and TJX Companies.
The retail management program will prepare you for a career as a buyer, store
manager, apparel product developer, or sales/marketing representative. You’ll learn
how to determine how a product gets through the store distribution channels,
where consumers spend their money, and how retailers/manufacturers can influence
those spending patterns. As part of your studies, you’ll complete a required full-time
supervised internship. You may also work with local organizations and student groups
to gain additional field experience.
Students also enjoy support and guidance from Whitman’s high-profile
Retail Advisory Board, whose membership includes senior executives from Macy’s,
Bloomingdale’s, Ross Stores, Kohl’s, TJX, Apple, Lord & Taylor, and New York
& Company.
THROUGH THE SIFE club at Whitman, students
travel to Guatemala and work with craftswomen to
produce marketable products that are sold in the SU
Bookstore. On a recent trip, Whitman students helped
to build and stock a threads store and taught the
women how to manage the store.

Supply Chain Management
In the global marketplace, the efficient movement of goods and services requires
strategic thinking and an understanding of the intricacies of the supply chain. You’ll
develop both as a supply chain management student.
Supply chain management requires a distinctive view of business: procurement,
manufacturing, and distribution must be viewed and controlled as a seamless flow. You’ll
study logistics, inventory control, risk-sharing, supply-chain planning, buyer-seller
alliances, information flows, transportation, production management, and business-tobusiness marketing in a global setting. In the business world, there is a strong demand
for supply chain specialists. Whitman graduates in supply chain management are sought
and hired by such employers as Johnson & Johnson, Lockheed Martin, and
Pratt & Whitney.
The Whitman supply chain management program is the oldest such program
in the country, and recently ranked in the top 10 by Supply Chain Management Review.
Each year our prestigious Salzberg Award is presented to a leader in the supply chain
field in a day-long program that includes speaking and meeting with Whitman students.
Recent recipients include PepsiCo, CSX Transportation, Nike, and Sears.
IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT BUSINESS at Whitman.
Students and faculty enjoy social events throughout
the year, such as the Ice Cream Social and
International Day.

During the summer, you can earn college
credit by participating in management
internships in London, Madrid, and
Strasbourg; taking courses in international
business in Shanghai; or studying
globalization in a traveling seminar that
visits large companies and governmental
institutions in Belgium, England, France,
Germany, Holland, Italy, and Switzerland.
Study Abroad
In today’s ever-shrinking world, international
study abroad is more than a luxury. As you
live and study abroad, you’ll broaden your
perspective, learn to challenge assumptions,
and begin to develop a worldview beyond
your own cultural experience. Nearly 45
percent of SU students study abroad at
some point in their college career, and SU’s
highly respected international study program,
SU Abroad, offers semester, summer, shortterm, and yearlong options.
Many Whitman students travel to
London, where they follow a management
curriculum taught by SU faculty members.
SU management classes are also offered
in Madrid, Hong Kong, and Strasbourg. You
can sharpen your awareness of international
business methods and gain a competitive
edge when seeking employment. For more
information, visit suabroad.syr.edu.
Student Organizations
You can participate in one or more of
the many professional organizations and
honorary societies in the Whitman School.
Regardless of your major, you’ll find a club
that maintains active ties with the profession
and plans such special events as lectures
by prominent professionals and field trips
to business sites. Some of the campus
organizations you might be interested in as a
management student include the American
Marketing Association, American Production
and Inventory Control Society, Delta
Sigma Pi, Entrepreneurship and Emerging
Enterprises Club, Investment Club, National
Association of Black Accountants, Real
Estate Club, Students in Free Enterprise, and
Whitman Women in Business.
Speakers
Each year the Whitman School and its
research centers bring prominent business
leaders, entrepreneurs, and academics to
campus to discuss issues and trends of
the day. Recent speakers include Hugh F.
Johnston, chief financial officer of PepsiCo;
Raj Jain, president of Walmart India; Colleen
Arnold, senior vice president of IBM; David
Levy, president of sales, distribution, and
sports for Turner Broadcasting System;
Nicholas T. Pinchuk, chairman, president,
and CEO of Snap-on; and Martin J. Whitman,
chairman, Third Avenue Management, LLC.
Community Service
Whitman is one of the first business schools
in the nation to make service activity part
of the curriculum. You can complete the
service requirement by enrolling in a course
that has a service-learning component or by
securing a placement with an organization
of your choice. SU’s Mary Ann Shaw Center
for Public and Community Service helps you
find a local community service placement
that meets your personal and professional
goals. Recent students have volunteered at
such organizations as the Samaritan Center,
which provides hot meals to people in
need; Boys & Girls Clubs; the local Veterans
Administration Hospital; and nearby schools.
Research Centers
Students learn practical skills from
Whitman’s 13 research centers and
institutes, such as the Ballentine Investment
Institute, which provides Bloomberg
professional terminals to students and
sponsors trips to stock future exchanges and
brokerage firms, and the Falcone Center for
Entrepreneurship, which offers a business
plan competition and an entrepreneurial
internship program. Other centers include
the Kiebach Center for International
Business Studies, the Franklin Institute of
Transportation and Distribution Management,
and the Robert H. Brethen Operations
Management Institute. Students can also
apply to a number of internships and
fellowships available through the centers.
The Honors Program
The Renée Crown University Honors Program
is an enhanced educational experience for
students who seek an intense intellectual
challenge. The program requires an excellent
command of language and a commitment
to global awareness, civic engagement,
collaborative work, and academic breadth
and depth. As part of the experience,
students select a topic they are passionate
about and complete a major research
thesis or creative project—some of which
have included screenplays, films, paintings,
engineering projects, written theses, and
more. For more information, visit honors.syr.

Whitman takes you on a journey
and prepares you for a lifestyle and
career—not just a job. When I entered
the public sector, I was one of few
young people in politics who grasped
business issues. I took a position
as a campaign manager for an upstate New York mayoral race. My
candidate won and then hired me as the city’s public and media
relations director. Then, I accepted a position with New York City
Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s office.
Today, I am the Central New York regional director for U.S. Sen.
Charles Schumer. I manage ten counties across New York, lead a
regional staff, and work to ensure the success of Senator Schumer’s
efforts to keep our state thriving.

My experiences at Whitman gave
me the skills and confidence to
succeed in my career path beyond
the technical content alone. I was
consistently challenged to think
critically, to work in teams, and to be
a leader. Most importantly, Whitman
provided me with great connections
and the support I needed throughout my career search.
I began my career at KPMG LLP, and I became a certified public
accountant. Now, still with KPMG, I’m a senior manager in the audit
practice. I specialize in the financial services industry; the clients
I serve include global commercial banks, investment banks, and
broker-dealers. One of the things I love most about my job is the
constant challenge to think critically and adapt to an ever-changing
economic and regulatory environment.

The senior capstone project at the
Whitman School is incredible. Five
students come together and create
a business plan for an original
product or service. The entire process
is a testament to the collaborative,
entrepreneurial, and managerial
mindset that is built into Whitman.
I had two summer internships with JPMorgan Chase and was
fortunate enough to get a full-time offer. I am currently an analyst
in the Prime Brokerage Unit of the investment bank. Teamwork is
essential in my day-to-day life and I am so thankful that I had the
opportunity to enhance those skills as a Whitman student.

Whitman’s emphasis on teamwork
and public speaking is remarkable. I
still utilize the Whitman Career Center
and its resources when making
important career decisions. Its
commitment to working with alumni
sets it apart from career centers at
many other schools.
After graduation, I joined General Electric and completed the
Financial Management Program at GE Commercial Finance. In
2007, I joined NBC Universal and spent three years working as the
Syfy programming finance manager. Then, I spent some time at
Deloitte Consulting as a senior consultant, and in 2010, I joined the
Walt Disney Company as manager of digital ad sales strategy. My
role includes helping ABCFamily.com maximize revenue through its
web site and other non-linear platforms.

My coursework and involvement in
student organizations, such as SIFE,
developed me as a student and
a leader and provided me with a
great foundation for my career. I am

to that, I was a regional distribution coordinator in distribution
operations at Unilever.

The group dynamic at Whitman
forces you to understand how
all areas work together in a
business and it expanded
my ability to work in groups.
The Career Center helped me
discover what I wanted to do and
guided me toward companies and opportunities that would
be most appropriate for what I was looking for in a career.
My coursework was very beneficial during my internships
working on a hedge fund and with General Electric’s Financial

I chose the Whitman School
because when I visited, it just
had that “right” feeling. The
staff, faculty, and students were
very approachable. The kinds
of experiences that you have at
Whitman teach you the life skills
and teamwork ability that cannot
be developed in the classroom alone. Whitman has truly
become where I work, live, and play!
My experiences volunteering with Habitat for Humanity and
as a campus representative for Teach for America got me really
interested in service. I am glad to have found a way to combine
my interests in marketing and public relations with creating
educational opportunities for others.

Whitman allows students to have
the kind of experiences they
want and need. For example, I
founded the Hispanic Business
Community. I took part in the
Orange Value Fund, a rigorous
two-year program that allows a
carefully selected set of undergraduate students to manage
a $1.2 million hedge fund. I took graduate-level classes,
performed research reports on potential investments, and
networked with investment professionals. I also held internships
at Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase.

As a transfer student, I loved that
Whitman made it feasible for
me to transfer while still staying
on track to earn a marketing
degree. I had the opportunity to
meet Whitman alumnus David
Levy, head of sales at Turner
Broadcasting, at the Jonathan
Holtz Alumnus Ceremony. After this meeting, I joined his sales
force team for a summer internship.
I also attended the Whitman Marketing Exploration
Program, where I spent my winter break in New York City,
meeting with marketing professionals at Minyanville Media,
Turner Broadcasting, Manhattan Marketing Ensemble, Macy’s,
and more.

When I visited Whitman, I was
blown away with the building and
technology. The high-tech trading
simulation room and other
facilities assured me that this
was a state-of-the-art business
school. I have heard dozens of CEOs and vice presidents of
Fortune 500 and 100 companies speak. By studying abroad
at Syracuse University’s center in Hong Kong, I was able to
experience a new environment, learn Mandarin Chinese,
intern with a large financial firm, and travel throughout South
East Asia. I have had some amazing internships and career
opportunities at Whitman, including an internship at Unilever

Campus Life
At Syracuse University, situated high on a hill
overlooking the City of Syracuse, you’ll enjoy
the best of two worlds. It’s large enough to
offer a wide array of academic programs,
student organizations and performing arts
groups, and a Division I athletics program.
But it’s also small enough to ensure
that you’ll easily feel at home within the
intimate community of your home college.
SU students come from all 50 states
and more than 100 countries, and they
choose from among more than 200 majors
offered in SU’s nine undergraduate schools
and colleges. Regardless of your major
or your home college, you’ll build lasting
relationships with like-minded peers and
mentoring faculty members.
26
whitman.syr.edu
On Main Campus, you’ll find a mix
of classic and contemporary academic
buildings and a sweeping Quad where you
can enjoy lunch, toss a Frisbee, or just
stretch out on the grass for a little idle
skygazing. Residential housing is provided
either on Main Campus or on South
Campus, the latter of which is located
about a mile away and served by a free
shuttle. There are also living and learning
communities to promote connections with
your classmates around common interests.
Most of SU’s 21 residence halls are
equipped with lounge space, laundry rooms,
and recreation space. Many also have a
computer lab, café, or exercise area. Wireless
capabilities are available in most locations
across campus. At mealtime, you can
choose from five residential dining centers,
two student centers with dining services,
numerous cafes, and two campus groceries.
Outside of class, you can choose from
more than 300 student organizations,
including performing arts groups; sports
teams; and student-run print, radio, and
broadcast media, to name a few. Work out,
swim, or join a pick-up basketball game
at one of our recreation facilities; take in
a concert or lecture at Hendricks Chapel;
or get involved in any number of service
opportunities through the Mary Ann Shaw
Center for Public and Community Service.
Opportunities for involvement extend into
the community as well, with the Universitycity Connective Corridor initiative linking the
campus with downtown galleries, museums,
theaters, music venues, and cultural
festivals.
The City
The mini-metropolis of Syracuse, New York,
fuses distinctive neighborhoods, yearround festivals, parks, professional sports,
destination shopping, and a thriving art,
music, and social scene. View American
impressionism at the Everson Museum of
Art. Hike the trails at Green Lakes State
Park. Browse the shops in historic Armory
Square. You’ll soon find that the University
campus and city community are deeply
intertwined. You can take classes downtown
at SU’s modern Warehouse building, which
houses community art spaces and a creative
problem-solving lab. You may also want
to join faculty, staff, and other students
as they work with the city on planning the
Connective Corridor, a three-mile urban
design project that links the University with
the city’s cultural attractions.
Beyond the community, you may be
tempted to take a road trip. Just down the
road are the Finger Lakes. Venture north
to ski, hike, or gaze at the Adirondack
Mountains. Explore the area’s landscape,
and you’ll soon discover the city and region’s
distinctive character and robust spirit. Join
other Central New Yorkers in capturing the
energy of each of the four seasons: brilliant
color displays in fall, snowy ski trails in
winter, flower-filled parks in spring, and
balmy beaches in summer.
Come see for yourself. We invite you and
your family to visit Syracuse University to
experience the campus and community, and
meet with our faculty, staff, and students.
The Office of Admissions is open Monday
through Friday and selected Saturdays in
the fall and spring. Call 315-443-3611 in
