You’ll be providing and interpreting the information needed by decision makers, investors, and other corporate stakeholders. Your coursework will give you a full view of the various functions of accounting: financial and managerial accounting, auditing, and taxation. To be licensed as a certified public accountant (C.P.A.) in New York State, you must complete 150 hours of education. You can meet the requirement by completing a one-year M.S. degree program or by taking additional classes as necessary beyond the educational requirements of the 121-hour professional program in accounting. Your advisor can discuss with you the educational requirements for other states. As a Whitman accounting graduate, you’ll be in high demand by major public accounting firms, corporations, government agencies, and not-for-profit organizations. In recent years, more than half of SU accounting graduates accepted employment with Big Four and other major C.P.A. firms—before graduation. WHITMAN STUDENTS regularly engage in community service activities, including making baby blankets for the new Golisano Children’s Hospital in Syracuse. This was a cooperative project of Beta Alpha Psi, Whitman’s organization for accounting and finance students, and recruiters from Deloitte. 4 whitman.syr.edu whitman.syr.edu 5 Whitman seniors celebrate after presenting their capstone business plans to a panel of distinguished judges. 6 whitman.syr.edu Entrepreneurship and Emerging Enterprises Do you have a big idea for a new business? Students also enjoy support and guidance from Whitman’s high-profile Retail Advisory Board, whose membership includes senior executives from Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Ross Stores, Kohl’s, TJX, Apple, Lord & Taylor, and New York & Company. You’ll study logistics, inventory control, risk-sharing, supply-chain planning, buyer-seller alliances, information flows, transportation, production management, and business-tobusiness marketing in a global setting. In the business world, there is a strong demand for supply chain specialists. When I entered the public sector, I was one of few young people in politics who grasped business issues. I took a position as a campaign manager for an upstate New York mayoral race. My candidate won and then hired me as the city’s public and media relations director. Then, I accepted a position with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s office. Today, I am the Central New York regional director for U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer. I manage ten counties across New York, lead a regional staff, and work to ensure the success of Senator Schumer’s efforts to keep our state thriving. Cheryl Curri ’04, G’05 Accounting and Finance My experiences at Whitman gave me the skills and confidence to succeed in my career path beyond the technical content alone. I was consistently challenged to think critically, to work in teams, and to be a leader. Most importantly, Whitman provided me with great connections and the support I needed throughout my career search. I began my career at KPMG LLP, and I became a certified public accountant. Now, still with KPMG, I’m a senior manager in the audit practice. I specialize in the financial services industry; the clients I serve include global commercial banks, investment banks, and broker-dealers. One of the things I love most about my job is the constant challenge to think critically and adapt to an ever-changing economic and regulatory environment. Kenny Hernandez ’10 Finance The senior capstone project at the Whitman School is incredible. Five students come together and create a business plan for an original product or service. The entire process is a testament to the collaborative, entrepreneurial, and managerial mindset that is built into Whitman. I had two summer internships with JPMorgan Chase and was fortunate enough to get a full-time offer. I am currently an analyst in the Prime Brokerage Unit of the investment bank. Teamwork is essential in my day-to-day life and I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to enhance those skills as a Whitman student. Chad Bender ’05 Finance and Television-Radio-Film Whitman’s emphasis on teamwork and public speaking is remarkable. I still utilize the Whitman Career Center and its resources when making important career decisions. Its commitment to working with alumni sets it apart from career centers at many other schools. After graduation, I joined General Electric and completed the Financial Management Program at GE Commercial Finance. In 2007, I joined NBC Universal and spent three years working as the Syfy programming finance manager. Then, I spent some time at Deloitte Consulting as a senior consultant, and in 2010, I joined the Walt Disney Company as manager of digital ad sales strategy. My role includes helping ABCFamily.com maximize revenue through its web site and other non-linear platforms. Caryn Espy ‘09 Retail and Supply Chain Management My coursework and involvement in student organizations, such as SIFE, developed me as a student and a leader and provided me with a great foundation for my career. I am currently working at Unilever as a logistics operations specialist. Prior to that, I was a regional distribution coordinator in distribution operations at Unilever. 24 whitman.syr.edu Student Profiles Adam Davidson Finance, Management, and Supply Chain Management The group dynamic at Whitman forces you to understand how all areas work together in a business and it expanded my ability to work in groups. The Career Center helped me discover what I wanted to do and guided me toward companies and opportunities that would be most appropriate for what I was looking for in a career. My coursework was very beneficial during my internships working on a hedge fund and with General Electric’s Financial Management Program. Being a student ambassador for University 100 and a member of our pep band, the Sour Sitrus Society, allows me to be involved in the larger University community. Jessica Law Marketing and Public Relations I chose the Whitman School because when I visited, it just had that “right” feeling. The staff, faculty, and students were very approachable. The kinds of experiences that you have at Whitman teach you the life skills and teamwork ability that cannot be developed in the classroom alone. Whitman has truly become where I work, live, and play! My experiences volunteering with Habitat for Humanity and as a campus representative for Teach for America got me really interested in service. I am glad to have found a way to combine my interests in marketing and public relations with creating educational opportunities for others. Tarek El Gammal-Ortiz Finance Whitman allows students to have the kind of experiences they want and need. For example, I founded the Hispanic Business Community. I took part in the Orange Value Fund, a rigorous two-year program that allows a carefully selected set of undergraduate students to manage a $1.2 million hedge fund. I took graduate-level classes, performed research reports on potential investments, and networked with investment professionals. I also held internships at Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase. Andrea Keenan Marketing As a transfer student, I loved that Whitman made it feasible for me to transfer while still staying on track to earn a marketing degree. I had the opportunity to meet Whitman alumnus David Levy, head of sales at Turner Broadcasting, at the Jonathan Holtz Alumnus Ceremony. After this meeting, I joined his sales force team for a summer internship. I also attended the Whitman Marketing Exploration Program, where I spent my winter break in New York City, meeting with marketing professionals at Minyanville Media, Turner Broadcasting, Manhattan Marketing Ensemble, Macy’s, and more. Josh Fishman Marketing Management and Entrepreneurship and Emerging Enterprises When I visited Whitman, I was blown away with the building and technology. The high-tech trading simulation room and other facilities assured me that this was a state-of-the-art business school. I have heard dozens of CEOs and vice presidents of Fortune 500 and 100 companies speak. By studying abroad at Syracuse University’s center in Hong Kong, I was able to experience a new environment, learn Mandarin Chinese, intern with a large financial firm, and travel throughout South East Asia. I have had some amazing internships and career opportunities at Whitman, including an internship at Unilever Corporation. whitman.syr.edu 25 Campus Life At Syracuse University, situated high on a hill overlooking the City of Syracuse, you’ll enjoy the best of two worlds.
