What can you do with your map? Take a look at these activites for inspiration! A World of Animals Create animal flashcards for each letter of the alphabet. Ask students where they think they live and attach them to the correct area. Find Out More! Show students the map and ask them what they know about each area. Divide the class into groups and allocate each group an area to learn more about. They can carry out research on the internet, use the school library, or devise a questionnaire for adults/their parents. The groups can then present their results to the class or create a poster to display on the wall. Hello, World Get students saying hello in different languages! Can they work out what language each ‘hello’ is in and match them to the correct place on the map? Get students discussing the difference in alphabets and finding out more about each country. How’s the Weather? Create weather flashcards. Ask students where they live and see if they can identify it on the map. Ask them ‘How’s the weather today?’ and students put the appropriate flashcard on their area of the map. Students can then place the other weather flashcards around the map either as directed by you or using their imagination, e.g. ‘In Asia it’s windy’. Time Travel Teach your students the time by identifying what time it is across various continents and countries. Draw clocks on flashcards and write city labels to see if students can identify the time zones on the map and what time it is there. Try using some cross-curricular maths skills to work out the time zones or get students researching online. World Weather Students create weather flashcards. At the start of the day ask them to present and predict the weather for that day in their area and around the world. Use ‘will’ for predictions. At the end of the day, check the weather for the areas chosen and see if the predictions were correct. Need more inspiration? Photocopy and cut-up the hellos in different languages. Ask students to place them on the map where they think the languages are spoken. Idea 2: After matching the hellos to each place on the map, ask students about what school life might be like in these countries, carrying out research on the internet and comparing and contrasting with their own daily life. Students can create a project to present to the class or create a simple table of differences. ! Hol ! Sp nish Ar bic Turkish Hindi English Merh b ! Portuguese Russi n Hello Ol ! Vietn mese Polish Czesc Chinese 你好 Xin ch o Georgi n Matching Information Pairs Idea 1: Photocopy the pictures and descriptions worksheet and give one to each member of the class. See if they can match each picture and description and then paste in their books or create a poster. Idea 2: Give out the pictures and descriptions to class members. See if they can identify their pair by walking around the class and reading and looking at pictures. Ask students to stand next to their pair. Once all matched, ask students to present their information to the class. Idea 3: Give out the description cards to class members. Give out several of the picture cards so all students have one. The student with the description card reads out their description. The students with the correct picture cards stand up. Tip: For lower levels, sit those with the same picture card together. World Pairs Idea 1: Print word cards and picture cards. See if students can match the word cards and the picture cards, then see if students can place them correctly on the map. Idea 2: Print word cards and picture cards and place face down on the board. Split the class into two groups and ask representatives from each group to turn over two at a time. Each time they turn a card over they need to say what’s in the picture or read the word card. If they match the picture and word they get to keep those cards. Tip: Ensure students can’t see through the face-down cards Tip: Ask students to create their own matching pairs Idea 3: Put students into pairs, allocate them each a picture or a word. Ask them to find out as much as they can about their subject. Encourage them to use the internet, or for a home-school link get them researching with their parents. Students can then create a poster or discuss their subject with their classmates.
