Wetland restoration
Carbon farming could restore Australia’s southern coastal wetlands
Australia’s southern coastal wetlands are more diverse than most people realise. Fifty percent of
coastal wetlands have been lost from the east coast of Australia. Despite this staggering loss now have
an opportunity to redress the poor treatment of our southern coastal wetlands.

Wetland management
Adaptive management of Ramsar wetlands
The Macquarie Marshes are one of Australia’s iconic wetlands, recognised for their international
importance, significant waterbird breeding sites as well as complex and extensive flood-dependent
vegetation. The integration of management with science allows key indicators to be monitored at the
site which will inform management.

Moreton Bay seagrass projected to drastically decline with sea level rise
To most of us, what is hidden beneath the waves of our coastal environment remains invisible and is
little thought about or cared about. Yet seagrass meadows, though hidden from our direct view,
contribute valuable ecological services supporting valuable fish nurseries, as food for dugongs and
turtles, and as a highly efficient blue carbon sink sequestering carbon.

Broome breathes out: Woodside shelves gas hub
The Kimberley region is internationally recognised for its unspoilt marine, coastal and inland
environments including islands, coral reefs, mangroves, rainforests, rangelands and rivers. Australian
Wetland Network members the Australian Conservation Foundation and Conservation Council of
Western Australia have been campaigning against the development. Residents and environmentalists
in the Kimberley and around the country celebrated on 12 April when Woodside Petroleum announced
that it would shelve its plans for a massive industrialisation of James Price Point, near Broome. The
plans were abandoned after the company found that the $40 billion plans for a liquefied natural gas hub
would be uneconomical.
