Atul Mahajan, CMA
President & CEO, Oshawa Power and Utilities Corporation
Fuelling career success with green energy
I started my career with Oshawa Power and
Utilities Corporation (OPUC) as a CFO with an
operational and strategic focus. My CMA
designation advanced my career as it helped me
hone my skills in identifying the key drivers of a
business and making a positive impact on those
drivers. With my ability to look past the numbers
and develop an understanding of the key drivers
for creating value at OPUC, I was able to make a
difference and progress to the role of CEO.
I am leading OPUC through a major strategic initiative to introduce a “corporate cultural change”
and diversify the revenue mix while achieving
productivity gains in all our business lines.
We are positioning OPUC to take advantage of
advancements in green energy technologies
and to build a robust and “smart” electrical grid.
We are expanding our distributed energy generation assets by utilizing renewable resources
‑ such as wind, solar, and biogas ‑ to pursue the
expansion of our “clean and green energy” generation portfolio.

Answering the call of emerging markets
“Green business” is good business
When dealing in business internationally, you need
to grasp and understand a number of different
perspectives from all areas of business, not just
accounting. That’s where my CMA comes in. It
helps me see how everything fits together from
marketing to HR, through logistics to the final sale,
which is pivotal to closing a long-term international
deal. The CMA designation creates the foundation
for this holistic perspective, which I use every day
to make my software company succeed in the
international marketplace.
For many years, the environmental movement was
perceived as a threat to the business community,
but I want to show the other side of the story – that
environmental responsibility can actually increase
profitability, and has increased it in the Canadian
petroleum refinery business.
The CMA is a flexible, value-adding designation, so
it complements many industries and roles. It is a
good fit whether you are already on a career path
in the arts, tourism, engineering, environmental
sciences or public administration because strategic
management skills are invaluable in any sort of
organization. My career is reflective of that diversity. Before teaching, I had ten years experience as
an MIS analyst, an accountant and a consultant.

CMA spells success in any language
Flexible skills to fit every industry
As an internationally trained professional, earning my CMA designation was my biggest career
accomplishment here in Canada. I set my sights on
this goal, and worked hard to achieve it. It took a lot
of commitment and dedication, and it was definitely
worth it. I am confident my CMA will continue to
bring me excellent career opportunities.
The CMA designation has opened so many doors
and given me the tools to broaden my experience.
My CMA has made it possible for me to move up the
career ladder while working in a variety of industries
over the course of my career, moving from insurance, to tech, and now to communications at TELUS.
I use the skills I learned as a CMA in just about
everything I do. In my spare time, I am a Commissioned Officer in the Canadian Forces Reserve,
where I command an Air Cadet Squadron in one
of Toronto’s at-risk neighbourhoods. I have applied the insights from the CMA designation to
how my unit operates there in a number of ways,
from strategic planning to increasing operational
efficiency.
