COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course offers a platform for discussion on topical architectural issues, placing them in a wider historical, cultural and theoretical context.
The seminar format involves the direct participation of the students, through guided readings, group discussions, and textual and critical analysis of architectural theory and projects.
The scope of the seminars is to develop an argumentative criticality that will enable the students to develop a wellgrounded and yet independent critical position in architecture.
At the end of the course the students present a written paper (3000 words) based on the topics discussed in the seminars.
Each year the course focuses on a specific theme.
THEMES 200910
The 200910 course - ARCHITECTS ON ARCHITECTS - performs a critical reading of Rafael Moneo’s book, Theoretical Anxiety and Design Strategies in the Work of Eight Contemporary Architects (Cambridge, Mass.;
London: MIT Press, 2004).
The book collects a series of essays on contemporary architects, developed by Moneo throughout the 1990s as lectures to students: James Stirling, Venturi & Scott Brown, Aldo Rossi, Peter Eisenman, Alvaro Siza,
Frank O. Gehry, Rem Koolhaas, Herzog & de Meuron.

Week 13
The reading of this text will provide the starting point for group discussions and for students’ papers on the eight protagonists of contemporary architecture studied by Moneo.
The course seminars will expand their scope with further research on the topics.
Students will research and discuss the eight architects analysed by Moneo, and will be asked to further explore both their design projects and their writings.
The course will explore the relationship between these architects and their theoretical concerns, as well as the architectural debate that surrounds their work, and the influence of their designed and built projects and of their ideas and texts on today’s architecture.
At the end of the course students will produce a critical analytical paper on one of the eight architects examined in the seminars.
Alternatively, students may choose to investigate the work and ideas of architects of a younger generation, who were influenced or reacted by the work of the architects examined in the seminars.
Ultimately, the body of work produced by the course will aspire to produce an alternative to Moneo’s book in the form a series of revised positions, or a complement and addition to this book, by introducing further and more recent case a studies.
The main focus of these investigation will remain the tension between theory and design in the work of the architects, or, as Moneo puts it, between their ‘theoretical anxiety’ and their ‘design strategies.’
