themselves. You only want to give them your changes,
not a whole new database.
Introducing Surgical Strike. The first product that lets

developers to create a small file containing only the
update that can be executed by your users to upgrade
their Access data files and applications.

letting you update applications with precision.

Surgical Strike loads as an add-in to Access 97 or Access 2000/2002. Start with an empty database or a previous created Surgical Strike Patch file. You run the add-in and a wizard like interface will prompt you for information about the patch. The wizard will first ask you for the source
MDB file that contains any new objects you want to include in the patch. You select the new
objects from a list of objects in the source MDB. If you specify an object that already exists in the
target MDB to be patched, the object will be replaced, otherwise the new object will just be added.
If the object is a table, you can also specify if the table should be put in the front end or the back
end file. You can also create a list of objects that you want deleted in the target MDB.
If you do not want to replace an entire form, report, or module but instead just replace the VBA
code, you can do that too. You can add or delete a specific procedure. You can even add, delete,
or replace lines of code. This is done by entering the type of object, name of the object, and what
code is to be deleted, added or replaced. You can work with procedures as a whole, or individual
lines of code. If the user has customized the look of the form and you only need to change some
code, this is the solution.
You can make detailed table or query changes including adding or deleting fields, or changing field
properties. Imagine adding a new field to a table without affecting the data in the table.
For even more specific and detailed type changes, you can define property changes for the database, tables, table fields, queries, query fields, forms, form controls, reports, and report controls.
Without replacing the objects, you can make changes that will affect how the application looks and
runs. By specifying to the wizard a reference MDB, lists of objects are available so defining the
changes are easy.
In addition to changing objects, object properties, and VBA code, you can change the data in
tables by specifying one or more of queries to run. These action queries gives you the developer the ability to fix or correct data errors that may exist in the tables.
Finally, you specify a version for the patch. This is stored in the target MDB files as a custom database property. When Surgical Strike is executed on the target MDB, the version number is checked
first. Only if the version is the correct version will the patch run. The version number is stored in
both front end and back end databases so configuration control problems are eliminated.
At any time while the wizard is running you can choose to print a report of the patch as it is
defined. This provides the developer and user the information needed to make sure the patch
definition is correct. It also provides documentation for the version change. After defining the
patch, you then finish the process by creating the SSP file. All the objects needed as well as the
support objects to make changes are put into the SSP database with a user interface to run
Surgical Strike. The SSP can then be distributed to users. When the users run Surgical Strike,
they are prompted for the file and file location for the front end application. Surgical Strike will
automatically find any back end databases based on the links established in the front end. The
user does not need to do anything else, Surgical Strike will take care of the rest.
Surgical Strike makes program support so much easier. Updating an application with Surgical
Strike is simpler since shortcuts, filenames, file locations, linked tables, connections, etc. do not
have to be re-established.

The Security Manager is a stand alone form that administrators can use to
maintain user memberships, groups, permissions, monitor security status,
and print security reports. Tabs are used to select the various functions. A
combo box on the Users tab contains a list of users for the current database.
This list comes from the user system table within MSDE/SQL Server. You
can choose a user from MSDE/SQL Server security, or add a new user by
just typing in the name and then assigning a group to the user.
Users belong to groups, and the Groups tab provides the interface to add
new groups, and delete existing groups. In addition selecting a group will
show a list of users that belong to that group. Once a group has been established, the administrator can set the permissions.
On the Group Permissions tab you set permissions for forms, reports or
form/report controls. You can limit who can open the form or report and control what each user can do, and what data fields they have access to.
Permissions for forms include: No Access, Read Only, Add Only, Edit Only,
Edit and Add, Edit and Delete, Edit/Add/Delete. Permissions for form controls
vary depending on the control. Reports and report controls have the permissions: No Access, and Print. The checkbox Auto add code to objects
when checked, will add the security VBA code to the appropriate form or
report if it is not there.
Once group permissions have been established, you can view the permissions for forms and reports on the Object Permissions tab. Choose the type
of object and select the object by name from the pull-down list. The control
name and type is displayed along with the group names and permissions
assigned.
The status tab displays security status, listing of security tables, and other
functions. The Database Security button popÕs up the SQL Server security
dialog box. The Change Connection button displays the Data Link
Properties dialog window so you can change the server, database, and the
logon user ID. The Update Status button will refresh the tab on the form with
the system status and security tables. The Check Code button goes through
all forms and reports that have security permissions established and makes
sure that the appropriate VBA code is in place to call the security functions
when the object is opened.
The Reports tab of the Security Manager provides options to select three different reports. These reports provide documentation for the security system
groups, users, and permissions.
To prevent users from bypassing security and gaining access to the security
code, the Access Project must be converted to an ADE file after security has
been setup. This will remove the ability to go into the design view of forms,
reports, and modules. The security tables must also be secured through
MSDE/SQL Server.

any data in tables or queries with or without your forms using our predefined interfaces. You can create and save searches for later use. Call

can search any table or query using a generic datasheet form. You can
