YEAR 7 SWIMMING AND ACTIVITIES DAY
BLACK SPOT GRANT
The Year 7 Swimming Program culminated on the last Wednesday of Term 1 with an extended session of swimming
and water activities. Students found it a challenge to swim 50m each of freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and
butterfly, using their improved techniques learnt over the course of the Black Spot Grant Program.
Water activities included underwater ‘dolphin’ and ‘figure 8’ manoeuvres, bucket relays and teamwork to stretch
swimming caps in the water for students to sit in!
Thank you to the Instructors at ‘Swim with Francis’ for their dedication. Our students are now safer when swimming at
the beach or in the pool.

TRANSITION TO YEAR 7
As a follow up to our recent information evening, a number of our Year 8
students (including Jason Marchant and Zachary Magri pictured) visited
our feeder primary schools to talk about making the transition to high
school.
Taylor Irwin, Sacha Murnane, Jason and Zachary did a great job of
recalling what they were excited and anxious about when they were
making the leap into high school. They also assured the Year 5/6
students that they will be well supported to make the transition to Ballina
High.

NEW LIBRARY COMPUTERS
EVERYGIRL
Everygirl Program celebrated
the season of Easter this
year with some chocolate
and craft making. The girls
took home their craft and
enjoyed the chocolate. We
have had over 200 girls
come to this program
throughout Term 1.
Everygirl is on every Friday at Recess in the ALC and is
open to all girls to form new friendships, manicure their
nails and style their hair in a relaxed environment.
As the School Chaplain, this is one of the many
programs I am part of within the school community. I
am also available to speak with during the week for
support and guidance in the area of choices,
relationships, values and spiritual matters. If you would
like to access this support, please contact the school’s
Front Office.
Mr Miles and Mr Wright from our Technology Faculty
have been hard at work installing new computers in our
Library. The response has been overwhelming by the
students (as pictured below).

TIPS FOR PARENTS
KIDS, SOCIAL MEDIA and
PRIVACY
Regardless of your child’s age, the world may already
know a lot more about them than you suspect.
According to recent research:
92% of children under the age of 2 have a
digital shadow (it starts with proud parents
posting newborn baby photos on Facebook or
Instagram)
a quarter of Australian children 8 - 12 years old
use Facebook, but the minimum age for a user
is 13 years.
more than 20 per cent of
tweens publish photos of
themselves on Instagram
young people 14 - 19 have
an average of 453 fans,
friends or followers on social media.
2014 Privacy Awareness Week, 4 - 10 May 2014, is a
good time to review your family’s privacy settings and
discuss online security. You’ll find lots of practical information and resources to share with your kids at
www.ipc.nsw.gov.au
IS YOUR CHILD’S BACKPACK
DAMAGING THEIR SPINE?
A recent Australian study has shown that
approximately 25% of school-aged children suffer from
back and/or neck pain at any one time. It’s believed to
be due to a combination of factors such as poor
posture, everyday load carrying and the use of
computers.
Westmead Children’s Hospital, Sydney suggests young
people should:
not carry more than 10% of their body weight
use a backpack with the straps over both shoulders and a waist strap
load gear so that the heavier
objects are nearer to the spine,
with the lighter objects towards the
front of the pack
lift a backpack properly- bend at
the knees and lift the pack with
both hands

ACCOUNTANCY TRAINEESHIPS
WCa Chartered Accountants with offices based in Lismore and Ballina, are a local accountancy firm established in 1922.
We are pleased to offer traineeships to locally based, motivated and career orientated Year 12 school leavers with a
number of positions available starting February 2015.
Accountancy Traineeships combine university study with practical experience in the workforce. Trainees are given
exposure to all areas of taxation, auditing, accountancy and small business management. Trainees should be
self-motivated, have good communication skills and enjoy travelling and meeting people.
Trainees are asked to complete an external business degree at Southern Cross University, with the eventual aim of
becoming a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia. Trainees are provided with study leave and
in-house training to assist them in successfully completing their degree. External studies are usually completed over a
4-5 year period depending on the number of units completed each semester.
Trainees are encouraged after graduation to complete the CA Program, which then entitles them to membership of The
Institute of Chartered Accountants, one of the most respected business organisations in the world today. As with
university, both study and financial assistance are provided by WC a chartered accountants to trainees undertaking to
complete the CA Qualification.
Any questions on Accountancy Traineeships can be directed to your Careers Adviser or Tony Bazzana, Partner, at WC a
chartered accountants on 6621 2581 or via email tbazzana@wcagroup.com.au
