Ballina High School’s Official Newsletter ‘Light of Learning’ Issue 06 THE PILOT Term 2, Week 2 - 2014 Ballina High School was first established in 1929 as an Intermediate High School. In 1956 the school became a High School. Ba llina High School has a long tradition of excellence in academic, cultural and sporting endeavours. Students have gained district, Regional, State and National sta tus in all areas of school life. YEAR 7 SWIMMING AND ACTIVITIES DAY BLACK SPOT GRANT The Year 7 Swimming Program culminated on the last Wednesday of Term 1 with an extended session of swimming and water activities. Students found it a challenge to swim 50m each of freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly, using their improved techniques learnt over the course of the Black Spot Grant Program. Water activities included underwater ‘dolphin’ and ‘figure 8’ manoeuvres, bucket relays and teamwork to stretch swimming caps in the water for students to sit in! Thank you to the Instructors at ‘Swim with Francis’ for their dedication. Our students are now safer when swimming at the beach or in the pool. Ms Fleming Water Safety Black Spot Coordinator TRANSITION TO YEAR 7 As a follow up to our recent information evening, a number of our Year 8 students (including Jason Marchant and Zachary Magri pictured) visited our feeder primary schools to talk about making the transition to high school. Taylor Irwin, Sacha Murnane, Jason and Zachary did a great job of recalling what they were excited and anxious about when they were making the leap into high school. They also assured the Year 5/6 students that they will be well supported to make the transition to Ballina High. According to recent research: 92% of children under the age of 2 have a digital shadow (it starts with proud parents posting newborn baby photos on Facebook or Instagram) a quarter of Australian children 8 - 12 years old use Facebook, but the minimum age for a user is 13 years. more than 20 per cent of tweens publish photos of themselves on Instagram young people 14 - 19 have an average of 453 fans, friends or followers on social media. 2014 Privacy Awareness Week, 4 - 10 May 2014, is a good time to review your family’s privacy settings and discuss online security. You’ll find lots of practical information and resources to share with your kids at www.ipc.nsw.gov.au IS YOUR CHILD’S BACKPACK DAMAGING THEIR SPINE? A recent Australian study has shown that approximately 25% of school-aged children suffer from back and/or neck pain at any one time. It’s believed to be due to a combination of factors such as poor posture, everyday load carrying and the use of computers. Westmead Children’s Hospital, Sydney suggests young people should: not carry more than 10% of their body weight use a backpack with the straps over both shoulders and a waist strap load gear so that the heavier objects are nearer to the spine, with the lighter objects towards the front of the pack lift a backpack properly- bend at the knees and lift the pack with both hands For more tips at http://bit.ly/1iB4OBo EVENT DATE Year 8 - “Thinking About Uni” Seminar Thursday 15 May Sorry Day Monday 26 May Year 9 - “Going To Uni” Tuesday 5 August NAIDOC Week of 14 July Year 7 - “Uni Opens Up Your World” Thursday 16 October SCU Info Day Wednesday 10 December ACCOUNTANCY TRAINEESHIPS WCa Chartered Accountants with offices based in Lismore and Ballina, are a local accountancy firm established in 1922.
