Dear Friends of St. Ignatius,
For more than 155 years, St. Ignatius College Preparatory has been providing an
outstanding Jesuit college preparatory education for the young people of the Bay
Area. I have been on the job since July 1 as SI’s president. My time at SI, thus far,
compared to 155-plus years of academic excellence is not much to write home
about! However, I have been given the charge to welcome you to this edition of
our Annual Report, and it is an opportunity that I warmly embrace.
During the short time that I have been a member of the SI community, I have
been impressed with the outpouring of love and support that so many people have
for our school. Certainly our alumni lead the charge in this area. I have met alums
from a wide variety of classes. Without exception, these good people have told
me how proud they are of their association with SI. In addition to meeting our
alumni, I have also had the pleasure of meeting many members of our community – SI faculty, staff, parents,
past parents, benefactors and students – who all hold SI in high esteem. What is it about our beloved school
that has such a profound impact on our community? I believe our school is so special because our identity as
a Jesuit high school is at our core.
Jesuit secondary education is about transforming our students into young women and men for and with
others. Yes, I know that you have more than likely heard that phrase a time or two! Our academics and our
co-curriculars are strong. We have an outstanding faculty, staff and administration; we are blessed. However,
if we were to stop with all of those good ingredients, we would simply be a very good school. A Jesuit high
school goes deeper and actively promotes a philosophy based on the spirituality of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the
founder of the Jesuits. Ignatius was all about helping an individual find God in all things – from the simplest
moment of a day to the more complex, challenging parts of life. At SI, we actively live out Ignatius’ vision of
striving to find God in all things – from the challenge of a problem in algebra and the beauty of the written
word to the laughter around the table at lunch time.
What also makes our Jesuit identity so distinctive are the men and women – laity and Jesuit – who live out
the mission of our school each day. Over the past few weeks, I have heard many stories about the “legends”
of SI, men and women who in some way reached out and touched our students’ hearts and minds. In many
ways, both great and small, our faculty, staff and administration bring the person of Jesus to our students
each day. The spirit of St. Ignatius of Loyola is alive and well at SI!
The many good works that take place each day here – in the classroom and beyond – would not be
possible without our many gracious benefactors and their steadfast support. Thanks to the generosity of
so many people who love SI, we have a school that continues to help our students soar to new heights.
As you read over the list of names of our benefactors from the past year, I would ask you to offer a prayer
of thanksgiving for these exceptional men and women. On behalf of our Board of Trustees, our Board of
Regents, our faculty and staff and our students whom we are blessed to serve, thank you for your kind
thoughts and for your financial support. Please be assured of the prayers of the entire SI community for
you and your loved ones.
Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam!

We especially thank the following lifetime friends who have made provisions in their estate plans—bequests,
charitable trusts, gifts of life insurance or retirement funds—to support SI’s Endowment Fund. Such gifts
provide for the long-term welfare of SI and may also provide donors with valuable tax and income benefits
during their lifetime. The forethought and generosity of the following is most appreciated.

Twenty Year Donor Club
SI is honoring those who have made donations to the school for 20 or more consecutive years.
We are indebted to these men and women for their constant and unflagging support of St. Ignatius
College Preparatory and for its mission of forming men and women of conscience, competence and compassion.
We thank them and ask all of you to consider making an annual gift so that, one day, you too may join their ranks.

Contributions Report
Partnership
by Joe Vollert ’84, Vice President for Development
St. Ignatius College Preparatory thrives on a multitude of partnerships. I
draw your attention to three key ones.
In this past year, the nine members of the Board of Trustees – with the
Jesuit members holding the majority vote – hired SI’s first lay president,
Mr. John Knight. This partnership is one of mission. The Trustees are
charged with ensuring SI’s fidelity to its mission and have likewise charged
Mr. Knight, as director of the work, with helping everyone at SI live up
to the mission of the school as they form policies, make decisions and
perform the day-to-day operations.
The second partnership is one often referred to in Jesuit circles as “the
work.” It is a partnership of the faculty and staff to the mission. The real work
is played out each day in the classroom and chapel and on the field, court
and stage. Our faculty and staff instruct, inspire and challenge our 1,450
young Ignatians to choose a life centered on Christ, the man we meet in
the gospels, who teaches us to respond courageously to the challenges of
our times. There is nothing more sacred than the relationship between our
students and their teachers, counselors, coaches, directors and priests.
Mr. Totah’s quarterly Genesis magazine tells the stories of the fruits of
this work: teachers and students who do the work at SI and of alumni who
take that work into their careers and communities. The stories showcase
many leaders who are innovative, passionate and attuned to the key social
issues of our day.
The last partnership key to this “work” is with you, our loyal and generous
alumni, parents, friends and benefactors. This partnership has succeeded
over the years because you have given us your trust. SI receives no
government support; thus, you and you alone empower SI to provide clean,
safe and appropriate state-of-the-art facilities for our faculty and students. You
help us provide a Jesuit education to more than 25 percent of our students
who otherwise could not afford to attend SI. You allow us to innovate so that
we may provide the best possible education to tomorrow’s generations. In
short, your partnership ensures SI’s fidelity to its mission. Great teaching,
facilities and programs don’t just happen. They take strategic planning, proper
resources and strong leadership.
These three partnerships, a trinity of sorts, echo the partnerships Christ
had – his partnership with his disciples; with those whom he healed; and with
the Father and Holy Spirit, the other members of the Holy Trinity. So, too, do
we find strength in and give thanks for these three partnerships that give life
to all that we do.
Sixty seven members of the Class of 2013 went on immersion
experiences over the summer. Above, Nicole Vincelette ’13 harvested
lettuce in Salinas.
