GENERAL SPECIFICATION
1 General
1.1 The contractor shall be responsible for the correct supply, installation, wiring, etc., in conformance with
relevant regulations and codes of practice including B.S.7671: 2001, of the lighting equipment described in
this specification and lighting drawings and schedules prepared by the electrical engineer. The specification is
only concerned with the specific requirements of the client and is not intended to, or should be understood
to free the contractor from statutory obligations with regard to electrical wiring and safety or any relevant
British Standards, legislation, or code of practice.
1.2 The contractor shall ensure that the work is completed in a timely and satisfactory manner and appropriately coordinated with other trades working on the site.
1.3 The contractor shall ensure that the site is left in a clean and tidy state and shall dispose of all waste as
laid down in “Environmental Policy” and shall retain copies of all waste transfer notes for inspection by the
client’s site agents.
1.4 The contractor shall ensure work is carried out in a safe manner and shall be responsible for ensuring
conformance with H. & S.E. guidelines and conform to requirements of C.O.S.H.E. regulations.
2 Equipment
2.1 General
2.1.1 Equipment shall be as described in the illustrated schedule attached. The contractor shall obtain all
equipment as specified from the indicated manufacturer. The contractor shall ascertain lead times from
suppliers for equipment as specified and shall ensure all orders are placed in time to allow for any delays in
supply that may occur.
2.1.2 The contractor shall be responsible for any direct or consequential costs of delays in sourcing of equipment. The contractor shall inform the construction manager immediately if there is likely to be any late delivery of equipment that may cause any delay to the contract.
2.1.3 The contractor shall ensure that equipment as supplied conforms to relevant British Standards, requirements of licensing authorities and can be installed in accordance with B.S. 7671:2001 and any other relevant
standards, legislation and approval . All fittings shall be C.E. Marked and Certificates of Conformity shall be
provided.
2.2 Light Fittings
2.2.1The fittings shall be as defined in the attached schedule.
2.2.2 The contractor shall provide a working sample of each light fitting type for final approval prior to
placing an order. Fittings shall be functionally checked for operation throughout the entire control range.
Each sample shall be tested locally by the Lighting Control System Supplier to ensure correct operation
with the Lighting Control System. Each sample shall be tagged and signed by the Lighting consultant, architect and project manager on acceptance and retained safely stored on site as a control sample until the
completion and hand over of the project. Any fittings subsequently supplied that are judged by the design
team not to match the approved control sample for quality of construction, operation or finish shall be
rejected.
2.2.3 Fittings shall be installed according to the manufacturers instructions supplied and in accordance with
details and instructions in the drawings and specifications, relevant codes of practice and legislation in force
at the time of installation.
2.2.4 Fittings shall be handled with care to protect their finishes. The contractor shall be responsible for
safe storage of fittings prior to erection and shall replace any fitting or part thereof damaged in handling or
installation.
2.2.5 The contractor shall ensure that fittings and lamps are protected from contamination by dust, fumes,
moisture or any other hazard common to building sites. Should contamination occur, fittings shall be cleaned
carefully in accordance with manufacturers instructions. Care must be taken not to damage reflectors and
lenses during cleaning, as this seriously degrades the performance of the fitting.
2.2.6 The contractor shall ensure that forming openings, installation of fittings, final finishes etc. are programmed so that none of these operations causes damage to works already complete and that paint plaster etc. cannot contaminate the finishes of fittings.
2.2.7 The contractor shall ensure that any fixings taken are suitable for the intended design load. The contractor shall confirm suitability of locations of fixings and imposed loads with the architect or structural engineer. Fixings for lighting track, suspensions, cantilevers, brackets etc. shall be dead weight tested to 2 times
their maximum rated load prior to erection of track or fittings
2.3 Lamps
2.3.1 Low voltage reflector lamps shall be supplied with a glass front providing protection against non-passive failure of the capsule and to reduce the emission of UV rays to a negligible level. The lamps shall be
precisely as specified in the attached schedules and specification. Please note exact specification of lamp
type and rating to ensure that correct fitting performance is obtained and that the lamp is suitable for the
fitting in which it is installed. Any lamps that do not conform to this specification will be rejected
2.3.2 Low Voltage capsule lamps shall be precisely as specified in the attached schedules and specification
and shall conform to the type specification as indicated with regard to construction, light output and operating life. Any lamps that do not conform to this specification will be rejected.
2.3.3 Mains voltage and discharge lamps shall be precisely as specified in the attached schedules and specification. All lamps shall be rated suitably and intended for use in the UK. Lamps sourced internationally may
be incorrectly rated and will not achieve correct operating life.
2.3.4 Fluorescent lamps are to be precisely as specified in the attached schedules and specification. Where
a manufacturer, colour or tube type are shown in the specification these are to be supplied exactly, substitution is not acceptable without prior written instruction. Any lamps that do not conform to this specification
will be rejected.
2.3.5 Cold Cathode lamps shall be manufactured and installed by an approved supplier. The supplier shall
provide operating samples of tube to determine colour and surface illuminance for approval by the construction manager prior to manufacture.
2.3.6 The contractor shall ensure that all lamps installed at hand over meet the manufacturer’s published
performance criteria for light output, colour rendition and photometric performance. Noticeable variations
in colour output between lamps will not be accepted neither will noticeable variation of light output from
similar lamps.
2.3.7 The contractor shall be responsible for replacement of all lamps judged to have failed prematurely according to the manufacturer’s stated life of that lamp, as timed from date of hand over.
2.4 Control Gear
2.4.1 Control gear including low voltage transformers is to be supplied as indicated in the drawings and
schedules.
2.4.2. Where there is any discrepancy in part number, rating or performance due to manufacturers change
of design, part numbers, advised substitution or error the construction manager and client’s consultant are
to be informed immediately and prior to the contractor placing the order for such equipment.
2.4.3 Where any piece of lighting control gear has a tapping or adjustment for mains input voltage the
contractor is to measure the voltage at the fitting at time of switch on and ensure the connections are
made according to the measured voltage. Where fittings are installed and made operational prior to the full
building load being applied to the substation the contractor shall re-measure and re-tap the control gear as
necessary when the full load has been applied to the substation and subsequent to the final voltage settings
being made at the substation.
3 Focusing and Commissioning
3.1 The client’s lighting consultant will require to supervise focusing of all adjustable light fittings. The contractor will advise the client’s consultant of suitable times The contractor shall allow not less than 21 days,
not necessarily continuous or sequential, attendance in respect of this requirement. It shall be noted that a
considerable amount of time will be required out with normal working hours and at weekends to accommodate focussing and adjustment during hours of darkness and at times when switching lighting on and off
shall not inconvenience or compromise safety of other contractors working on the site. Some final adjustments may be required subsequent to client occupation of the building.
3.2 The contractor shall provide sufficient access and safety equipment for focusing of fittings at high level.
The contractor shall ensure the full, exclusive and unhindered use of any such equipment for the entirety of
any focusing session by the consultant and shall ensure that suitably trained and certificated operatives are
present for the duration of the use of such equipment within their normal allowance of working hours.
3.3 The contractor shall ensure that all fittings to be focused in any session shall be fully working and correctly lamped prior to the commencement of the focusing session.
3.4 The contractor shall supply at least two competent electricians one of which must be the foreman or
charge hand for the installation and fully familiar with the layout of wiring and switching and control system,
as installed , for the period of any focusing or commissioning session.
3.5 The contractor shall make all reasonable facilities available to any supplier of light fittings for inspection,
commissioning, installation or remedial work required on site.
4 Hand Over
4.1 The contractor shall ensure all light fittings, reflectors and lamps have been cleaned and are all operating
correctly in accordance with drawings, focus instructions, site instructions etc.
4.2 The contractor shall hand over to the client any unused or surplus fittings and control gear, in a clean
and reusable condition preferably in their original packing, otherwise adequately packed for storage.

6. ARCHITECTURAL LIGHTING CONTROL
6.1 Kuwait Trade Centre : Lighting Control
Show Descriptions
1 System Description:
The system shall be supplied as defined in the detailed performance specification.
2 Show overview:
2.1 The lighting control system shall allow for programmable and variable lighting effects. This document provides a
description of the initial shows required but shall not be construed as to limit the system capability to providing these
shows only.
2.2 The daily show sequence will commence at a time determined by an astronomical time clock integral with the system,
typically this will be 30 minutes before sunset. Shows will stop at an absolute time determined by the time clock, typically
01.00 hours. Thereafter an overnight static scene will be set that will be switched off at a time relative to sunrise, typically
30 minutes after sunrise. This setting will prevent operation of heat sensitive lighting components throughout the daylight
hours.
2.3 Event shows shall be required to be initiated by time clock and calendar and by manual operation. These will similarly
be limited to operating in the hours of darkness only. These shows will be variable year on year by selection of preprogrammed shows or by providing new programmes as and when required.
3 Daily Show:
3.1 The daily show will be initiated by time clock events and will consist of a sunset show, an evening show an overnight
scene and a sunrise show.
3.2 The sunset show will typically consist of a white scene that fades up over 5 minutes at a given time then a subsequent
fade of 20 minutes to a blue scene including set up of interior night scenes and water feature effects chases
3.3 The evening show shall consist of between 25 and 50 scenes that consecutively change colour floor by floor. These
scenes shall be selected according to inputs from a roof mounted ultrasonic anemometer to indicate, by the number of
floors in each colour the measured wind speed. The system shall be programmed with at least four alternate patterns that
may be selected manually or by wind direction information from the anemometer.
3.4 Typically the anemometer shall provide an RS232 output as an ASCII string that shall include comma separated
variables including the wind speed and the wind direction. Wind speed data will be used to select specific scenes, wind
direction data may be used to determine the groups of scenes selected by the wind speed data.
3.5 Typically the scenes shall have a fade time of 3 to 5 seconds and a wait time of 5 to 10 seconds, these values will
be finally determined during set up of the system. Scene selection shall be initiated by the last data received from the
anemometer at the completion of the previous scene wait time.
3.6 Response to wind speed shall be non linear. Typically from 0m/s to 12m/s scenes are selected each 1m/s change in
wind speed. Thereafter scenes shall be selected at 14m/s, 16m/s, 18m/s, 20m/s, 23m/s, 26m/s, 30m/s, 34m/s, 38m/s, 44m/s,
50m/s 58m/s, >66m/s . These values are based on average ground level data and shall be able to be reset as required
based on actual performance of the anemometer on the building. Further information as to actual wind speeds shall be
available in the course of construction. Final settings shall be determined during on site set up.
3.7 The overnight scene shall consist of all floors in a single colour. This scene shall be selected at a determined time that
may be altered as required. At sunrise the show shall be the exact inverse of the sunset show.
4 Event Shows:
4.1 Event shows shall include sequences of colour change on tower and atrium lighting elements. These shall be
sequences of 100 cues that loop and repeat or may alternitavely be similarly sized chase sequences. Chase patterns be
established with the possibility of varying colours in the cue sequence on the fly using a separate sequence to determine
order and change of the colours. Speed and timing of sequences shall be variable. It shall be possible to use input from the
anemometer to determine speed and colour selection in the sequences from either wind speed or direction information.
4.2 Event shows shall typically replace the daily shows on given calendar days and by manual selection either on the day
the effect is required or to interrupt and replace the daily show running.
5 Housekeeping Shows:
5.1 Housekeeping scenes and shows shall be provided for fault finding. These scenes shall be manually selected and
password protected.
5.1 All Red, All Green and All Blue scenes shall be required. A red green blue chase of 1 second fade and 3 second with
per scene shall be required. An All On scene shall be required.
5.2 Test scenes or other outputs shall be required to confirm the anemometer is functioning and is being correctly
interpreted by the system for wind speed and direction.
6 Programming:
6.1 The system supplier shall provide all system elements and shall confirm compatibility and operation by off site tests
and mock ups prior to shipping equipment to site
6.2 The system supplier shall work with the Lighting designer to prepare agreed formats for “story boards” covering daily
shows and initial event shows. These shows shall be off-site programmed as will initial settings for other presets, effects
and scenes as required.
6.3 On site programming will include initial system set up and testing, loading and testing of off-site programming. The
programmer shall work with the lighting designer to fine tune shows to the satisfaction of the client’s representative.
