Licensed and Ready!
CLA has received its license to open the new Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center,
Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA and the Stewart and Lynda Resnick Neuropsychiatric
Hospital at UCLA. The license was issued following an in-depth inspection by the state
Department of Public Health. “We will begin our move sequence of departments from the old
UCLA Medical Center to the new hospital beginning June 16, culminating with the patient move
day on June 29. Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center will officially open on June 29,” says Dr.
James Atkinson, senior executive for transition.
On June 30, staff should start parking in their new assigned lots. If you have parking
questions, please see your parking coordinator.
“Congratulations to all of you who have worked so hard to get us to this point. We truly have
something to celebrate,” says Dr. David Feinberg, CEO of UCLA Hospital System.

Offered in Primary Care Setting
The UCLA Department of Family
Medicine and the Les Kelley Family
Health Center offer a program
utilizing FDA-approved medication
to treat dependence on opioids,
including certain painkillers or
heroin, in the privacy of the doctor’s
office, under the supervision of
UCLA physicians with expertise in
treatment of addiction. It is the only
local addiction medicine program
offered in a primary care setting.

As one of the staff nurses on the Medical
Observation Unit (MOU), what do your job
duties entail?
I take care of patients who need
continuous cardiac monitoring. Our
primary population includes patients
who have had heart transplants,
cardiac bypass surgeries, valve
replacements or a myriad of other
thoracic or cardiothoracic procedures.
During my hourly rounding, I
monitor and assess the condition of
the patients to make sure they are
comfortable, receive their medications
and are responding appropriately to
their treatment. I also try to anticipate
each patient’s needs. I keep the
staffed by many very experienced
nurses treating a wide range of
patients. I knew this would be the
best place for me to gain experience
and learn from the best.
I enjoy making a positive
difference in the lives of our patients.
Each day my goal is to make our
patients better and to teach them the
tools to become advocates for their
own care. I familiarize our patients
with what to expect—according to
their illness and condition—during
the course of their hospitalization.
This encourages the patients to trust
more and take a proactive role in
their care. Fostering this type of

contact, have witnessed a
noticeable improvement
in both employee and
patient satisfaction levels.

It begins with U.
doctors informed of their patients’
progress and if any complications
arise, I let their physicians know and
act accordingly.
Did you know at an early age that you
wanted a career in nursing?
No. In fact, during college I tried a
variety of occupations including movie
theater projectionist, pledge drive
operator for public television and
office assistant in a law firm. But, I
especially enjoyed my science classes
and I knew I wanted a career helping
people. It seemed nursing would
satisfy both of those conditions.
Now that you’re an experienced nurse, is
the career what you expected?
Nursing is very rewarding; yet, it’s
different from what I anticipated
when I was studying. In nursing
school, we learned how to help
patients become physically well, but
it wasn’t until I was actually nursing
that I learned the more difficult and
equally important part of the job:
How to develop a relationship with
each patient and his or her family, to
think of the patient as a total being
and not a diagnosis.
What do you enjoy most about your position?
Years ago when I was a float-care
partner, I noticed that the MOU was
patient partnership is very
rewarding.
How have the RBC and C-ICARE programs
made a difference?
There’s a definite improvement in
morale among the employees. RBC
affects the way we speak and interact
with patients and how employees
speak and interact with each other.
We look at what’s important to the
patients and show that we’re
searching to fulfill their needs and
expectations. We look at how to
build stronger and more productive
bonds with our coworkers. What can
we do to make everyone happy?
Even something as simple as making
sure that everyone takes a break
goes a long way in boosting spirits.
C-ICARE has given us the tools to
communicate in a meaningful and
respectful manner to our patients
and they are appreciative. Patients
have commented that people seem
so much nicer and happier. These
programs are working.
How do you like to spend your time away
from UCLA?
Right now I’m busy planning my
September wedding. But when I do
have spare time, I enjoy spending it
with my family. Connecting with
people is really important to me.
