The class will cover important concepts in weighing and sampling theory and practice. Attendees will become familiar with proper methods to evaluate, configure, manage, and optimize coal weighing and sampling systems at mines, shipping terminals, and power plants. The course will introduce today’s best practices for coal weighing and sampling. Attendees will be introduced to the fundamentals of NIST weighing practices (Handbook 44) and ASTM sampling practices and methods, including costs associated with coal measurement errors, the various types of equipment for weighing and sampling from moving coal streams, important key indicators for coal weighing and sampling operations, calculation of sample system mass extraction rates, and bias testing. This course is intended for

Administrators who want to get the most out of their systems

Engineers considering upgrades to existing systems

 Coal yard personnel who are operating belt lines with sample systems

 Central office support engineers

Plant maintenance personnel

Government regulators

Fuel procurement and contract administrators

Financial auditors and strategic managers in the delivery chain

Anyone who handles coal quality data (ash, sulfur, heating value) should be familiar with how the data is generated. Coal weighing and sampling must be carried out in a defined manner for best analysis results. Proper weighing on a moving conveyor belt requires a stable platform, accurate electronic calibrations, and periodic testing and maintenance to insure accurate weights. Sampling takes into account the coal top size, flow rate, variability of coal parameters, sample preparation, and correct laboratory procedures to suit the needs of the user of the data.

The course is timely because of the future need for increased monitoring and reporting of coal quality, to meet commercial demands for coal contracts, efficiency and environmental reporting, and staffing changes due to retirements and promotions. The course will allow new hires to get up to speed quickly. The course is based on all the applicable standards in NIST Handbook 44 and ASTM volume 05.06, which are widely accepted in industry as the best way to get a representative sample.

The NW&SA is an independent non-profit organization serving individuals, companies and other organizations involved with industrial applications of bulk material weighing & sampling. Our objectives are to actively promote and recognize professional knowledge in weighing and sampling disciplines, accuracy in weighing and sampling equipment along with its proper selection, installation, operation and maintenance, proper policies for the administration of weighing and sampling programs, uniform, accurate, and equitable laws, rules and regulations for bulk material weighing and sampling, continuing education in the weighing and sampling disciplines, and advancement in the state-of-the-art for weighing and sampling.
