NEWS of NOTE December, 2015 Carmen, A Chapter of The Guilds of Segerstrom Center for the Arts Message from your EDITOR Dear Carmen Roses: The years come, the years go by. Belonging to this Chapter of The Guilds has been a wonderful experience for me. Having retired from a stressful career (true for many of us), belonging to this group of strong women has been rewarding and fun. We are one of the smallest chapters in The Guilds, and yet we produce the most leaders not only within our chapter, but in The Guilds. So many of us have stepped up to the plate (Sally Kennedy’s motto) to serve Carmen, chair a Guild sub-committee, the Spring Celebration and sit on the Executive Committee. Let me list our current members who have filled these positions. For Carmen: Eileen Cirillo, Michela Engle, Pat Faust, Loretta Freund, Terry Hagan, Diana Hardy, Fran Hill, Johnnie Houser, Carol Hunter, Susan Kinkade, Joan Lutz, Margaret Nolde, Jackie Olstad, Elisa Sands, Carol Strauss, and Melody Waterman. For The Guilds: Eileen Cirillo, Michela Engle, Loretta Freund, Diana Hardy, Carol Hunter, and Susan Kinkade. This list is extraordinarily impressive and the Carmen Roses should be very proud! My husband and I will be moving to Santa Fe after January, date unknown at this time. Carmen Chapter needs someone to “step up” and volunteer to take over my job as Editor of the newsletter and Circuit Representative. These duties give you the added responsibility of being on the Carmen Board of Directors. It is a fun job and you can make the newsletter your own! —Carol Hunter News from Michela: Wow, it is that wonderful holiday season again! Where is the year going? We will be dining at Gulliver’s once again on December 2. And, ABSOLUTELY YES, we will have the Surf City Singers caroling for us. Start practicing your holiday songs! We also plan to have the fun gift exchange. Don’t spend more than $15-20 on the gift and get ready to ‘steal’ from your friends. And we will have a raffle too, adding to our Carmen fundraising budget for this year. Good News! Chico’s is doing their fashion shows with 10% of sales donation again! Hooray! We are going to go back to Chico’s Corona del Mar for our Annual Fashion Show. Let me know if you want to be a model! Thank you for all the cards that you have sent me. Loved them all. I'm getting better everyday and have graduated from walking with a walker to a cane! Yeah! I'm getting stronger, but still a bit tired. I can’t wait to see each of you! Fondly, Dr. Robert Istad has confirmed that he will speak at our January meeting. Dr. Istad is currently an Associate Professor and Director of Choral Studies at Cal State Fullerton, artistic director of the Long Beach Camerata Singers and will take on the same role for the Orange County Pacific Chorale when current artistic director John Alexander retires in 2017. So get your thinking caps on and give Diana Hardy some input as to what you would like Dr. Istad to speak about. She went to see Cirque du Soleil Kurios with her daughter-in law and granddaughter in Costa Mesa. It was great! If you haven’t seen it yet, you should go. Then the next night she went to see Lion King with other Carmen members. That was wonderful. Last week-end she went with her grandkids and daughter inlaw to see the Tree lighting ceremony at Fashion Island. Always so much fun!!! This Week-end they all are going to see Beauty and the Beast in Los Angeles. She will be having family and friends over for Thanksgiving. Then she leaving for Las Vegas for 4 days for some R & R. Whew, she will need it!! Susan and David Kinkade: They will be driving to Colorado Springs, Colorado to spend Thanksgiving with their grandson, 2nd Lt. Trevor Kinkade, who will arrive back from Kuwait next week. They are hoping for good weather for travel both to and from there, so Susan can be back in time for our Christmas Luncheon on December 2nd. Alex: Braver Players teen troupe presents Les Miserables School Edition at the Freed Theater on the campus of Christ Cathedral in Garden Grove. Dec. 4-6. Tickets available online at www.braverplayers.org. Derek and Diana Hardy: They have just returned from Charleston, SC where they caught up with family and Diana was able to catch up with some very dear friends. It was a jam-packed weekend with a tour of the Boeing plant, an opportunity to see the new Dreamliner up close. For those of you who do air travel, the Dreamliner will be part of your future at some point if you haven't already flown in it! Joan Lutz: She alternately working on settling the estate of my brother-in-law (and learning a lot!) and visiting Michela during her exile at home following knee replacement and repair surgery. On the estate side, here is an important tip - NEVER EVER have two co-trustees (just pick one) and update your estate plan every 5-10 years. Carol Hunter: She leaves next Wednesday for Florida to visit with her Dad. She and Phil plus her sister had a wonderful 5 days in NYC. Carol was tour guide for her sister seeing the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Central Park, The Highline, walked the Brooklyn Bridge and the 911 Memorial...Whew! They also had a great visit from Phil’s daughter Becca! And yes, Carol has begun the unloading and prepacking required for a big lifetime move! Carol Strauss: I just returned from Orlando where I attended the national high school journalism convention Nov. 11-14. I am always a head judge for one of the write-off contests, and the mentors, one of which I am, attend at least one of the two every year. There were a little over 6300 high school journalism students there from all over the country and it's always great to see all the good things they are doing. REQUEST FROM TERRY HAGAN: Terry needs donation of items for the monthly raffles. If you have something to donate or ideas for her, please call her at 714-401-9698.
