Standard 1d: Students know mitochondria liberate energy for the work that cells do and that
chloroplasts capture sunlight energy for photosynthesis.
What this means: Mitochondria release energy from sugar to power the life processes of
the cell. Chloroplasts use sunlight energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into
glucose and oxygen.
Word/Concept
Definition or example
photosynthesis
the process by which plants use sunlight,
carbon dioxide, and water to make
glucose (a type of sugar) and oxygen
cellular
respiration
the process that happens in the
mitochondria of both plant and animal
cells; mitochondria use oxygen to break
apart glucose molecules to release stored
energy (molecules of ATP)
chloroplast
the green organelle found in plant cells
where photosynthesis happens;
chloroplasts are like “sugar factories”
mitochondrion
the complex organelle found in both plant
and animal cells where the process of
cellular respiration happens; mitochondria
use oxygen and glucose to release energy
(ATP)
chlorophyll
the green pigment found in chloroplasts;
chlorophyll absorbs sunlight energy to
power the process of photosynthesis
consumer/
heterotroph
organisms like people and other animals
that can not make their own food, they
must eat other organisms to obtain energy
(pictures and/or diagrams)
Word/Concept
Definition or example
producer/
autotroph
organisms like plants that can make their
own food through photosynthesis to obtain
energy
raw materials/
reactants
the materials or substances that are used
during a chemical reaction--the
substances present at the beginning that
will be changed during the reaction
(photosynthesis and cellular respiration
are chemical reactions)
products
the materials or substances that are
produced or “made” during a chemical
reaction--the new substances that result
from the chemical reaction
oxygen
a gas; O2 or oxygen is a product of
photosynthesis and a raw material or
reactant for cellular respiration
carbon dioxide
a gas; CO2 or carbon dioxide is a reactant
or raw material for photosynthesis and a
product of cellular respiration
glucose
a type of simple sugar molecule; glucose
or C6H12O6 is a product of photosynthesis
and a reactant or raw material in cellular
respiration
ATP
Adenosine Triphosphate; a complex
molecule used for energy in cells; the
main product of the process of cellular
respiration
water
a very important molecule; H2O or water is
a raw material or reactant in
photosynthesis and a product of cellular
respiration
process
A series of actions, changes, or functions
bringing about a result: like the process of
digestion, or the process of
photosynthesis or the process of cellular
respiration
(pictures and/or diagrams)
