PeCOD Conclusions and Advantages
PeCOD rapid analysis will provide soap and detergent manufacturers with a fast and accurate
indication of the organic content in their waste.
Samples containing approximately 3% surfactants in water with extremely high COD were analyzed.
With a large initial dilution of the sample with water (1000x), they were easily introduced to the PeCOD
without any foaming issues.
PeCOD results correlated extremely well with dichromate results, with small discrepancies due only to
sampling differences.
Optimal results for PeCOD analysis will be achieved using a 1000-fold dilution and analyzing in the red
or yellow electrolyte range.
PeCOD is a green technology that allows soap and detergent manufacturers to market this as an
improvement over an older, toxic test and will provide valuable information on the biological footprint of
fire suppressants. It also promotes green initiatives within the company.
Background
The PeCOD is a new technology that allows for fast, green and accurate determination of COD.
PeCOD is designed to test various waste samples from manufacturing and municipal sources to
determine COD load.
Three different samples were received from a soap and detergent manufacturer. These samples were
analyzed by both the dichromate and PeCOD COD Methods by MANTECH INC.
PeCOD Testing
Sample 1 was a liquid sample, however very foamy in nature. Samples 2 and 3 were extremely
viscous, the consistency of liquid hand soap.
All samples were diluted 1000-fold, sample 1 by volume and samples 2 and 3 by weight. The samples
were then allowed to settle. Sampling for both the dichromate and PeCOD tests occurred from the
same diluted sample container.

The first sample is composed of diethylene glycol monobutyl ether, which is very soluble in water. A good correlation
is observed for both COD measurement techniques.

The second sample contains diethylene glycol monobutyl ether, ethylene glycol and lauryl alcohol. While both glycols
are soluble in water, lauryl alcohol is not. It is however soluble in ethylene glycol. An excellent correlation is observed
between PeCOD and dichromate.
The third sample contains lauryl alcohol and propylene glycol. A good correlation is observed for both COD
measurement techniques, with differences likely due to sampling errors caused by the insolubility of lauryl alcohol in
water.
In an attempt to remove some error due to sample matrix difficulties, a 1:1 mixture of sample 1 and 3 was analyzed,
as the glycol from sample 1 should help dissolve some of the lauryl alcohol in sample 3. A good correlation was
observed between PeCOD and dichromate.
Summary of PeCOD Benefits
PeCOD is a Safe and Green Technology. PeCOD analysis is conducted with a non-hazardous electrolyte
while the dichromate COD test requires harmful chemicals including potassium dichromate, mercuric
sulfate and sulfuric acid. PeCOD promotes safe and healthy working environments and contributes to
green initiatives.
The MANTECH PeCOD analyzer is accurate and precise. It generates results within +/-10% of the
theoretical COD value. Accredited bodies such as Standard Methods state that the dichromate COD
method yields results within +/- 20% of the theoretical value.
Immediate savings can be realized as the average PeCOD sample costs approximately $1.00. This
includes the cost of blanks, calibrants and sensors, with no disposal costs required. Vials purchased for
dichromate testing have an average cost of $1.25 each, plus disposal costs associated with hazardous
waste. Total estimate cost for the dichromate test is $3.00 per sample.
PeCOD provides a real time analysis of COD in approximately 6-15 minutes. This real time quick analysis
aides in the regulation of product losses, waste stream COD loads and treatment plant optimization in order
to troubleshoot problems while reacting quickly and precisely to changes in the system.
The MANTECH PeCOD is a rugged, durable instrument generating accurate and
precise results that stand the test of time.
